Chapter 111 - Poison In The Penthouse

--: Author's POV: --

The penthouse, which had felt like a sanctuary of silk and heavy silence only an hour ago, was now vibrating with a tension so sharp it threatened to shatter the floor-to-ceiling windows. The arrival of Percy and Honey had brought the noise, but the arrival of Angelo and the mysterious Ion had brought a weight—a shift in the atmospheric pressure that suggested the game had changed while Keifer and Jay-Jay were hidden away.

The living area was a sea of faces. Section E had drifted in from the balcony, and the remaining members of the F4 were lounging on the periphery, their eyes darting between the newcomers. But the center of the storm was the fireplace, where Angelo stood with Ion by his side, looking every bit the power couple.

The golden twilight of London was fading into a deep, bruised purple outside, mirroring the darkening mood inside the suite.

--: Jay-Jay's POV: --

My head was spinning. The sudden transition from the quiet intimacy of Keifer's arms to this crowded, high-stakes reunion was giving me literal whiplash. My skin still felt sensitive from the afternoon, and every time I caught the scent of cedarwood on my own clothes, I felt a pang of longing to just go back into that room and lock the door.

But reality was screaming in my face. I looked at Percy, who was still draped dramatically over Honey's shoulder, and then at my brother, Angelo.

"Wait a second," I said, my voice cutting through the murmurs of the room. "I'm beyond confused. Percy... why are you calling Honey 'baby'? And Honey, why are you letting him?" I turned my gaze to my brother, my eyes narrowing. "And Kuya Angelo... aren't you dating Honey? I thought you guys were... you know, a thing."

The room went quiet. Percy stopped his fake sobbing and looked up, a mischievous, cat-like glint in his eyes. Honey looked at the ceiling as if praying for strength.

Kuya Angelo didn't flinch. He adjusted his silver cufflink and stepped forward, his voice calm, cold, and authoritative. "We were never exactly dating, Jay-Jay. It was a strategic understanding. A play for the families to keep certain people quiet." He reached out and took the hand of the woman beside him. "Meet Ion. She is my girlfriend. And your Ate."

Ion stepped forward. She was strikingly beautiful—not just "pretty," but the kind of beauty that felt expensive and dangerous. Her eyes were sharp, and she carried herself with a quiet confidence that made her look older, more experienced—maybe closer to Angelo's age. But as she looked at Keifer, her expression changed. She offered him a small, mysterious smile that made my stomach do a violent, uncomfortable flip.

"You are exactly what I was told you'd be," Ion said to me, her voice like smooth velvet, but she was still smiling at Keifer.

Why is she smiling at my Keifer like that? The thought popped into my head before I could filter it. A sudden, hot prickle of jealousy flared in my chest. Isn't she dating my brother? Why is she looking at my boyfriend with that 'I know you' look? I didn't even realize I was doing it, but I instinctively shifted closer to Keifer, my shoulder brushing his arm in a silent, possessive claim. My lion, I thought stubbornly. Find your own.

Ion's eyes flickered to me, and the corners of her mouth twitched. She didn't miss a beat. "Don't worry, little menace," she said, her voice teasing. "I have my own boyfriend. I won't steal yours... anymore."

Anymore? My brain stalled. What did that mean? Had she tried before?

Before I could demand a translation for that cryptic word, the sharp, rhythmic chime of the penthouse doorbell echoed through the foyer. It wasn't the friendly ring of a guest; it sounded like an alarm.

A man walked in. He was tall, sharp-featured, and carried an aura of arrogance that rivaled Keifer's—but without any of the warmth Keifer usually hid beneath the surface. The moment he stepped onto the marble, I felt Keifer's entire body go rigid.

Keifer stepped fully in front of me, his shadow falling over me like a shield. His voice came out in a low, dangerous snarl.

"What the hell are you doing here, Clyde?"

--: Keifer's POV: --

The day was officially ruined. If the arrival of them was a complication, the man standing in the doorway was a catastrophe. Clyde Watson—my cousin, my rival, and the one person who hated my position as CEO more than any other elder did.

Clyde didn't look intimidated by my tone. He just smirked, his eyes scanning the luxurious room with a greedy, calculating appraisal.

"I'm just visiting my dearest cousin," Clyde drawled, his voice oily and mocking. "Can't a man visit his family without being interrogated?"

"No," I snapped, my hand curling into a fist at my side. "And what the fuck are you doing in London? You're supposed to be managing the Singapore branch."

"Oh, I heard the weather was better here," Clyde said, stepping further into the room. He tucked his hands into his pockets, his gaze landing on the F4 for a split second before shifting back to me. "Actually, I heard your Ex-Fiance was in town, so I came to meet her. And to tell you that from now on, I am working in the London branch. I didn't like the 'vibe' in Singapore anymore."

