Chapter 188 - Chapter 188: Wetland Gym

The Wetland Gym was exactly as the name suggested—a humid, echoing arena that felt more like an indoor swamp than a standard battlefield. Standing at the entrance, Julian adjusted his collar. The air was thick enough to drink, a stark contrast to the crisp, dry cold he'd left behind in the north.

"Hello there. You must be the challenger who called in yesterday?"

A young apprentice, dressed in a light blue tracksuit, looked up from his clipboard. Julian nodded, pulling out his Pokédex and the digital appointment card he'd received via the official league app.

"Julian. Sandgem Town. I'm here to see if the 'Great Mask' is as tough as the rumors say," Julian said, offering a small, confident grin.

The apprentice scanned the ID, his eyes widening slightly when he saw Julian's record. "Everything checks out. You're all set. The Gym Leader is already waiting on the central platform. Good luck—you're going to need it in there."

Julian stepped through the heavy double doors and down a long, dimly lit tunnel. When he emerged, the scale of the arena hit him. It was a massive, sunken basin filled with dark, churning water. White floating islets, looking like oversized lily pads or chunks of bleached coral, were scattered across the surface, providing the only stable footing for any non-aquatic Pokémon.

At the far end of the pool, a man stood as still as a statue. He wore a heavy white cloak that billowed in the draft of the gym's ventilation system, and a blue, wrestling-style mask that looked both ridiculous and intimidating. This was Crasher Wake—known here as Yoshinori.

"Hahahaha!"

The man's laughter boomed, echoing off the high ceilings before Julian had even reached the challenger's platform. Yoshinori opened his eyes, his gaze sharp through the slits of his mask. "You finally made it, Julian! I was beginning to think you'd gotten stuck in the mud out in the Great Marsh. The anticipation was starting to make me drowsy!"

"Sorry to keep you waiting," Julian replied, tilting the brim of his hat. "I had to make sure my partner was... properly motivated for a swim."

"No apologies needed!" Yoshinori shouted, throwing his arms wide. "Those six Gym Leaders I talk to haven't stopped singing your praises. They say you're a tactician like no other. I've been itching to see if you can actually swim with the big fish or if you're just a guppy in a fancy hat!"

"I don't plan on being anyone's dinner today," Julian said. "I'm here for the Fen Badge. Let's make it a match worth remembering."

The referee stepped onto a raised pedestal between the two platforms, flags in hand. "This is an official match between Gym Leader Yoshinori and the challenger Julian from Sandgem Town! The rules are three-on-three. The battle ends when all Pokémon on one side are unable to continue. Only the challenger is permitted to make substitutions! Trainers, bring out your first Pokémon!"

"Listen well, boy!" Yoshinori roared. He grabbed the edges of his white cloak and ripped it away in one violent motion, revealing a massive, muscled torso and blue wrestling tights. "I am the Master of the Marsh! My Pokémon are forged in the crushing pressure of the deep! We will absorb every hit you throw and come back like a tidal wave! Witness the true power of water!"

He launched a Poké Ball with a powerful overhand throw. "Go! Gyarados! Rule the waves!"

With a flash of light, a massive, serpentine blue dragon erupted from the water. Its three blue horns caught the gym light, and its gaping mouth let out a roar that vibrated through the floorboards. This wasn't just any Gyarados; it was a veteran, its scales scarred and toughened by countless battles.

Julian didn't flinch. He reached for the Poké Ball at his belt. "As we agreed on the ship, Growlithe... it's time to show them that fire doesn't always go out when it gets wet. Let's go!"

He tossed the ball, and Growlithe materialized on one of the larger floating islands.

"Roar!" "Woof-woof-hail!"

The moment they locked eyes, both Pokémon unleashed a simultaneous Intimidate. The air pressure in the arena seemed to drop as the two predatory roars collided. It was a stalemate of wills; neither backed down, proving that despite the species disadvantage, Growlithe's spirit was every bit as fierce as the sea serpent's.

However, once the posturing was over, Growlithe looked down at the dark water lapping at his island and then up at the towering Gyarados. He gave his tail a dissatisfied flick. Woof-woof... (Julian, seriously? You're making me fight this giant skyscraper on a piece of floating plastic? This is an OSHA violation.)

"Stop complaining," Julian muttered under his breath. "You've trained for this. You're faster, smaller, and a much harder target."

Yoshinori crossed his arms, looking genuinely intrigued. "Ho? A Fire-type in my swamp? And a Growlithe at that? You either have a brilliant plan or you've finally lost your mind, Julian. Do you really think that little spark can survive in the middle of a deluge?"

Julian wagged a finger playfully. "A magician never reveals his secrets, Yoshinori. But let's just say we've done our homework on 'species disadvantages.'"

"Brave words! Let's see if they hold water!" Yoshinori pointed forward. "Gyarados, let's start with a taste of the sea! Use Brine!"

Gyarados lunged forward, his massive jaws unhinging as he spat a high-pressure stream of salt-heavy water. It wasn't just a Water Gun; it was a concentrated, stinging jet designed to capitalize on every weakness.

"Leap to the next island and prepare the Firefly stance!" Julian commanded.

Growlithe didn't hesitate. He propelled himself forward with his powerful hind legs, his body blurring as he vaulted over the water. The Brine slammed into his previous islet, the salt water splashing harmlessly into the dark pool.

"Nice try, Gym Leader!" Julian shouted over the sound of the splashing water. "But you're going to have to do better than that. This Growlithe might be the most evasive Pokémon I've ever trained."

And he wasn't exaggerating. Ever since a certain "incident" back in Solaceon Town involving a very persistent Julian and a lot of surprise 'hugging' attempts, Growlithe's reaction time had become superhuman. Julian had turned his own "plushie obsession" into a training tool. He had spent weeks trying to sneak up on Growlithe during naps, during meals, and even in the middle of other training sessions.

Growlithe: (╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻ Do you have any idea what I've been through? This human has no boundaries! I've learned to sense a 'petting attempt' from three rooms away. If I can dodge Julian's needy hugs while I'm eating a steak, dodging a giant dragon's spit is nothing!

"Interesting speed," Yoshinori noted, his grin widening behind the mask. "But can you dodge a storm? Gyarados, don't let up! Continuous Brine! Flood the islands!"

"Roar!"

Gyarados didn't just fire one shot. He began a rapid-fire barrage, sweeping the water stream across the floating stones like a machine gun. The impact of the salt water against the islets sent huge plumes of mist and spray into the air, obscuring the battlefield.

Growlithe was a streak of orange and black, zig-zagging between the islands. He wasn't just running; he was calculating his trajectory in mid-air, using the damp surfaces of the islands to slide and pivot with impossible agility. Every time a jet of water looked like it would pin him down, he'd find a tiny gap in the spray and slip through it like a ghost.

"He's fast, I'll give you that!" Yoshinori shouted through the mist. "But eventually, the water gets everyone! He's going to run out of islands, Julian!"

The salt water continued to crash against the stones, the sounds of the impacts echoing like thunderclaps in the humid gym. To any observer, it looked like Growlithe was being cornered, his safe zones slowly being doused in the oppressive weight of the Gyarados's power. But Julian stayed calm, his eyes tracking the orange blur moving through the white spray. He knew that in a swamp, the winner isn't the one who hits the hardest—it's the one who stays on their feet the longest.
