Chapter 9 - Dupont's Classes

From the moment you are 10 in the orphanage, Madame Dupont starts teaching you the basics: how to read the maps and know places when you get lost, the nobles and their rank in society, random lords and ladies in service to the Kingdom, and what have you.

Do note, Amovia may seem like a small place, but assume it to be the Asian continent at least, because how Madame Dupont describes the towns, cities and villages, you can tell it's not small.

The Kingdom of Amovia has 4 districts, the Western, Eastern, Southern and Northern regions. They don't have any special names, just 'this District' or 'that District'.

The Northern District was the main district, because it houses the monarchy, the Harcourts. The district's source of revenue is generated from its abundance of mines(gems) and livestock(meat). They had the regular animals I knew, but for the gems, they had one called an Ovemethium. It shines like a diamond, but it has the look of an opal. The monarchy lives in the centre of the district, the city - Aulaste. There are three towns as well; Polsavia, Lotaria and Thermovia, which are governed by the Dukedoms Evershade and Brightmere, and the March Nightvale respectively.

The Southern District is rich in foodstuffs, because it rarely snows there, practically making it seem like a desert(but it isn't). Their fruits and vegetables had strange names, like Sundrops(looks like an apple but has this spicy taste) and the Mullen fruit(it smells sweet, but it's really sour). It has 1 city and 2 towns; Kashmire, the city(governed by the Ashbourne March), Nubessa(governed by the Earldom Luminara) and Kraslovia(governed by the Viscountcy Blackwater).

The Western region also thrived in foodstuff production, but whereas it didn't snow a lot in the Southern District, it rained and snowed a lot here. They had a lot of mountains and cliffs, and it had a lot of forests. The city there, Hexille, was governed by the famous March Ravenscar(they were the Kingdom's source of soldiers and mages). The 4 towns, Hemeres, Venus, Mulsana and Xenos were governed by two Earldoms(Cyrena-Hill and Moonfall) and Viscountcies(Hallowcrest and Brooke-Symone) respectively. After from that, it actually had two villages, Farrsday and Nixle, which were governed by the Baroncy Amethium. Aside from these nobles, there was a lower noble called Baronet Vix. They helped the baroncy with daily management and random checkups on the villages.

Lastly, my district, the Eastern District. It is actually a coastal district, hence we trade with other Kingdoms and it's actually the next richest district after the Northern District. They deal in spices and have the greatest fishermen in the Kingdom. As you well know, Baron Miswards governs my village, Cuvia, but there are three other regions he governs; Nyxoria, Solrana and Lovia. We had a city called Yveta, which was governed by the March Thorneveil. The two towns, Starflale and Felimen were governed by the Earldom Starmetia and Viscountcy Starwayne.

In total, there are two Dukedoms, four Marches, four Earldoms, four Viscountcies and two Baroncies. That is not to say there aren't ladies, lords and knights in the Kingdom(don't forget the baronet). People blessed by the noble's are required to live in the castles of those who blessed them(the castles are practically like a huge estate with different families staying there).

The nobles all belong to the aristocratic faction, where the higher faction are the monarchy, the Dukedoms Evershade and Brightmere, and the Marches Nightvale,Ravenscar and the Earldom Starmetia.

This world has 13 months, and each month is like an acknowledgement of each god and goddess it's named after.

1. Primilia(First of the year) -The Primordial One.

2. Florentis(Flowering) - Florence.

3. Aestivalis(Summer's Peak) - Aestval.

4. Luminaria(Light-filled) - Lumina.

5. Terraverde(Green Earth) - Terra.

6. Solsiticium(Solstice Time) - Solsticie.

7. Umbratia(Shadowed) - Umbra.

8. Stelliferi(Star-bearing) - Stella.

9. Aquilonia(Rainy) - Aquino.

10. Ventosa(Windy) - Veneto.

11. Glaciaria(Icy Frost) - Glacie.

12. Silvatica(Forest's Heart) - Silver.

13. Mysteriorum(Mysteries) - Mystica.

Each month has exactly 31 days, meaning a year is 403 days. The years aren't 2019 or 1993 or BC or AD. It's all Harcourt. So this year is the 209th year of the Harcourt rule. There was once a time where it wasn't the Harcourts that were ruling, but since one of their ancestors, Historia Harcourt, decided to adopt a nephew from their family line to take over the throne after her(since she never got married), they have been in power ever since.