The air in the room turned to ice. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Jay-Jay stiffen. I felt the blood drain from my face. That term—Ex-Fiance—was a grenade he had just tossed into the middle of the room.

"You can't just decide that," I said, my voice dropping to a lethal volume. "I'm the CEO. You don't make branch transfers without my signature."

Clyde laughed, a cold, harsh sound. "You don't deserve to be the CEO, Keifer. I've worked three times as hard for that chair, and you got it handed to you because of your grandfather. Let's see how much longer you can hold onto it. And I'm not asking, cousin. I'm informing you. I'm staying here."

He didn't wait for my response. His eyes shifted, finding Jay-Jay where she stood partially hidden behind me.

His smirk grew wider, more predatory. He started to walk toward her, ignoring the way I shifted to block his path.

"Oh, I've seen you somewhere," Clyde said, tilting his head as he looked at her. "Wait... aren't you the girl he was dating back then? The one everyone said he only used for revenge? Wait, don't tell me you're still dating him even after he betrayed you like that?"

I stepped into his personal space, my height looming over him. "That is none of your business. Get out of this house. Now."

--: Jay-Jay's POV: --

Ex-Fiance?

The words were like physical blows to my chest. My mind was racing, trying to piece together what this "Clyde" person was talking about. Keifer had told me about what happened back when he left for inheritance, but the way this man said it—like I was a fool for staying—made my blood run cold.

Clyde ignored Keifer's threat. He pulled out his phone, made a quick call, and said, "Yes, bring it in."

Seconds later, a man appeared with several pieces of expensive luggage.

"I'm staying here for a few days," Clyde announced to the room.

"No, you are not," Keifer roared, his voice shaking with pure rage. "You are not staying under this roof. Get the hell out of here before I have security throw you out."

Clyde didn't even flinch. He didn't even blink. "I'm staying for two days. I just want to make a... bonding connection with my future sister-in-law," he said, looking directly at me. "Why do you have a problem with that, Keifer? Besides, my own house isn't finished yet. I'll leave once it's ready."

"You aren't staying," Keifer hissed, his knuckles white. "You don't need to bond with anyone. Get lost."

The tension was reaching a breaking point. I could see the muscles in Keifer's jaw ticking, and I knew that if this continued, there was going to be a fight that none of us could stop. I didn't like Clyde—I hated him the second he opened his mouth—but I knew Keifer was hiding something about this "Ex-Fiance," and Clyde was clearly the one who would let the secrets slip.

I reached out and tugged on the hem of Keifer's shirt, whispering just loud enough for him to hear. "Let him stay, Keifer. It's just two days. Let's not start a fight here in front of everyone. I... I want to know something."

Keifer looked down at me, and for a second, I saw a flash of pure panic in his eyes. He knew exactly what I was going to ask. He knew he couldn't run from the "Ex" conversation any longer if Clyde was in the house.

"But—" Keifer started to protest, his voice strained.

"Let him stay," I interrupted, my voice firm. "It's just two days. If we kick him out, he'll just keep irritating and fighting everyone from the outside. At least here, you can keep an eye on him."

Keifer stared at me for a long time, his chest heaving. He looked at Clyde, who was looking back with a triumphant smirk, and then back at me. Finally, he let out a jagged breath.

"Fine," Keifer spat, turning back to his cousin. "You stay in the room farthest from ours. You don't talk to anyone. You don't look at her. If I even see you in the same hallway as Jay-Jay, I will end you. Do you understand?"

Clyde just smirked, a look of pure, serpentine victory on his face. "Crystal clear, cousin." Then he turned to me and said "Thankyou, beautiful, and we will have a great bond."

"I said leave, before I change my mind. And never ever talk to her" Keifer said angrily, while pointing towards me.

A maid came over, looking terrified, and took his luggage. As Clyde followed her toward the guest wing, he shot one last look over his shoulder at me—a look that told me the next 48 hours were going to be a nightmare.

Keifer didn't look at me. He just stood there, staring at the empty space where Clyde had been, his entire aura radiating a dark, suffocating guilt. The peace was gone. The "Ex" was the shadow over the room, and the serpent was officially in the house.

--: Author's POV: --

The foyer of the penthouse was a battlefield of unsaid words. The arrival of Clyde, the revelation of Ion's identity, and the weight of the "Watson Legacy" had turned the luxurious space into a pressure cooker. Section E stood awkwardly by the stairs, their usual defensive wall around Jay-Jay trembling.

Keifer stood frozen, his hand still crackling with the energy of having just shoved Clyde away. He looked at Jay-Jay, and for the first time, the "Lion" looked like he was staring at a cliff he was about to fall over.

--: Jay-Jay's POV: --

My voice felt like it was coming from underwater. I ignored the chaos of Percy's drama and the sharp, calculating gaze of Ion. I only had eyes for Keifer. The silence between us was so loud it was deafening.

