Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: A Promise in the Heat

Morning came with a lazy kind of warmth, sunlight slipping through the curtains and painting soft gold across the room. Yumi lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling, her heart already racing—as if it remembered him before her mind fully woke up.

Pherrie.

She sat up, hugging her knees, replaying every word from last night. The way he'd leaned close. The way he'd said you're mine so easily, so confidently. It should've scared her.

Instead, it made her feel chosen.

A knock came at the door.

Her heart jumped.

When she opened it, Pherrie stood there, hair slightly messy, that familiar teasing smile already in place. "Good morning, Princess," he said smoothly. "Did you sleep… or did you dream about me?"

Yumi groaned softly. "You're unbelievable."

He laughed, clearly pleased. "Yet you're smiling."

She was—and she hadn't even noticed.

They walked together toward the beach, the sand still cool beneath their feet, the ocean stretching endlessly before them. The holiday air felt different here—lighter, freer, but charged with something unspoken.

Pherrie stopped suddenly, turning to face her. "Hey," he said, tone softer than usual. "About everything that's been happening… are you okay?"

That caught her off guard.

"I am," she said honestly. "More than okay. Just… confused sometimes."

He nodded, then stepped closer, close enough that she could feel his warmth, his presence grounding her. "You don't have to figure everything out at once," he murmured. "Just don't push your feelings away because they scare you."

Her throat tightened. "And what about yours?"

A slow smile curved his lips. "Oh, mine?" He leaned in just a little, teasing, eyes dark and playful. "I stopped pretending a while ago."

Her breath hitched.

From behind them, laughter echoed. Kai stood a short distance away, sunglasses perched on her head, watching them with a knowing look. "Wow," she said, amused. "You two are really in your own world."

Pherrie didn't move away. "You jealous?" he asked lightly.

Kai scoffed, but her smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "Maybe a little. Hard not to be."

Before the tension could thicken, Damian's voice cut through the air. "Yumi."

She stiffened instinctively.

Damian stood near the rocks, hands clenched, eyes unreadable. "I just want to talk," he said. "No tricks."

Yumi hesitated—but this time, Pherrie didn't step in front of her. He only leaned down and whispered, low and steady, "Whatever you choose… I trust you."

That meant more than any possessive words ever could.

Yumi took a breath and shook her head. "There's nothing left to say, Damian."

The finality in her voice surprised even herself.

Damian's shoulders fell slightly. Without another word, he turned and walked away.

When Yumi turned back, Pherrie was watching her—not teasing now, not smirking. Just looking at her like she mattered.

"You're stronger than you think," he said quietly.

She smiled, heart full, warmth blooming in her chest. "And you're trouble."

He grinned instantly. "The best kind."

As the waves crashed softly behind them, Pherrie reached for her hand, lacing his fingers with hers. This time, Yumi didn't hesitate. She squeezed back, sealing something unspoken between them.

It wasn't love yet.

But it was a promise—

and it burned warmly, steadily, in the summer heat.
