The warm afternoon breeze was beginning to yield to Sunagakure's evening chill, yet the corridors of the central hospital were still humming with the constant hustle of medical staff. Chakra lamps illuminated the white stone walls with a dim glow as Daigo strode toward the intensive care rooms.
Inside the pouch under his Kazekage cloak rested 8 of the original 11 special scrolls. Each represented not just a compendium of advanced techniques and theories, but the promise of a future for those who had fallen in the preliminaries and those advancing to the finals of the Chūnin Exams.
Daigo paused before a room housing a member of the Museifu clan. Opening the wooden door, the dense scent of antiseptic and medicinal salves filled the air.
Resting on the bed was Shima Museifu. Heavy bandages wrapped the young ninja from torso to neck, with healing seals applied directly to his skin to mend the devastating internal damage caused by Naruto's Rasengan.
Despite his condition, Shima was awake, staring at the ceiling with heavy eyes. Noticing the village leader enter, he reflexively tried to sit up, only for a sharp pang of pain to stifle a groan.
"Don't move, Shima," Daigo intervened in a deep yet calm voice, approaching the bedside with measured steps. "Honestly, I'm surprised you survived an impact of that magnitude at point-blank range. Though, looking closely, that's precisely what I expected from someone bearing the blood of the Museifu clan."
Shima's eyes widened, looking at his leader with a mix of shock and reverence.
"Lord... Kazekage..." Shima rasped, his voice raspy and strained. "What brings... you here?"
"I came to see you personally," Daigo replied, pulling up a chair beside the bed. "I wanted to ensure the medics were giving you proper care and see how your recovery is progressing."
Shima nodded slowly, relaxing his shoulders against the pillow. "The medics have been excellent... They say the recovery seals are working quickly. I'll be out of this bed in a couple of weeks."
This prompted Daigo to reflect on the concept he had shared with Karin regarding Yang-chakra seals, which could facilitate gradual healing without draining the medical staff's stamina.
Daigo studied the young man's face in silence for a few moments. Then, looking toward the window as the last rays of sunlight filtered through, he spoke again.
"You know, Shima? Back when I was just a genin in training, my teammate was the direct heiress of your clan: Shizuka Museifu."
Shima blinked in surprise. Shizuka's name was a legendary, almost sacred figure among the surviving families of their lineage.
"At first," Daigo continued with a faint smile of nostalgia, "I must admit we didn't get along. We were hot-headed, stubborn, and clashed over almost everything. Yet, over time and through missions, we became very close friends. One day, during a break in the desert, she shared her greatest dream: to restore the Museifu name, making the clan renowned and respected across all the Great Nations once more."
Daigo shifted his gaze back to the boy on the bed.
"You and your kin are living proof that her blood still runs strong," the Kazekage said. "However, one part of the promise I made to Shizuka before she passed remains unfulfilled: ensuring the Museifu clan reaches the peak of its true potential."
Reaching into his vest, Daigo pulled out one of the scrolls and set it carefully on the nightstand beside Shima's medication.
"That is why I bring you this scroll," Daigo explained. "It contains detailed notes on advanced chakra control and methods to fortify your body's endurance. It will help you reach that goal and allow me to settle part of my debt to Shizuka."
Shima stared at the scroll, profound emotion gleaming in his eyes. He tightened his fists against the sheets and nodded firmly.
"I understand... Thank you endlessly, Lord Kazekage. I promise I won't waste this opportunity."
"Don't thank me," Daigo concluded, standing up and settling his robes. "I expect great things from you, Shima. Do not disappoint Shizuka, who is watching over you from the other side."
Without waiting for a response, the Kazekage interlocked his fingers in a hand seal. In a flash of light and displaced air, his figure vanished entirely from the room.
SHIN!
The air rematerialized on the outskirts of the village, right before the imposing entrance of the Dokuhebi clan compound. The architecture was defined by dark stone walls surrounded by resilient desert flora and shallow trenches designed as habitats for reptilian creatures.
The moment Daigo stepped toward the main gate, a clan guard emerged from the shadows. Beside him, resting on its hind legs with a low hiss, stood a massive Komodo dragon with green scales, spanning over two meters in length.
