The week of preparations in Sunagakure had passed like a sigh.
As the designated leader for this mission, Daigo walked calmly knowing that with his companions, nothing would happen on the way.
To his right was Pakura; to his left, Sasori though he was inside his puppet Hiruko, something normal for him when going on missions.
The Kazekage had insisted on adding a few more ninjas to help, but Daigo told him it would be fine thanks to there being more people at the eastern camp who would join him.
The journey to the Eastern Camp which would normally take a full day for a standard team was devoured in just a few hours. The speed and endurance of the three shinobi were at a superior level.
Upon arriving, the coast hadn't changed much since the last time Daigo had been there but the atmosphere was different.
Where with Todo it had seemed like a vacation spot before, now it had a more military feel than before.
The ninjas on guard tensed up when they saw three figures appear on the horizon. However, upon recognizing Daigo and Pakura, they lowered their weapons with a mix of relief and astonishment.
They were escorted directly to the central command tent the strategic heart of the front. As the heavy tent flap was pulled back, Daigo paused for a moment blinking to adjust his eyes to the dim light from oil lamps.
"Well… what kind of welcome is this, Todo-sensei, Dad?" Daigo said with a smile upon seeing the scene.
Inside, the scene was almost surreal. Todo the camp leader was sitting around a low table covered in stained maps, but instead of reports, he held a jug of sake. Beside him, Haru Daigo's father laughed while drinking from his own cup of sake.
"My brother!" Todo roared jumping up and dragging Daigo toward an empty seat. "You arrived just in time! Sit down let's enjoy this family reunion!"
"My son!" Haru visibly affected by the alcohol but with his characteristic strength wrapped Daigo in a hug that nearly knocked the air out of him.
"Come here! Let your father see you you've grown! But you're missing something, you need a little sake in your veins."
"Dad I'm not a kid anymore. Let me go you stink," Daigo protested though deep down he felt a warmth only family could provide.
After a few minutes of chaos and forced laughter to ease the tension of months of war, the atmosphere finally cooled.
Daigo noticed that despite the apparent drunkenness the eyes of his father and Todo were sharp. It was the defense mechanism of those who live on the edge of death: drink to forget the fear, but be ready to slit an enemy's throat in a blink.
Todo set the sake jug down and tapped the map with his index finger.
"Brother you've finally joined the dance," Todo said his voice now serious. "Things have stayed calm. Neither side has attacked since the last time though there have been skirmishes."
Daigo studied the map. The enemy camp was strategically placed near the Land of Water, where reinforcements could arrive faster and supplies could pass more easily.
"So what have you two been doing during this time?" Daigo asked looking at both who only whistled and looked in different directions.
"Daigo I think that doesn't matter. What they did, we should focus on our mission" Pakura said knowing these two drunks had probably just calmed the war and started drinking to pass the time.
"Exactly as always, very smart, Pakura," both said in unison.
"Alright good. Todo, Dad our mission is to form an assault team and start attacking Kirigakure until they completely retreat from the east," Daigo explained.
"I thought it would be something like that. I imagine you already have the team in mind who would they be?" Haru asked.
"The assault team consists of me, Pakura-chan, Shizuka, Baki and finally you, Dad if you want to come," Daigo said.
Todo raised an eyebrow. "And Sasori? And me?"
Daigo glanced at Sasori. There was a silent exchange of looks an understanding only the two of them shared.
"Sasori has an independent mission the Kazekage gave him," Daigo explained briefly. "And you, Todo-sensei you stay here to maintain the defense. If we fail, you're the one who informs."
Todo let out a dry laugh nodding with respect. "As you say, brother. But if you die, I'll go to hell just to kick your ass though instead of taking Haru, you'd better take Yashamaru. He's a medical ninja and very expert at what you're going to do he'll help much more than Haru."
"I think the same go get Yashamaru. We'll take care of everything here," Haru reaffirmed with a big smile.
Listening to them both talk only made Pakura and Daigo think of a word that described them both:
"Drunks"
With everything informed, Daigo and Pakura went to find the others, not taking long to gather them and explain the mission.
