Chapter 139 - Episode 136: Bamboo Inn — Night → Morning → Old Temple

Evening didn't stay long in the bamboo garden. The green stalks darkened quickly as shadows stretched across the paths, turning everything into a soft, silent world.

Lanterns were lit one by one around the inn. Their soft yellow glow wasn't bright enough to erase the darkness, but it was gentle enough to live warmly inside it.

Dinner ended quietly without any rush. No one hurried away afterward; instead, the group stayed together in the courtyard, letting the night settle around them.

Kai started the conversation, as expected. "Okay," he said, clapping once softly.

"We can't just sit and become philosophical.""We can," Rui replied calmly.

"I refuse." Dev leaned forward slightly.

"…what do you want to do." Kai thought for exactly two seconds.

"Truth or dare.""No," Chen said immediately, his voice flat and firm.

Kai looked genuinely offended. "You didn't even consider it."

"I did." A short pause followed.

"Answer is still no." Rui smirked faintly.

"Rare Chen win." Kai clicked his tongue lightly.

"Fine. New rule." He leaned forward with a small grin.

"Not truth. Not dare.""…then what," Dev asked.

Kai's grin widened. "Just one question."

A pause hung in the air. "Each person answers one thing."

"…about?" Rui asked. Kai shrugged casually.

"Anything. Something small." Silence followed, not from resistance but from quiet consideration.

Then Dev spoke first. "…favorite place."

Kai pointed at him with approval. "Good. See? Smart people exist."

Rui rolled his eyes. "Okay," Kai said, sitting up properly now.

"I'll start." A brief pause settled before he continued.

"…rooftop.""Of course," Rui muttered.

Kai ignored the comment. "Late night. No one around."

Chen listened without interrupting. Dev nodded slightly in understanding.

Rui sighed softly. "…my room."

Kai groaned dramatically. "That's boring."

"It's comfortable." Dev spoke next in his usual quiet tone.

"…library." Kai stared at him in disbelief.

"…you're all disappointing." Chen didn't answer right away.

Then he said calmly. "…somewhere quiet."

Kai leaned forward. "That's not a place."

"It is." Kai opened his mouth, then closed it again.

"…fine." Wei was next and didn't rush his answer.

"…near water." A small pause followed.

"Not crowded." Jian looked at him for just a second longer than usual.

Then Kai turned toward Jian. "You."

Jian didn't answer immediately. "…don't know."

Kai blinked in surprise. "That's illegal."

Jian shrugged lightly. "Never thought about it."

Silence followed, not awkward but complete and peaceful. The game didn't continue after that.

It didn't need to go further. They stayed a little longer in the courtyard, talking less and simply listening more to the night around them.

At some point Kai lay back again on the wooden surface. Rui stopped arguing and relaxed into the quiet.

Dev leaned gently into the stillness. Chen didn't feel the need to correct anyone.

Wei sat perfectly still, taking in the moment. Jian sat beside him, closer than before.

They weren't touching, but no noticeable space remained between them. The bamboo moved softly in the dark, creating a gentle rustling that wrapped around the group.

And the night settled peacefully over the inn.

Morning came colder and clearer. It wasn't harsh, just fresh and sharp in the early light.

Bags were packed quietly. Shoes were found and voices stayed low.

No one rushed through the preparations. The teachers gathered everyone near the entrance with maps already folded and the route clearly decided.

"Today—old temple," Mr. Chen said simply. No long explanation was needed; they already understood.

The group moved out together at a steady pace. The bamboo thinned gradually as they walked, green giving way to stone paths and older, uneven ground.

The air itself changed around them. It became less soft and more still, carrying a deeper quiet.

No one mentioned the shift aloud. But everyone felt it in their own way.

Kai didn't run ahead this time. Rui spoke much less than usual.

Dev stayed quietly observant. Chen walked with his usual steady, reliable steps.

Wei slowed slightly, not from tiredness but because something seemed to pull his attention inward. Jian noticed the change and stayed close without asking any questions.

The temple appeared slowly, not all at once. First the dark, curved edges of the roof cut through the lingering mist.

Then the wide stone steps came into view. Finally the full structure revealed itself.

It didn't feel like an ordinary place people simply visited. It felt like a place that had been patiently waiting through time.

No one spoke as they approached. Even Kai remained silent for once.

They stepped closer together, the group moving as one. And just like that, the trip changed from something light and playful into something deeper and more meaningful.

Without anyone saying it aloud, they all slowed their pace. As if the temple itself required that quiet respect and attention.

The morning light filtered softly through the mist around the ancient stones. The air felt cooler and heavier with history.

Jian stayed near Wei as they walked up the first few steps. Their shoulders brushed lightly once, but neither moved apart.

Wei glanced sideways for a brief moment. Jian met his eyes without words.

The subtle connection between them felt stronger in this new, still atmosphere. Kai trailed a little behind, unusually thoughtful.

Rui walked beside Dev, their usual banter replaced by quiet observation. Chen led the group with calm focus, his presence steady and grounding.

The old temple stood patiently ahead. Its weathered stones and curved roof seemed to hold centuries of silence.

The six of them continued forward together. The transition from the soft bamboo nights to this deeper place felt natural, almost inevitable.

No one resisted the change in mood. They simply allowed the temple's quiet presence to wrap around them.

Something intimate and unspoken continued to grow between Jian and Wei. It lived in the small glances, the shared steps, and the comfortable silence.

The rest of the group moved with the same gentle rhythm. Less noise, more presence.

The path to the temple had carried them through night into morning. Now it led them into something older and quieter than anything they had experienced so far.

They climbed the stone steps slowly. The mist thinned slightly as they rose higher.

The temple waited with open arms of stillness. And the six of them stepped inside its calm embrace together.