"Keifer," I said, stepping toward him. My legs felt heavy, like I was walking through deep sand. "What was he talking about? Ex-fiance? An engagement?"

Keifer's jaw tightened, a muscle leaping in his cheek. He reached out, his fingers brushing my arm, trying to pull me back into his space, into the safety we had just left behind in the master suite.

"Jay... don't listen to him," Keifer rasped, his voice thick and strained. "Clyde is a snake. He's here to poison everything. I was going to tell you, I swear. It was a business arrangement—a contract forced by the elders and Keigan. It meant nothing."

"It meant nothing?" I whispered, my heart fracturing. "You were engaged to someone, Keifer! While I was waiting? While I was wondering if you'd ever come back? You were standing next to her, wearing a ring that belonged to a Watson legacy?"

"Jay, look at me," he pleaded, his eyes searching mine with a desperate, raw intensity. "I did it for the inheritance. I did it so I could have the power to come back and protect you forever. I had to play their game to win the board. I—"

He stopped abruptly. His hand went to his pocket, where his phone was vibrating with a violent, persistent rhythm. He tried to ignore it, his eyes never leaving mine, but the screen flashed a specific emergency code from the Watson Global headquarters.

"Keifer, answer me," I said, a tear finally escaping and sliding down my cheek. "Did you pick out a ring with Keigan? Did you look at her and think she was the 'proper' choice?"

"I never looked at her!" he shouted, the frustration boiling over. "I only ever saw you! Jay, please, just let me explain—"

Ring. Ring. Ring.

The phone was a screaming intruder. Keifer glanced at the screen, and I saw his face drain of all color. It wasn't just a call; it was a total collapse of the Singapore-London merger documents. Clyde had timed it perfectly.

"I have to take this," Keifer whispered, his voice cracking. "Jay, if I don't answer this, the board will strip my CEO title by midnight. Clyde will take everything. This house, the security, the legacy... I'll lose the power to keep you safe."

"So the company is more important than the truth?" I asked, backing away from him. "Right now? After everything we just... after this afternoon?"

"It's not more important! It's the only way I can protect us!" He looked torn, his body physically leaning toward me while his hand gripped the vibrating phone like a lifeline. "I'll be five minutes. Five minutes, Jay-Jay. Stay here. Don't move. I'll tell you everything, I promise."

He didn't wait for my answer. He turned on his heel, his stride frantic and shadowed, and disappeared into his study. The heavy mahogany door slammed shut with a finality that felt like a slap to my face.

He left me. He chose the chair. He chose the board.

--: Keifer's POV: --

I slammed the study door and punched the 'Accept' button on the phone, my breath coming in jagged, angry gasps.

"What?!" I roared into the receiver.

"Sir, the internal servers have been breached," the lead analyst's voice was trembling. "Clyde Watson's credentials were used to leak the private equity drafts to the press. If you don't authorize the legal freeze and the counter-buyout in the next ten minutes, the stock will bottom out. Your elders are on line two, demanding your resignation."

"Authorization code Alpha-Niner-Zero," I hissed, leaning my forehead against the cool wood of my desk.

My heart was in the foyer with Jay-Jay, but my hands were tied to this desk. "Start the freeze. I don't care what it costs. File the injunction against Clyde immediately."

I looked at the closed door of my study. I could almost feel Jay-Jay on the other side, her heart breaking because I wasn't there to hold the pieces together.

Just five minutes, I told myself, even as the analyst started rattling off more disasters. I just need to save the empire so I can give it to her. She has to understand. She has to.

But as the minutes ticked by and the "five minutes" turned into an hour of corporate warfare, the silence from the foyer became more terrifying than any board member's threat. I was winning the company back, but I could feel my grip on the only thing that mattered slipping through my fingers like sand.

--: Jay-Jay's POV: --

The foyer was empty now, save for the ghosts of the conversation we just had. The others had drifted away, sensing the explosion, but the air was still thick with the scent of Keifer's cologne and the cold, metallic sting of betrayal.

I stood there for a long time, staring at the study door. He didn't come out in five minutes. He didn't come out in ten.

I turned around, feeling small and hollow, and that's when I saw a shadow moving near the kitchen.

Clyde was leaning against the archway, a glass of amber liquid in his hand and a look of pure, serpentine victory on his face. He had been watching the whole thing.

"He ran away? He chose the desk, didn't he? Huhh! Typical Keifer behaviour" Clyde whispered, his voice oily and mocking. "Welcome to the real Watson life, Jay-Jay. You'll always be second place to a conference call."

I didn't even have the strength to yell at him. I just turned and walked toward the stairs, my vision blurred by a fresh wave of tears. The serpent hadn't just entered the house; he was already rearranging the furniture.
