Chapter 30 - Being Human -> Preparations after the Accident.

In a dark alley, in between two storey buildings an unknown figure is seen trying to locate a place using a map on his phone, if you're wondering how he got there you're going to have to rewind time back to two weeks ago when a circular crimson portal appeared on the path.

After sticking his head in and out of the portal he returned to the rails which were along the road to sit as he watched the portal close slowly, he waited for someone to show up and pick him up, but nobody came to that part of the road the unknown figure was camped out in, for the entire day, the unknown figure began to think aloud:

"Could today get any crazier?"

"I always thought I would die through a shot in the head but now I'm going to die because I've being abandoned by everyone."

The unknown figure brought the picture containing he and a little girl playing on the snow to his face before saying the next words:

"What an irony, It seems only fair since I have no family left apart from her."

With that, the unknown figure prepared to sleep behind the railing at the other side of the road, he slept roughly often shifting around and opening his eyes to observe his surroundings frequently.

The next day, he opened his eyes and returned to sit down on the railing hoping a car will pass by to help him, a few minutes before noon a forest green van containing a medium sized fair old man who had a part of his head bald while a thin layer of white hair surrounded the bald patch, his body was covered with old wrinkly skin, glassy blue pupils on his eyes, a well ironed and button blue coat containing three chevrons and an arc in the sleeve around his arm. He also wore a green trouser and a well polished black shoe, he was driving the van when he saw the unknown figure appear around the road, rudely obscuring his view with frequent hand gestures.

The sergeant cursed a little before parking his vehicle at the side of the road before stepping out of the vehicle to see what the problem was. The sergeant asked:

"What's up mate, Hope no problem."

"I don't see a lot of drifters around here."

The unknown figure wanted to tell the sergeant he wasn't a drifter but before he could talk he noticed the expression on the sergeant's face, the unknown figure turned to look around his body.

He looked soggy, with bits of mud splashing all around his cloth, the unknown figure frowned lightly before asking the sergeant:

"Do you mind me hitching a ride with you out of here?"

The sergeant replied:

"As long as you sit in the back."

"But before we head in the other direction I have some packages to deliver to base."

The unknown figure had a bright smile on his face, and a ray of hope after finding out he would soon leave the strange road soon.

The sergeant said:

"Hop in!"

The unknown figure jumped to the back of the van that contained a seat obscured with a dark green curtain, he sat on the seat and covered himself up with the dark green curtain. The sergeant started the van and the journey to the base started, the sergeant dropped a few things in the base while the unknown figure stayed hidden at the back of the van, soon the sergeant returned from the base to the van before beginning the journey back to the city.

The unknown figure was taken to a subway where he used his credit card to buy some tickets, that took him to a motel downtown. The unknown figure went to a mall to get some clothes and foodstuffs before entering his room in the motel, he took off his clothes, went for a shower and put on some light clothing which he wore to sleep. He rested comfortably on the bed due to thewarmth he received from the soft foam and pillow, he soon slept off immediately.

The next day, the unknown figure looked rested and clean as he began to break some eggs to make a spread of bread, bacon and eggs. He ate until he was satisfied before calling a tow truck to tow his pick-up truck and rent a small car he could use for transport for the day.

He drove in front of the tow truck directing the truck to where his pick-up was ditched, it was then towed to the shop of a mechanic, he fixed his pick-up the third day and headed for the hospital his daughter was in the fourth day.

When he arrived at the hospital he saw different patients with light wounds, some had bone fractures and internal bleeding but his eyes didn't waver as he gave the nurse attending to him his identification card, he walked to where his young daughter lay just as he had done many times before he passed the "intensive care" section and saw a lit of empty beds, only two were closed so he saw approached the only other room that was closed apart from that of his daughter. He saw a small black girl smiling with her family, he let out a little cry before proceeding to the door his daughter laid.

He admired his daughter short brown hair, beautiful little eyes that were closed, pale skin on her face and little pink lips, the rest of her body was shrouded in a blanket while her head rested on a soft pillow. He caressed her head slowly brushing around her neat brown hair while smiling with teary eyes.

He tried telling her that he had been fired from work and had a terrible accident but he could only tell her a short story about his glory days one where he was a high ranking major who fought in the war.

He smiled softly at the end of the story, walked out of the door while looking at his daughter one last time before heading out of the room, as he was departing from the hospital a man wearing a lab coat, a top tucked inside his lab coat and a long blue trousers with neatly brushed black hair was approaching him holding pieces of important documents neatly stapled together.

The doctor handed the documents over to the unknown figure, he signed the spaces that were indicated for him to sign while looking for the place the increased price was written, he had a very grim expression on his face when he found out that after this month his insurance company wouldn't cover the treatment for his daughter and the bills he would have to pay will rise significantly.

He finished signing the documents and walked out of the hospital, heading to a bar, he drank a few bottles of beer before entering a cab back to the motel.

He had booked the motel for five days so at the fifth day he backed his luggages into his pick-up and headed for the road, hoping to decide along the way what to do next.
