Chapter 104 - Chapter 104: Vidur's Resentment

As Karna and Shaurya approached Hastinapur, the sprawling city came into view. Its towering walls and majestic palaces spoke of its rich history and power.

But Karna knew that beneath the grandeur lay a web of complex politics and alliances, and it was these intricacies that he would have to navigate during his diplomatic mission.

Upon arriving at the city gates, Karna descended his chariot, dismissing it temporarily to be safely stored. He could sense the eyes of the city's guards upon him, and it was clear that his arrival had not gone unnoticed.

A messenger from King Dhritarashtra's court, dressed in fine attire, approached Karna with a respectful bow. "Angraj Karna, I bring you greetings from King Dhritarashtra. His Majesty awaits your arrival at the royal palace and requests your presence at the earliest convenience."

Karna nodded in acknowledgement and signalled for the messenger to lead the way. As they made their way through the bustling streets of Hastinapur, Karna couldn't help but notice the mixed reactions of the city's residents.

Some regarded him with familiarity and were waving hands in welcome, recognizing him as a respected warrior-king, while others watched with curiosity or caution.

The royal palace of Hastinapur loomed ahead, a sprawling complex of grandeur and power. Guards in ornate armour stood at attention as Karna and Shaurya entered the palace grounds.

Inside the palace, Karna was led through opulent corridors adorned with intricate artwork and exemplary tapestries, a testament to the city's wealth and heritage. They finally arrived at a grand chamber where King Dhritarashtra, along with his advisors and courtiers, awaited Karna's arrival.

King Dhritarashtra, though blind, exuded an air of authority and wisdom. He rose from his throne to greet Karna, extending his hand in a gesture of welcome. "Angraj Karna, I am honoured by your presence in Hastinapur. Please, be seated."

Karna bowed respectfully and took a seat as instructed, his celestial lion, Shaurya, settling beside him. The atmosphere in the chamber was tense, and Karna could sense the weight of the discussions that were about to unfold.

King Dhritarashtra began the proceedings, "I have invited you here, Angraj Karna, to address the growing concerns and tensions in our region. It is my hope that through open and honest dialogue, we can find a path to resolve these issues peacefully."

Karna nodded in agreement, his tone respectful yet firm. "I appreciate your willingness to engage in dialogue, King Dhritarashtra. I share your desire for peace and stability in our region. Let us discuss the concerns that have brought us here and work towards a resolution."

The diplomatic discussions between Karna and King Dhritarashtra began in earnest, each leader laying out their grievances and concerns. The issues at hand were complex and deeply rooted, making the negotiations a delicate and intricate process.

King Dhritarashtra's advisors and courtiers chimed in with their perspectives, offering a range of solutions and proposals. Karna listened attentively, taking in the various viewpoints presented.

As the discussions continued, Karna remained steadfast in representing the interests of Anga and its people. His commitment to peace and diplomacy was evident, and he sought common ground even in the face of differing opinions.

But then Vidur who had been silent till now said the most important question with self-amusement which was, "Why did your kingdom take over the governance of Shindu, Magadha kingdom and their territories, Angraj Karna? This action has raised many concerns and questions among our people."

Mahamantri Vidur was a very petty person who took grudges very seriously. He had harboured resentment towards Karna for years due to past events and now saw an opportunity to voice his grievances.

'Divine Insight'

Karna activated his "Divine Insight," a skill that allowed him to gain deep insights and understanding into complex situations and people's motivations. It was a formidable ability, one that had served him well in the past.

As he focused his divine insight on Vidur's question and the motives behind it, he perceived the deeper layers of the situation. Vidur's inquiry was not just about governance; it carried a weight of personal resentment and political manoeuvring.

With this newfound insight, Karna responded with a calm and measured tone, addressing both the question and the underlying concerns. "Mahamantri Vidur, the governance of Shindu and Magadha was undertaken in response to complex political circumstances and with the well-being of our region in mind. It was not a decision taken lightly."

Karna continued, his voice carrying an air of authority, "Our actions were driven by a desire to maintain stability and security in these territories, which were previously marked by unrest and conflicts. It was a measure to ensure the safety of our people and the prosperity of our region."

Shaurya who was sitting quietly this whole time stood up and purred while putting his head on Karna's lap while looking at Vidur with cold eyes which promised pain if any further attempts to disrupt the diplomatic proceedings were made.

