Cassidy was on her feet before Mrs. Tanaka finished speaking.
The housekeeper had her phone pressed to her ear, her face blank in that infuriating way servants learned when they'd been betraying you for years. Cassidy had always suspected. Had always known something was off about the way Mrs. Tanaka appeared at convenient moments, the way she lingered in doorways, the way her eyes tracked conversations like she was recording them for later playback.
Now she had proof.
"Hang up the phone," Cassidy said.
Her voice came out low and dangerous, the voice she used right before she threw a punch. The voice that made boys twice her size step back and reconsider their life choices.
Mrs. Tanaka didn't even flinch. "Mrs. Valentine needs to know—"
Cassidy crossed the room in three strides and snatched the phone from the housekeeper's hand. The woman's grip was weak, startled, unprepared for someone to actually challenge her authority. Cassidy brought the phone to her own ear.
