The afternoon sun sat high in the sky as the car rolled steadily along the quiet road stretching beyond the edge of the city. Traffic had long since thinned out, leaving the highway mostly open except for the occasional truck drifting past in the opposite lane. Light poured through the windshield and spread across the dashboard in a warm glow, though the atmosphere inside the car remained far from calm.
Drogo kept both hands on the steering wheel, his posture rigid as his eyes stayed fixed on the road ahead. He looked like a man concentrating on more than driving.
Karen, meanwhile, looked perfectly comfortable.
She had pushed the seat back slightly and rested one elbow against the door while watching the landscape pass by outside the window. The oversized shirt she had taken from him hung loosely around her frame, the sleeves rolled halfway up her forearms. The baggy shorts barely fit her properly, though she seemed entirely unconcerned by that fact.
