prologue

Flames & promise

The house trembled as flames hungrily devoured its walls, smoke curling thick into the night sky. The crackling of burning wood echoed through the empty streets, mingling with the distant cries of startled neighbors. Every window glowed like molten gold, and shadows danced wildly across the charred floors.

In the midst of chaos, a young couple clung to each other, their breaths ragged and hearts pounding as if each beat might shatter the fragile barrier between them and the inferno.

"I won't let go," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the roar of the fire. His hands gripped hers so tightly that she could feel the tension in his bones.

"You promise?" she asked, her eyes wide with fear, yet shining with determination. The smoke stung her eyes, but she refused to blink.

"I promise," he replied firmly, cupping her face gently despite the heat licking at their skin. "No matter what happens, we'll stay together. Always."

The floor beneath them groaned and cracked, sending sparks into the air, but they didn't release each other's hands. The heat pressed close, suffocating, yet in that instant, it was nothing compared to the burning intensity in their hearts.

Memories of stolen moments and whispered confessions flitted through their minds, mingling with the fear of the present. They had loved long before this night, and now, facing death together, that love seemed fiercer than ever.

"I can't… I can't breathe," she gasped, coughing, her eyes tearing up as ash rained down around them.

"Just a little longer. Hold on," he urged, his forehead pressed against hers, his arms a shield against the raging fire. "We'll make it. We have to."

Even as the walls began to collapse, the ceiling threatening to cave in, their fingers intertwined like chains of fate. Sparks clung to their hair, igniting momentary flames that they brushed away frantically. And yet, the vow remained: a bond unbroken, a love defiant against the merciless flames.

Through the smoke, through the chaos, through the screaming and the fire, one thought consumed them both: they would survive, together. And if fate decreed otherwise, then in every lifetime to come, they would find each other again.

Even as the world around them fell apart, their vow remained unbroken—a love destined to echo through the ages.
