Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

Betrayal Unveiled

POV: Xae Rin / Cheng Dynasty

The throne room was thick with tension. Ministers whispered in hushed tones, faces pale with fear and confusion. Xae Rin, newly crowned under the shadow of Nae Yi, sat stiffly on the throne. His hands trembled ever so slightly — a subtle betrayal of the storm inside him.

He had carried the secret for too long. The blood of his brother, the Emperor's death, and the chaos that had consumed the palace weighed upon him like chains of iron.

The courtiers had begun to notice inconsistencies. Eyewitnesses spoke of assassins, of secret orders, and of the deadly precision with which the palace had been attacked. Rumors reached Xae Rin's ears — he could no longer hide behind Nae Yi's influence.

He rose, voice quivering but gaining strength. "People of Cheng! I have a confession to make."

Whispers erupted into shocked gasps. Xae Rin's hands gripped the throne as he continued. "I… I secretly ordered the elimination of my own brother, Xiao Xing. I… I was misled, I was manipulated…" His voice cracked, tears welling in his eyes. "By Nae Yi. I… I sought power, and in doing so… I betrayed my family and my people."

The court fell into stunned silence. Then, chaos erupted. Ministers shouted accusations, guards argued over loyalty, and factions formed in an instant. Cheng, already scarred by rebellion, now teetered on the edge of civil war.

POV: Nae Yi / Cheng Dynasty

From her hidden tower, Nae Yi smiled thinly as she watched Xae Rin confess. Chaos was the perfect cover for her influence. She had planted the seeds of ambition, doubt, and fear in Xae Rin's mind — and now they had blossomed into a bitter harvest.

Let them fight amongst themselves, she whispered. The empire will fracture, and only those loyal to me will endure. Soon, my influence will grow unchecked.

She sent spies to every district, every border, and every strategic outpost, ensuring her network was ready for the coming war. The pieces were in motion — the perfect storm.

POV: Xiao Xing / Borderlands

Xiao Xing, reeling from grief and rage, had retreated with Giyeok to the northern borderlands, where Cheng met Li Dynasty. They arrived to find the first signs of an impending invasion — scouts reporting Li Dynasty's troops gathering, siege engines being prepared, and whispers of war floating on the wind.

"We cannot remain in the palace," Xiao Xing said, his voice low but firm. "Li Dynasty will strike while Cheng is divided. We must protect the people, even if it means leaving our home vulnerable."

Giyeok, still weakened from her injuries, nodded. "…Then we fight together. Always."

The pair moved swiftly, rallying loyal soldiers, training villagers in basic defense, and fortifying the borderlands. Every breath, every heartbeat was a countdown to war.

POV: Ministers / Cheng Court

Inside the capital, ministers argued fiercely. Some blamed Xae Rin, some blamed Nae Yi, and others feared for the future of Cheng. The city was fractured — loyalty to the crown, fear of Nae Yi, and reverence for Xiao Xing collided in a volatile mix.

"We must act decisively," one minister shouted. "If Xae Rin rules under Nae Yi's shadow, the empire will crumble! We need a strong leader!"

"But Xiao Xing is gone," another countered. "The border is vulnerable. If Li Dynasty strikes now, Cheng may fall before we even act."

Arguments turned into threats, and threats into violence. The court was a powder keg, and all that remained was a spark.

POV: Li Dynasty / Invasion Preparations

Across the border, Li Dynasty's generals observed the chaos in Cheng with keen interest. The whispers of rebellion, the division within the court, and the death of the Emperor presented a perfect opportunity.

"Cheng is weakened," one general said. "Their crown prince is unstable, and their people are divided. Now is the time. Strike hard, strike fast, and we take the northern provinces."

The army moved silently, preparing for a devastating campaign. Siege engines, cavalry, and infantry gathered under banners that flapped in the cold wind.

Closing Scene: The Calm Before the Storm

Xiao Xing stood atop a hill overlooking the borderlands, Giyeok at his side. The wind carried the scent of distant fires and the tension of an impending battle. Behind him, soldiers fortified walls, dug trenches, and prepared for the fight of their lives.

"…We are ready," he said quietly, gripping his sword. "No matter what comes, we protect Cheng. We protect each other."

Giyeok's hand found his, steadying him. "…Together," she whispered.

Far away, in the palace, Nae Yi smiled at the rising chaos. Her shadow over Xae Rin had strengthened, her enemies divided, and the war had only just begun.

The stage was set. The empire was fractured. And the storm of blood, loyalty, and vengeance was about to descend upon Cheng.