The Temple of Amovia is situated close to the Harcourt Estate. They have a head priest who deals with the oracle directly, as well as other priests who guide and conduct services in the temple. Every year, in the month Aestivalis, the Celestial Pilgrimage is conducted. This is to select the chosen, children who have magical abilities. The way of telling these abilities is through a small orb. It only indicates whether you have an ability or not. We later on found out that there's a bigger orb in the Academy which helps to identify which ability the child has.

The chosen are to attend the Academy of Basic and Advanced Magics by the age of 11 or when they are in their 11th year. It is situated at the centre of the Kingdom, where all the district borders meet. You are required to be in school from 11 to 18, where upon completing, a ceremony is held to help students decide which careers they want to go to. The school is divided into two schools; the Common school and the Legacy school. When everyone attends the school, the lower class attends the Common school whiles the nobles attend the Legacy class, because it is assumed that the nobles naturally have advanced magic. It is only when a test is done during the first year that everyone is sent to their respective classes.

Unfortunately, those with no abilities are just sent to normal schools, there's one for each district. They teach basic skills and literacy, embroidery for girls and basic sword skills for boys. Madame Dupont planned on sending a plea to the monarchy, for the schools to be merged into one school for those not gifted. "It could even be near the Academy", I heard her tell a stranger one time, "it's not fair that only those who have gifts can enjoy a good education, and the nobles are already home schooled, so it makes the lower class less involving in society".

Apart from the temple, there are a group of people called the Secret Society. Whereas there are basic magics, advanced magics and secret magics, they have managed to manipulate the system in order to cultivate reverse magic. Just think of it as the negative version of the magic system. But there is a twist; they can't counter healing magic. No one knows their hiding grounds, only that they move in groups and as wanderers. Once you decide to join them, you can no longer stay at home. It has been yet to confirm whether the gifted can or cannot gain these abilities, and whether the non gifted can inherit these abilities or not.

There are also tales of the Secret Oracle. Only those who have secret magics can train in the Secret Oracle. This is because they are ancient priests who have been hand-picked by the Primordial One to teach others. They are the first of their kind, hence, they are immortal. There is a section of the Temple of Amovia dedicated to them.

The Secret Oracle has its own followers, but it doesn't mean they have those magic abilities. Rather, they present offers and honour the ancient priests with magical items, which in a sense increases the ranges of the priests' abilities. Once you acquire a secret magic, you are required to present yourself before the Secret Oracle.

There are five stages to be an Acknowledged, a title given to those who have mastered their abilities.

First stage - Aether. This is where you start your journey. Usually the tasks given to you aren't easy, and you might begin to contemplate whether you want to go on or not. This stage is usually the scariest, because when you don't convince them that you are worthy to wield the magic, it would be striped away from you(though it has never happened before).

Second stage - Devotio. After gaining recognition from the priests, more pressing tasks are given. You would be working alongside the priests as apprentices, but it doesn't mean you can't get to live your life as you choose. The important thing to note is that you are serving society, not just the nobles(Fun fact: the nobles have no control over the Temple of Amovia).

Third stage - Decisio. You are given a free period to enhance your skills at your own pace, and opportunity is given to those who want to learn the other form of magic. For instance if I already have Dream magic I can also start to learn Shadow magic, but I wouldn't be as good as I am with my natural ability.

Fourth stage - Amicus. It is required that at this stage you must have a familiar. A familiar is a pet or a magical being who serves as a companion to you in your magical growth. You do not get to choose your familiar, your familiar chooses you. In order to get a familiar, you are sent to the enchanted forest, which had been blessed by the goddess Terra.

The fifth and last stage - Astra. A test is conducted to see if they are worthy of being called the Acknowledged. You are sent forth to a Kingdom for a month, and during that month many tasks given to you as if you're a priest from the Secret Oracle. You are to complete them before the month ends, or else you'd have to start the process again.