Everyone accepted, knowing how important the mission was, then continued talking and passing the time.
Before the assault team departed at dusk, Sasori approached Daigo outside the tent.
Pakura watched them from a distance arms crossed. Her eyes were fixed on both, how those two seemed to be moving toward something she didn't know making her curious about what they were plotting.
"Everything is ready," Sasori whispered making sure no one could hear.
"Perfect good luck and make sure everything goes perfectly," Daigo replied. "Leave no trace. If this works out, Suna won't be in such a bad position anymore."
Sasori nodded and without a word of goodbye, disappeared into the sand like a mirage.
Pakura approached Daigo her expression full of suspicion and curiosity.
"What are you two up to?" she asked.
"Not much nothing important, Pakura-chan," Daigo said smiling at her
"I know you're lying to me, Daigo. I'll just say this: be careful with what you do," Pakura said looking seriously at Daigo whose smile became a little more serious.
"Don't worry so much, I've got everything under control. Let's go find the others we're leaving now."
And so they left the camp advancing under the cover of night. Thanks to Daigo's seismic sense, they didn't need to be so vigilant about ground traps.
As they approached the Kirigakure camp, the fog became so dense that everyone was on maximum alert in case a surprise attack happened.
"It's a massive supply center," Baki whispered crouched behind a mountain.
Daigo activated his perception to the maximum. Not only were there ninjas he felt the circulation of artificial water under the ground.
"That's how this continuous mist works," Daigo analyzed. "It's smart. On these coasts, there's already natural mist with this they can make it so thick that people get lost if not for my seismic sense."
"Yashamaru, Shizuka it's your turn," Daigo whispered. "You need to eliminate a total of 10 ninjas who are on guard duty. They're all in the watch posts so they'll be easy to distinguish."
Yashamaru taking the necessary information
nodded with a focused look on his mission.
At first Daigo wasn't sure about bringing Yashamaru on the mission but after talking to him and learning more about his skills, Daigo knew there was no one more perfect than him.
And seeing Yashamaru now that was exactly what they needed. With silent steps of a ninja trained for ANBU and a weapon like threads, the guards on watch didn't have a chance.
A strong thread around the neck and it was their death. He continued with the others letting no one alive.
On the other side, Shizuka activated her Whisper Release. And began the elimination. It was already difficult to detect Yashamaru's chakra threads but Shizuka's wind cuts were impossible to detect unless you were a sensor or had good senses.
Little by little, both began moving until they eliminated all the guards now having the camp at their disposal to attack.
Daigo nodded seeing the quick work of the two, preparing for the next phase. He looked at Baki who was beside him with his katana and saw he was ready.
"Perimeter cleared," Shizuka's voice came as a whisper beside Daigo who nodded.
Daigo made a hand signal. It was time to change the weather.
"Pakura your turn," he ordered.
Pakura stepped forward and the temperature around began to rise. The temperature changed drastically in a second. Her eyes shone with the intensity of heat making her brown eyes seem to glow.
She raised both hands and a giant sphere like a sun rose above the camp.
The Kirigakure ninjas who were resting began to wake up slowly the most sensitive felt the change opening their eyes to see a strong light striking them thru the door.
"The sun came out so strong today," one of the ninjas wondered wiping his face with his hand.
Many more thought the same though for Pakura all this thought never reach her. She was only focused on her jutsu the sun that remained in the air.
Seeing that most of the heavy mist had started to disappear Pakura nodded and formed another hand seal and the Shakuton ball exploded.
Though normally the Shakuton ball would have created a heat wave this was different. The explosion made thousands of smaller balls start falling over the camp.
A true meteor shower.
"Shakuton: Kyodai Ensaunai (Scorch Release: Great Scorching Meteor Rain)," Pakura whispered coldly.
The rain of heat balls began impacting throughout the camp waking up all the ninjas who were still asleep alerting them to the strong explosions falling everywhere.
"Enemy attack! It's a Shakuton technique!" shouted a Kiri ninja who managed to get out of one of the tents his skin reddened from the heat.
