Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: A Breezy Afternoon

The resort was quiet in the early afternoon, the kind of stillness that made every sound—birds chirping, leaves rustling, the distant waves—feel alive. Yumi strolled along the garden paths, her eyes catching the sunlight glinting off petals and the soft shimmer of the fountains.

"Princess, walking alone again?" Pherrie's teasing voice called out, and Yumi turned to see him leaning against a tree, arms crossed, smirking.

"I'm not alone!" she replied, cheeks warming. "I'm just… enjoying the view."

"Oh, sure," he said, stepping closer, brushing lightly against her shoulder as he passed. "And thinking about me while you do it, right?"

Yumi groaned. "You're impossible!"

Pherrie laughed softly, his eyes sparkling. "And yet, you keep letting me tease you. That must mean something."

She tried to ignore the flutter in her chest, though her fingers twitched slightly where his hand brushed hers. "Maybe it doesn't," she murmured.

He smirked. "We'll see."

They wandered toward a small, open meadow at the edge of the resort, the grass waving gently in the breeze. Pherrie spotted a fallen branch and picked it up like a sword. "Princess, I challenge you to a duel—flower edition!"

Yumi laughed, grabbing a flower from the meadow. "A duel? You're on!"

For the next hour, they ran and dodged through the meadow, pretending the flowers were swords, laughing whenever one of them stumbled or got distracted by a butterfly or a small critter. Their playful energy was contagious, light, and completely safe.

Even when Kai and Damian appeared at the edge of the meadow, curious about their antics, Pherrie stayed subtly close to Yumi, teasing her and guiding her, keeping the game fun and friendly.

By the time they stopped, both of them were flushed from running, arms full of wildflowers, and laughing so hard their cheeks hurt.

"See?" Pherrie said, holding up the last flower with a triumphant grin. "Teamwork—and a little mischief—wins the day."

Yumi smiled, nudging him gently. "We really do make a good team."

He smirked, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. "The best team, Princess. And I'm not letting anyone take my partner away."

Hand in hand, they walked back toward the resort, the wind carrying their laughter, the sunlight warming their backs, and the joy of another safe, teasing, and lighthearted summer afternoon lingering in the air.
