Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: Ice Dragon Rescue, the Demon System

"Why is the Giant Lizard Pseudo-Dragon appearing here?!" Lu Nian's face changed drastically.

He no longer cared about the students — the pseudo-dragon was clearly targeting them.

The stronger a mage's cultivation, the denser their magic energy, and the greater the temptation to demons.

The weakest among Lu Nian's troops were mid-level mages. Their magic energy far surpassed that of the student team, which made them perfect prey.

"Don't just stand there like idiots — run!!"

Mo Fan was the first to react. He shouted and bolted into the trees, and the others immediately scattered in panic.

"You guys, go capture Mo Fan and the others! I'll hold this beast off!"

Even in the face of a commander-level creature, Lu Nian's battlefield experience kept him from losing his composure.

At his command, the other military mages fanned out, most heading toward Mo Fan's direction.

"You fool! Still standing there? You want to die?" Lu Nian barked at Lu Zhenghe, who froze in fear.

Against a commander-level demon, even a high-level mage could be torn apart — what chance did a mid-level mage have?

Lu Zhenghe hesitated, torn between fleeing and staying beside his brother.

Convinced that his elder brother's power was his safest bet, he lingered for one heartbeat too long.

Then he felt it — a crushing shadow swallowing the ground beneath him. The pseudo-dragon's killing intent froze his blood.

"Idiot!"

Lu Nian cursed, throwing away his pipe. His pupils turned dark brown as an earthen constellation flared beneath his feet.

"Eye of the Rock Demon: Earth Dragon Thorns!"

Spikes of stone burst from the ground, driving toward the pseudo-dragon's claws. The attack bought Lu Zhenghe just enough time to escape death by inches.

Meanwhile, the others had scattered into several small groups.

Mo Fan drew most of the attention, while Mu Ningxue, Mu Nujiao, Xu Zhaoting, and Zhao Manyan fled in another direction.

"What's wrong with these maniacs? They're still chasing us!"

Zhao Manyan's expression was grim. "I thought the monsters were bad enough — now we've got the military after us too?!"

Mu Ningxue, Mu Nujiao, and Xu Zhaoting all had Wind Element magic, and Zhao Manyan's enchanted shoes boosted his speed.

Together, they managed to stay ahead of pursuit for now.

"Quit talking and think of a plan!" Xu Zhaoting snapped.

He knew they couldn't keep running forever — the military mages would catch up sooner or later.

Mu Ningxue glanced back, cold eyes narrowing. She stopped abruptly, drawing the Ice Crystal Brake Bow.

Before she could fire, a roaring gust swept through the forest. A massive ice dragon descended from the sky, wings shimmering in moonlight.

Standing atop it was a familiar figure — Mu Nianbing.

"Brother Bing?!" Zhao Manyan's voice cracked in disbelief.

Mu Nujiao and Xu Zhaoting stopped running, relief flooding their faces. With Mu Nianbing here, they were safe.

The military mages froze, staring up in horror.

It was too late to cast spells. Even if they could, no mid- or high-level magic could match the sheer power of the Ice Dragon.

Boom!!!

The impact thundered through the forest. Shards of ice exploded in every direction, the air plunging by more than ten degrees.

When the storm cleared, only shattered ice remained where the military mages had stood — their bodies frozen and blown apart.

Mu Nianbing scanned the wreckage. There wasn't even blood left behind.

"As expected," he muttered. "No Blood Weapons among them."

He didn't care anyway. Blood Lilies held no interest for him.

"Brother Bing!!"

Zhao Manyan rushed forward, arms open in gratitude — only for Mu Nianbing to push him aside coldly.

Mu Nujiao and Xu Zhaoting approached with wide eyes, still shaken by what they'd witnessed.

Mu Nianbing turned to Mu Ningxue, gaze lingering on her bow.

"This weapon is too much of a burden on you," he said quietly. "Don't use it unless absolutely necessary."

The Ice Crystal Brake Bow was incomplete — its missing fragments still within the Mu Family. Until they were recovered, it would keep draining Mu Ningxue's soul.

She nodded, stowing the bow.

"Why are you here?" Mu Nujiao asked, still in awe. "Did you know something would happen?"

"I had my suspicions," Mu Nianbing replied calmly. "Lu Nian is Lu Zhenghe's elder brother. I figured he might try something, so I came to check."

Zhao Manyan's jaw dropped. "You're telling me that just because of that little feud, Lu Nian's trying to kill all of us?"

"That's not quite it," Mu Nianbing said. "Lu Nian wanted to silence you."

"Silence us?" Mu Nujiao echoed in confusion.

Mu Nianbing's expression darkened. "He's been researching a forbidden new magic system — and Mo Fan was his test subject. Since the research was banned, they wanted to erase all witnesses."

The four of them were stunned.

That system — the Demonic System — was a secret never meant to see the light of day.

It was powerful, yes, but cursed by impossible limitations.

A mage needed to be born with dual elements just to qualify.

Worse still, the user had to possess a special spiritual artifact to absorb essence and souls — otherwise, the transformation would drive them mad.

Only Mo Fan, with his Little Loach Pendant, could endure it.

To everyone else, it was a death sentence.

"The Demon System…" Xu Zhaoting murmured. "So that's why the military came after us."

Zhao Manyan sighed heavily. "So it wasn't our bad luck — it was Mo Fan's cursed fortune dragging us in."

Mu Nianbing's eyes gleamed faintly. Dean Songhe knew all of this, he thought coldly. And he still sent these students out here.

That old fox definitely had ulterior motives.

"Do you know where the others are?" Mu Nianbing asked.

"We split up after the pseudo-dragon appeared," Xu Zhaoting replied, shaking his head.

"We don't know where anyone else went. I just hope they're alive."

Mu Nianbing nodded, his gaze turning toward the horizon — where distant tremors still echoed in the night.

"Then we'll find them," he said, eyes like shards of ice. "Before this night claims anyone else."
