The group exchanged glances, gripping their weapons tightly. The voice that had spoken seemed to echo from everywhere and nowhere at once. It felt weird, like it was part of the castle itself. "Let's finish this," Alice said, her voice steady despite the exhaustion creeping into her bones.
They stepped through the massive gates, and immediately the temperature dropped. The scorching desert heat vanished, replaced by a cool, almost eerie breeze that sent chills down their spines. The inside of the castle was dark, lit only by torches that flickered along the sandstone walls. The flames cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to move on their own.
"This place gives me the creeps," David whispered, his Desert Eagle drawn and ready.
"Stay close," Miriam said, her spear glowing faintly with blue flames. "We don't know what's waiting for us, so let's keep an eye out."
They moved deeper into the castle, their footsteps echoing in the silence. The corridor seemed endless, stretching on and on. Every now and then, they'd pass by ancient carvings on the wallsimages of warriors fighting, falling, dying. Images of cards. Spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs. And in the center of each carving, a figure sitting on a throne.
"These carvings... they're telling a story," Alice said, stopping to examine one more closely.
"A story of what?" CJ asked.
"I don't know," Alice said. "But it doesn't look like a happy ending."
Ace scoffed. "When does anything in this game have a happy ending?"
They continued forward until they reached a massive chamber. The ceiling was so high it disappeared into darkness. In the center of the room stood a single figure, bathed in shadow. As they approached, the torches around the room flared to life, revealing the figure fully.
It was a woman.
She stood tall, maybe 6 feet, dressed in flowing robes made of what looked like sand itself. Her skin was a deep bronze, and her eyes glowed a golden yellow, like the desert sun. In her hand, she held a long staff, topped with a glowing crystal shaped like a spade. Her presence was overwhelming, not in a terrifying way like the black knight, but in a way that commanded respect. Power radiated from her like heat from a flame.
"Welcome, travelers," she said, her voice smooth and calm. "I am Sahira, Guardian of the Desert, the 5 of Spades."
Alice stepped forward, gripping her sword. "We're here to beat you and move on to the next level."
Sahira smiled, but it wasn't cruel. It was almost... sad. "Of course you are. That is the nature of this game. You fight, you survive, you move forward. But tell me, do you even know why you fight?"
"To get home," Miriam said firmly. "To survive."
"To survive," Sahira repeated, as if tasting the word. "Yes, survival. The most human of instincts. But what happens when survival is no longer enough? What happens when you realize that this game is not just about fighting monsters, but about fighting yourselves?"
"What are you talking about?" CJ asked, his aura hands ready.
Sahira raised her staff, and the ground beneath them began to shift. The sandstone floor transformed into actual sand, soft and unstable. The group stumbled, struggling to keep their balance.
"I am not like the mindless creatures you have faced before," Sahira said. "I do not attack without reason. I do not kill without purpose. I test. And if you wish to proceed, you must pass my test."
"What test?" Alice demanded.
Sahira pointed her staff at each of them, one by one. "Each of you carries a burden. A fear. A regret. A weakness. My test is simpleface it, or fall to it."
Before anyone could respond, the sand beneath them erupted, swallowing them whole. Alice felt herself falling, tumbling through darkness, until she landed hard on solid ground.
She opened her eyes and gasped.
She was no longer in the castle.
She was standing in her bedroom. Her real bedroom. The one from before the game. The walls were the same pale blue she had painted them years ago. Th posters of her favorite bands still hung on the walls. Her bed was unmade, just like she had left it. Everything was exactly as it had been the day she found the box of cards.
"What... what is this?" Alice whispered, her voice trembling.
"This is your test, Alice Hammington."
Alice spun around. Sahira stood in the doorway, watching her with those glowing golden eyes.
"This isn't real," Alice said. "This this is a trick."
"Is it?" Sahira asked. "Or is the game the trick? Tell me, Alice, what do you fear most?"
Alice's heart pounded. "I don't..."
"You fear that you will never leave," Sahira said softly. "You fear that this game will consume you, that you will die here, forgotten, lost in a world that was never meant to be yours. You fear that everything you are fighting for is meaningless."
Alice gritted her teeth. "That's not true."
"Isn't it?" Sahira stepped closer. "You have fought so hard, led your team, pushed them forward. But deep down, you wonder what if it's all for nothing? What if there is no escape? What if the only way out is death? After all, you haven't even reached half of the entire game."
Alice felt tears stinging her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. "I... I don't know. But I have to keep going. I have to believe there's a way out. Because if I don't... then what's the point?"
Sahira studied her for a long moment, then nodded. "That is your answer. And it is enough."
The bedroom dissolved, and Alice found herself back in the chamber, gasping for air. The others were there too, all of them looking shaken, as if they had experienced something similar.
"What... what just happened?" David asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"You faced yourselves," Sahira said. "And you survived. That is more than most can say."
She raised her staff, and the sand beneath them solidified back into stone. "You have passed my test. You may proceed."
"Wait," Alice said. "That's it? No fight?"
Sahira smiled again, that same sad smile. "Not all battles are fought with swords and spears, Alice. Some battles are fought within. And those are the hardest of all."
She tapped her staff on the ground, and a portal opened behind her, glowing with white light. "Go. Level 6 awaits. But remember this the higher you climb, the harder the fall. And not all of you will make it to the end. Because from here onwards, the game is gonna become even more hard."
The group stood in silence for a moment, processing everything that had just happened. Then, one by one, they walked toward the portal.
Alice was the last to go. She looked back at Sahira one more time. "Will we see you again?"
Sahira's smile faded. "Perhaps. Or perhaps I will see you when you fall."
Alice turned and stepped into the light. But Alice was thinking, nothing about what happened made any sense, but she had a feeling she was about to find out.
" My queen" Sahira called. " Yes" responded a figure sitting on a throne. " I tested the minds of the players, they seem determined to win this game... Maybe .. just maybe... Win everything" said Sahira with a shaking voice. " No one has ever won the entire game , many have fallen before, they will fall as well." Responded the figure.