Recognizing the Kazekage, the guard immediately placed a hand over his chest and bowed deeply. The reptile beside him lowered its head in an instinctive display of submission before the village leader's massive chakra.
"Lord Kazekage," the guard greeted with absolute respect. "Welcome to the Dokuhebi grounds. How may we serve you?"
"I came to speak with your clan leader," Daigo replied with a polite nod. "I have a private matter to discuss with him and his son."
"Right this way, please."
The guard led Daigo through the cobblestone corridors of the compound to the main audience hall, where banners bearing the dragon emblem adorned the walls.
In the center of the room, seated on a meditation cushion, the patriarch of the Dokuhebi clan looked up. Surprised by the unexpected arrival, he stood up at once and offered a respectful bow.
"Lord Daigo, it is an honor to welcome you to our home," said the clan head. "To what do we owe your personal visit at this hour?"
"Greetings," Daigo replied calmly. "I have come to see your son, Asper. I wish to grant him something important following his performance in the preliminaries."
The patriarch nodded with understanding and quiet pride. "Asper is in the rear training grounds. He hasn't stopped practicing since returning from the arena. Feel free to head straight back."
Daigo offered his thanks and passed through the rear doors into a wide training yard of packed earth and sheared rock.
In the center of the yard, Asper Dokuhebi was executing a series of tactical combinations in sync with his partner, a Komodo dragon with dark scales and claws sharp as daggers. The boy delivered swift strikes with a short blade while the beast swept its massive tail across the ground to off-balance imaginary targets.
Sensing someone entering their training area, both Asper and the dragon halted. The creature let out a soft hiss, stepping in front of the youth until Asper patted its back to calm it.
Recognizing Daigo, Asper sheathed his weapon instantly and bowed low.
"Lord Kazekage! Forgive me if I'm interrupting your time... Do you need something from me?"
Daigo walked into the center of the field, taking in the young man's firm stance and the impressive presence of the reptile beside him. Reaching into his robes, he brought out the second scroll of the day and held it out to Asper.
The boy took it with both hands, looking at the bamboo cylinder with clear curiosity.
"I observed your fight against the young Uzumaki from Konoha carefully," Daigo began, crossing his arms over his chest. "Although the outcome was not in your favor, I saw the tremendous potential you possess as a shinobi and the unique bond you share with your partner."
Asper lowered his gaze slightly, gripping the scroll. "I was unable to overcome brute strength..."
"The problem wasn't strength, Asper," Daigo corrected in an analytical tone. "Your current limit lies in the rigid structure of how you coordinate attacks with your dragon. You have a partner who fights beside you like a constant summon, but if one lags behind in strength, that gap becomes the single weak point in your formation."
Asper listened intently, nodding in silence as he processed the Kazekage's feedback.
"In that scroll," Daigo continued, "I have outlined tactical combination methods to refine your coordination, alongside exercises to increase both of your capabilities. Remember, when both you and your dragon are formidable, your opponent faces two distinct threats, not just one."
Asper looked at the manuscript in his hands and then at his Komodo dragon, whose yellow eyes seemed equally attentive. A renewed sense of resolve lit up the young Dokuhebi's face.
"I will study every word in this scroll, Lord Kazekage," Asper declared firmly. "I promise to surprise you with the results."
"I look forward to it," Daigo smiled, giving a slight nod before taking a step back. "Keep up the training."
With a subtle movement of his hands, the Kazekage vanished once more in a flash of light, leaving behind a faint trail of chakra in the evening air.
Daigo's next stop brought him to the northern sector of the village territory, a secluded district where the architecture shifted dramatically. Upon crossing the protective barrier of the Yuki clan compound, the ambient temperature dropped instantly.
The Yuki clan complex was a dome of glass and white stone, designed to maintain a perpetual cold climate that allowed members to practice their Ice Release (Hyōton) without the desert heat impairing their performance.
Stepping onto the ground covered by a thin layer of frost, Daigo was met by two guards clad in light blue-and-white robes. Seeing the Kazekage, both ninjas bowed with reverence.
"Lord Kazekage, welcome to the Yuki clan," one guard greeted.
"Greetings," Daigo replied, adjusting his cloak slightly against the cold draft running down the corridor. "I wish to see your clan leader and Haku."
