I went back into the central corridor and indicated to Minsoo with two fingers; he at once noticed my movement, his hand moving towards the bow case at his hip while Sujin lifted her shield from the bench.
The noise caused by the scraping on the roof kept on happening, after which came a weak thud as the heavy boots landed on the upper part of the wooden deck above my bedroom.
I told Minsoo to go up the back stairwell to the roof, keeping my voice low, and I asked Sujin to lock the front lobby doors; if anyone tried to get down through the skylight then she was to hit them with a shield slam.
Minsoo nodded and then turned on his heel, moving up the narrow wooden steps in silence. Sujin positioned herself under the ceiling of the central hall, placing the soles of her boots wide on the rug as she raised her heavy black-steel shield towards the glass rafters.
