Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — Secrets on the Edge

The night air bit at Ariana's cheeks as she packed her small leather satchel in the quiet of her room. Every movement was deliberate, practiced, careful. She had spent weeks preparing for this moment—leaving Blackthorn Academy before anyone could discover the truth she carried, the secret that could upend worlds: her twins.

Her hands trembled slightly as she folded clothes, hiding the growing curve of her abdomen beneath layers. Every item placed in her bag was more than a necessity; it was a lifeline, a step toward survival.

Somewhere deep in her chest, a spark of fear thrummed. Leaving meant freedom, but it also meant exposure. She had to trust no one—not even the friends she had allowed close, and certainly not Jayden Cole, whose presence had become an inescapable storm in her life.

Ethan appeared in the doorway, hesitant, eyes wide. "Ariana…? Why are you packing now?"

She froze, her pulse spiking. "I… I have to leave. Just for a while," she murmured, forcing a calm she didn't feel.

He stepped closer, concern etched on his features. "You're hiding something. I can feel it. You've been different—distant, distracted, tense. Is it… Jayden?"

Ariana's heart skipped a beat. How much could she tell him? How much could she reveal without risking everything?

"It's… complicated," she said softly, lowering her gaze. "I have to do this for… reasons you wouldn't understand."

Ethan's brow furrowed. "You can trust me, Ariana. I won't betray you."

A part of her wanted to believe him. A part of her wanted a friend to lean on. But the pull of Jayden, the golden storm of him, tugged at her heart relentlessly.

From the shadows of the hallway, Jayden watched. His golden eyes glimmered in the dim light, a predator stalking prey, yet controlled, precise, and terrifyingly beautiful. He had followed her—not out of casual curiosity, but because he could sense something in her that was no longer hers alone.

"Packing to leave me?" His voice was low, velvet-dark, dripping with possessiveness and something primal.

Ariana stiffened. She turned to face him, hands pressed to her abdomen reflexively. "I have to," she said, though every word felt like a betrayal.

"No," he whispered, stepping closer. His presence filled the room, suffocating yet intoxicating. "You're not leaving me. Not without me knowing why."

Her pulse hammered. She had been careful, cautious, and yet here he was, golden eyes burning through every secret, every lie.

"It's safer this way," she said, forcing steel into her voice. "For everyone."

Jayden's jaw tightened, the predator in him restless. "Safer? For whom? You're hiding from me—or protecting something. Tell me, Ariana. I deserve to know."

Ariana clenched her fists, hiding the secret life growing inside her. She could not tell him—not now, not ever. The twins' lives depended on her silence. "I can't," she whispered.

Jayden's eyes darkened, pupils wide, almost feral. Desire, jealousy, and frustration twisted together in a storm. "You think I won't find out?" he said quietly. "You think anything can hide from me?"

Ethan, watching from the doorway, sensed the tension, the danger, but did not fully understand. His concern for Ariana collided with his confusion and his own growing feelings. He took a cautious step forward. "Jayden… maybe—maybe you should give her some space."

Jayden's gaze snapped to him, cold and lethal, and the air seemed to shift, charged with supernatural intensity. "Step back," he warned, voice low, deadly. "She is mine."

Ariana's heart raced, torn between the two men—the safety, kindness, and normalcy of Ethan, and the fiery, magnetic danger of Jayden. Her instincts screamed that her choice had consequences far beyond the academy walls.

That night, alone in her room after everyone else had gone to bed, Ariana pressed her hands to her abdomen, feeling the faint stirrings of life within her. Her twins were growing, thriving, and her resolve hardened. No one—not Jayden, not anyone—could endanger them. She would protect them, even if it meant walking away from everything she had ever known.

The prophecy whispered again in her dreams, more urgent than ever:

"Children born of blood and ink will awaken powers unseen. Protect them, guardian of the flame, for their enemies are closer than shadows, and their blood will shape the fate of night and darkness."

A shiver ran through her, the weight of responsibility settling like a stone in her chest. Danger was near. She could feel it. Someone—or something—was already watching, waiting for a mistake.

Jayden, relentless and obsessive, would not let her go quietly. Ethan, loyal and kind, might be her only anchor to the world she had once known. And the twins, fragile yet strong, carried a destiny that would ignite a war she could not yet comprehend.

The crossroads had come. Choices had to be made. Secrets had to be kept. And the fire between her and Jayden—possessive, consuming, and inevitable—burned hotter than ever, threatening to engulf them all.

Ariana knew one thing with absolute certainty: the night of fire had only begun. And when the shadows moved, nothing would be the same again.