Vidur, under the watchful gaze of Karna and Shaurya, seemed to understand the gravity of the situation. His personal vendetta was not worth jeopardizing the delicate negotiations between their kingdoms. He nodded in reluctant acknowledgement of Karna's explanation.

"Angraj Karna, I understand your perspective," Vidur replied, his tone less confrontational. "It is important for us to address the concerns of our people and ensure the stability of our region. I hope these discussions will lead to a resolution that benefits both our kingdoms."

Karna inclined his head in acknowledgement of Vidur's words. It was a small victory for diplomacy, and he was determined to continue working towards a peaceful resolution.

The discussions continued, with Karna and King Dhritarashtra delving into the intricacies of governance, alliances, and the shared responsibilities of neighbouring kingdoms. It was a long and challenging process, but both leaders were committed to finding common ground.

As the hours passed, Karna's celestial lion, Shaurya, remained a symbol of his unwavering resolve and a silent reminder of the consequences of disrupting the proceedings. The negotiations were far from over, but progress was being made, one step at a time.

"Why don't you stay in Hastinapur for a while, Angraj Karna?" King Dhritarashtra suggested after a particularly productive session of discussions. "It would provide us with more time to continue these talks and build trust between our kingdoms... And my queen also wants to see you again after so many years."

Karna considered King Dhritarashtra's suggestion. While his primary duty was to represent the interests of Anga, he also recognized the importance of building trust and fostering a positive relationship between their kingdoms. Additionally, the mention of meeting Queen Gandhari, who was like a mother to him when he was a kid—

[You are still a kid, Karna~]

Karna chuckled internally at Artemis's playful remark but continued to weigh his options. The idea of staying in Hastinapur for a while did have its merits, especially if it meant furthering diplomatic discussions and strengthening ties between their kingdoms.

"I appreciate your offer, King Dhritarashtra," Karna replied, his voice conveying his sincerity. "I am willing to stay in Hastinapur for a time to continue our discussions and build trust between our kingdoms. Meeting Queen Gandhari would be an honour, and I look forward to it."

King Dhritarashtra nodded in appreciation of Karna's willingness to extend his stay. "Very well, Angraj Karna. We shall make the necessary arrangements for your accommodation and ensure that these discussions proceed smoothly."

As the meeting concluded, Karna and his celestial lion, Shaurya, were led to their quarters within the royal palace. The diplomatic mission had taken an unexpected turn, but Karna remained steadfast in his commitment to securing the best possible outcome for Anga and its people.

After some time a servant came in and said that Queen Gandhari was asking permission to enter, Karna told him to let her enter with a wary smile on his face.

Queen Gandhari entered the quarters with a graceful and regal demeanour. Her presence exuded a sense of wisdom and kindness, But upon seeing him her expression turned into a fit of mocking anger and pout, Karna couldn't help but be taken aback by the sudden shift in Queen Gandhari's demeanour. Her initial grace and regal bearing had given way to an unexpected display of anger and a teasing pout.

"O' Almighty Angraj Karna finally decides to grace us with his presence," Queen Gandhari said in a playful yet scolding tone. "You've been away for far too long. Do you have any idea how much I missed you, dear Karna?"

Karna was taken aback by Queen Gandhari's playful scolding, but a warm smile formed on his face. Her words carried a sense of familiarity and affection that he had missed over the years.

"Queen Gandha—"

"Mother!"

Queen Gandhari's correction was swift and accompanied by a teasing glint in her eyes because he was there when she herself didn't have any children of her own.

Karna's surprise was evident as Queen Gandhari corrected him with a playful glint in her eyes. "Mother," he echoed, the word carrying a depth of respect and affection.

'What's with older women wanting to be my mother and all that.'

Queen Gandhari's demeanour softened, and she approached Karna with open arms. Without hesitation, Karna embraced her, and the queen held him tightly, a mother's love evident in the gesture.

"I've missed you too, dear Karna," Queen Gandhari whispered, her voice filled with warmth and maternal love. "It's been far too long since we've had the chance to spend time together."

Karna returned Queen Gandhari's embrace with genuine affection. The years had passed, and their lives had taken different paths, but the bond between them remained strong. It was a testament to the enduring connection they had forged during his childhood.

"I cherish the moments we have together, Mother," Karna said sincerely. "Your guidance and care have meant the world to me."

Queen Gandhari pulled back slightly, her hands resting on Karna's shoulders as she regarded him with a warm smile. "You've grown into a remarkable man, Karna, and I couldn't be prouder of the person you've become."

"Mother, What are you doing here? and Who is he?"
