Chapter 56 - The First Crack

Selene was serving wine at a small council dinner three days after Damian had refused to claim her.

The dinner was informal. Just Damian and five of his most trusted advisors discussing border policies and tax reforms. Boring political matters that Selene was supposed to ignore while she served. The dining room was intimate compared to the grand hall, with dark wood paneling and a table that seated eight comfortably. Candles flickered in silver holders, casting warm light that made the polished wood gleam. The air smelled of roasted meat and fresh bread, underlaid with the earthy scent of the wine she was pouring.

But as she refilled goblets and cleared plates, she listened. Absorbing information. Learning about the kingdom and its challenges. The crystal glasses chimed softly when she set them down, a delicate counterpoint to the serious conversation.

And hearing things that confused her more than ever.