"Too late," Baki muttered charging forward with his sword piercing the ninja who had warned of the attack his wind chakra around the blade of his katana making his previously terrifying weapon now even worse.
Daigo didn't activate his crystal. He knew he should save his trump card in case a big fish appeared and besides, he wanted to have fun and use what he felt most comfortable with.
"Earth Release: Earth Spears," Daigo struck the ground with the palm of his hand.
The terrain beneath the feet of the ninjas coming out to defend fractured. Dozens of sharpened stone spears erupted irregularly piercing anything in the middle.
Daigo moved among them like a tank. His taijutsu had improved even more despite not having trained as much as before now hitting with much more force.
A couple o Mist chūnin tried to attack him from the flank with a sword but Daigo simply spin dodging the blade by millimeters and connected a chakra-infused punch directly to the man's ribs.
The sound of breaking bone was dry. Continue with the fight Daigo swept another opponent's feet and finished him with a palm strike that sank him several centimeters into the ground blood splattering across the floor.
More ninja continued to come, but Daigo's taijutsu quickly overwhelmed them, while the more difficult ones Daigo finished off with an earth jutsu, trapping them and then finishing them off.
Baki beside him was a whirlwind of efficiency. His wind katana cut down anyone who got in the way with quick movements passing near a ninja simple cuts taking limbs.
Not letting the ninjas regroup Baki eliminated a squad trying to form a defense line with water jutsu.
Chaos was total. Yashamaru and Shizuka stayed in the rear ensuring no one escaped to call for reinforcements. With Yashamaru and his threads all the paths were filled with web-like traps.
Daigo stopped in the middle of the camp surrounded by fallen enemies. The mist had almost disappeared leaving only shreds of vapor rising toward the sky.
He looked toward the main supply tent where he felt a much stronger chakra signature than the rest.
"Baki, Pakura-chan someone interesting is coming," Daigo warned assuming a combat stance.
From inside the main tent, a cold and heavy chakra pressure began to emanate. The remaining water seemed to obey the figure flowing toward it.
"Well…" a rough and arrogant voice came from the shadows. "Looks like Suna's puppies have learned to bite. I must admit burning our mist was a clever move if we were in your desert. But here, water is everywhere."
A tall man with the Kirigakure headband and a bandaged sword on his back stepped into the light. His presence made even Pakura narrow her eyes in caution.
"One of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist?" Baki asked putting himself even more on guard.
Daigo observed the man. His orange hair, shark-like teeth, and fish-like appearance a name came to mind.
"Fuguki Suikazan one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. I didn't expect to find any here," Daigo said now more serious knowing this opponent wouldn't be easy.
"Huh looks like you know who I am. Doesn't matter I'll kill you all before I leave," Fuguki said grabbing the bandaged sword from his back.
Daigo seeing the bandaged sword nodded knowing what made Fuguki the most dangerous: Samehada.
"Daig —do you know anything about this guy?" Baki asked beside Daigo.
"Yes don't attack him with chakra and don't let him hit you with that sword," Daigo said activating the First Breath of the Seven Heavens.
Pakura from farther back seeing the opponent understood why Daigo had gotten serious knowing the fame of this Mist swordsman.
"Daigo I'll take care of the remaining ninjas and evaporate as much water as possible. That's what I can help with without interrupting your fight," Pakura said from behind Daigo.
"Perfect thank you, Pakura. Baki let's go. If he hits you once retreat and leave him to me. If anything else happens don't hesitate to flee."
With Pakura moving away and Daigo and Baki ready Fuguki didn't take long to charge attacking with Samehada making both dodge the strong blow.
Daigo didn't wait long charging forward. His powerful fists went toward Fuguki who blocked with his sword to cover himself. Baki also attacked from the back seeing a clean attack but it was blocked by the man's long hair who turn like steel
"Not bad, brats though you'll need more than that," he said launching a blow at Daigo who blocked but was pushed back. Baki on his part dodged some senbon made from the hair that almost caught him.
"Looks like I need to get more serious if I want to survive."
