Chapter 169 - War -> The enchanted domain.

Love arrived at the enchanted domain—the sacred haven the elves called home—just a few moments ago. Moving with quiet caution, she sought to conceal herself within the shadows, determined to get the lay of the land before presenting her dire news to the queen, a majestic figure whom Willow had once described in vivid detail.

As she navigated the outer edges of the realm, she scouted her surroundings for deep shades and crowded thoroughfares where her presence might easily blend in, carefully avoiding open areas where her rugged appearance would instantly draw unwanted eyes. Yet, despite her caution, she couldn't help but marvel at the spellbinding sights around her.

Luminous flora cast a soft, ethereal glow across winding silver pathways, and ancient trees arched overhead like living cathedrals, whispering with centuries of forgotten magical culture. The sheer beauty of the sanctuary felt entirely alien to a battle-worn wanderer accustomed only to blood, dirt, and brutal survival.

Despite its grand title, the enchanted domain lacked the fairytale splendour one might expect. It possessed no soaring stone pillars, fortified walls, or grand mythical castles, nor were there glowing ley lines infusing the earth with palpable magic. Yet, in its own subtle way, the domain remained distinctly unique, setting itself apart from the grime of New Darkovia and the untamed wilderness Love had previously traversed.

In truth, it bore a striking resemblance to a natural forest. However, as Love edged closer to the inner settlement, the thick undergrowth began to clear, the towering trees thinned, and the wildlife grew scarce—gradually giving way to the dense population of elves occupying the heart of the realm. Carved directly into the massive trunks of ancient oaks, elegant wooden dwellings took the place of stone masonry, blending seamlessly into the canopy above. Lanterns fueled by bioluminescent moss cast a warm, tranquil light over bustling walkways, creating a civilized harmony that felt entirely foreign to the harsh, unforgiving wilds Love had barely survived.

The opening sights of the enchanted domain possessed a quiet, breathtaking grandeur that frequently caught Love off guard. Even as she crept along the shadows to avoid open spaces, she found herself pausing in awe to admire the living architecture surrounding her.

What captivated her most was how seamlessly the elves integrated their homes into the natural world. Rather than felling timber, they sculpted living treehouses by gently hollowing out the massive trunks or weaving the sturdy boughs of adjacent trees together without severing a single branch.

Where structural support was lacking, they carefully bound fallen limbs and scavenged wood, refusing to inflict harm upon the forest. To a hunter who had only ever known nature as a brutal arena of bloody competition, this gentle reverence for the land felt nearly alien. It was a stark, humbling reminder that strength did not always require destruction, and that life could flourish through harmony rather than force.

Respect for the forest extended far beyond their architecture; it governed the elves' entire relationship with plant life. Though Love had to remain hidden, her quick observations revealed a stark contrast between elven stewardship and human destruction. Where humans leveled forests into barren stumps to forge roads, the elves merely pruned non-essential branches to encourage taller, healthier growth. Where humans burned bush to clear land for settlements, the elves allowed grasses, shrubs, and wild weeds to thrive naturally alongside their crops.

Rather than paving paths through the undergrowth, the elves took to the canopy above. They created a fluid transit system high in the boughs—swinging from limbs, leaping between trunks, and moving across thin branches with the grace of wild acrobats. Love found herself forced to emulate their aerial pathing to stay out of sight. However, lacking their refined balance and elven physiology, she found the dizzying heights harrowing, choosing to stick to ground level whenever the terrain permitted.

Overall, Love found herself genuinely enjoying her time in the enchanted domain, despite her outsider status and her growing anxiety over how the elven queen would receive her dire warning. Nightfall approached swiftly, and soon the canopy burst into life with warm, golden lights. It was a spellbinding sight. Having spent endless nights trudging through the pitch-black wilderness desperate just to survive, Love had deeply missed the comforting glow of light.

Above her, the treetops glowed like a radiant sky, while the forest floor below remained shrouded in deep shadow—a striking, almost eerie contrast. She briefly considered pitching her tent in the lower darkness, as there was no flat ground among the dense cluster of treehouses. At the last moment, however, she decided against it. Instead, she chose to seek proper lodging using a few coins she had deftly swiped earlier from an unsuspecting elf.

She was approaching a distinctly crafted treehouse that bore the inviting look of an inn when a quick scan of her surroundings stopped her in her tracks. Just a few meters away stood another structure bearing the sign of an anvil. Peering through its window, her eyes widened as she caught sight of an unmistakably familiar bow.

Love subtly edged closer to the workshop, her gaze drawn to the stunning array of handcrafted weapons displayed within. She was completely mesmerized by the sheer mastery of elven craftsmanship. The intricate designs, the exotic materials, and the flawless, seamless assembly of each blade and bow were simply astounding.

Looking down at her own double-headed wooden spear, she realized there was no true comparison. Next to these masterpieces, her weapon appeared dull, crude, and painfully primitive. Yet, the only thing that gave her humble spear any worth was the history they shared.

She had carried it through brutal trials, gradually forging it into an extension of her own body. Unattractive and makeshift as it was, it was a weapon she knew she could rely on with her life. In a world of refined elegance, her rough spear remained a bloody testament to hard-won resilience—a tool forged not for beauty, but for sheer, ruthless survival against impossible odds.

Looking upon the exquisite arsenal before her, a sudden, powerful urge washed over Love to toss her crude spear aside and claim one of these magnificent weapons for herself. Yet, common sense quickly intervened. Such masterwork blades and bows undoubtedly carried an astronomical price—one far beyond the handful of coins she had stolen earlier. Realizing a purchase was impossible, she turned away from the workshop to resume her search for an inn.

However, just as she took a few steps away from the shop, the quiet night air carried the sound of a woman muttering agitatedly to herself:

"Damn it... even my skill isn't what it used to be. My shop was once a vibrant hub filled with worthy weapons and worthier wielders who came to purchase them. Now, it seems just as desolate as I am. Oh, what use am I anymore?"

Hearing the woman's lament, Love briefly considered approaching the smith to explain the real reason she hadn't bought anything—that her pocketbook, not the craft, was at fault. However, she quickly checked herself. Drawing unnecessary attention to her ragged self in a strange land was foolish. She turned to walk away, but before she could take another step, a familiar voice drifted from a few meters away:

"Such an excellent weapon... The materials possess great potential, yet the execution of your craftsmanship leaves much to be desired."
