The echo of Petra's kick against the goblin axe should have faded by now. Sound died quickly in tunnels like this, absorbed by stone and darkness.
Instead, it seemed to deepen. Changed from a sharp metallic ring into something else entirely. Something that vibrated through the soles of Rhys's boots and climbed up his spine.
"Did you hear that?" He turned toward the sound. His spear came up instinctively to guard position. The shaft felt natural in his hands after years of training and fighting. Whatever was coming, he'd face it the way he'd faced everything else.
Standing.
"Hear what?" Petra was already moving toward the next tunnel junction. Her footsteps crunched on debris. She didn't bother to look back.