"Of course. The patriarch is in the central hall, and Haku is in practice field three."
The guards led him through the icy corridor to a spacious room where the Yuki clan leader greeted him with a warm smile and a deep bow.
"Lord Daigo, it is always an honor to host you in our dome," the Yuki leader stated. "I presume you are here to review the outcome of the preliminaries?"
"Straight to the point," Daigo agreed smoothly. "I want to see Haku to check on his condition after his fight against Gaara."
"He's in training field three," the patriarch indicated, gesturing for a servant to accompany the Kazekage. "He's been there ever since the medics cleared him."
Daigo walked down the glass hallway into a vast training chamber where the temperature hovered below freezing. In the center of the field, surrounded by dense ice pillars and crystalline mirrors reflecting the light of the dome, stood Haku Yuki.
The youth was executing fluid, graceful movements, channeling his ice chakra to shape frozen surfaces with precision.
Daigo paused at the edge of the ring, watching the routine for a moment before calling out clearly.
"Not bad, Haku. Your chakra flow looks steady for someone who collapsed from exhaustion just hours ago."
Haku stopped instantly. Turning to see Daigo, the youth dissipated the ice around him and immediately dropped to one knee, bowing his head in respect.
"Lord Kazekage..."
Daigo let out an amused sigh and shook his head gently as he walked over.
"Stand up, Haku. I've told you many times that when it's just the two of us, there's no need for such formality. In many ways, you are my student."
Haku rose slowly, though he kept his gaze respectfully low. "Even so, you are the leader of our village and my master. I owe you proper respect."
Daigo smiled warmly at the young Yuki's earnest nature. Reaching into his vest, he withdrew the third scroll of the day and offered it to Haku, who received it with both hands after a slight bow.
"There is your next phase of training," Daigo told him. "I've detailed several concepts to expand the versatility of your Hyōton, focusing on ways to counter opponents who hold an elemental advantage over you, such as Earth or Fire."
Haku held the bamboo cylinder to his chest, valuing the guidance set down by the Kazekage's own hand.
"Furthermore," Daigo added gently, "I don't want you feeling down about your loss to Gaara in the preliminaries."
Haku pressed his lips together, revealing a sliver of inner frustration. "I know Gaara is far stronger than I am. Even though I found a way to fight and counter his sand using crystal, I ultimately couldn't bridge the gap."
"Gaara is no ordinary opponent, Haku," Daigo reassured him, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I've trained him personally since he was a young child. I know the full extent of his capabilities better than anyone. Forcing him to his limits and compelling him to use his Shōton proves how far you've come. Practice what's written in that scroll; I expect truly great things from you in the future."
Haku's eyes gleamed with gratitude, and he bowed firmly.
"I won't disappoint you, Daigo-sensei. I will work twice as hard starting today."
"That's the spirit," Daigo smiled, giving his shoulder a couple of reassuring pats before turning around. "I'll see you soon."
With the day's three scrolls successfully delivered, Daigo departed the Yuki clan dome and headed back toward Sunagakure's upper residential district. As he walked beneath the blanket of stars settling over the night sky, the noise of the village faded into a comfortable quiet.
Reaching the front door of his home, Daigo paused for a moment before turning the handle. From inside, the sounds of laughter, plates clattering onto the table, and the lively voices of his family were clear.
"I'm telling you, my Scorch Release technique was way cleaner than your sword slash, Daiku!" Sunae's voice echoed loudly from the kitchen.
"You're exaggerating as usual, Sunae," Daiku's calm voice countered from the dining room. "Your technique is fine, but it's purely close-quarters. With my katana, I wouldn't even let you get close."
"Ha! What did you say?! Come over here and say that to my face!"
"You two, that is enough arguing at the table!" Pakura's commanding voice cut through the feud, followed by the firm thump of a wooden spoon hitting the counter. "If you don't sit down and wash your hands right now, neither of you gets dinner. Your father should be home any minute."
Daigo couldn't help but smile warmly. The weight of his office, the political decisions, and the shadows of the preliminary rounds seemed to melt away before the warmth of his home.
Turning the knob, he opened the door, stepping inside the house illuminated by the golden glow of chakra lamps.
"I'm home," Daigo announced softly, closing the door behind him.
