Chapter 26 - Buried Alive

The underground chamber shook violently.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

Ancient stone groaned around them.

Another explosion thundered overhead.

BOOM!

The impact knocked several documents off the tables.

Madison grabbed the edge of a shelf to keep her balance.

Her heart pounded.

This wasn't a warning.

This wasn't intimidation.

Someone was actively trying to bury them.

Alive.

"Ethan!"

Noah shouted.

The ceiling cracked.

Small rocks crashed onto the floor.

Sheriff Brooks immediately pulled out his radio.

Nothing.

Only static.

The signal was gone.

Of course it was.

Because whoever planned this had planned everything.

---

A third explosion echoed through the tunnel.

Closer.

Dangerously close.

The hidden chamber trembled again.

Eleanor's face turned pale.

"We need to move."

Nobody argued.

Not even for a second.

The group immediately began gathering the most important documents.

The journal.

The maps.

The photographs.

The birth certificate.

The letters.

Everything they couldn't afford to lose.

Madison shoved folders into a backpack.

Her hands shook.

Not from fear.

From adrenaline.

Because this had become personal.

Very personal.

Someone had spent months destroying her life.

Threatening people she loved.

Attacking the restaurant.

Lying.

Manipulating.

Hurting everyone around her.

And now they wanted them dead.

The thought made her angry.

Really angry.

---

Another crash echoed above.

Then something terrifying happened.

The tunnel entrance collapsed.

Stone exploded inward.

Wood shattered.

The staircase vanished beneath tons of debris.

The room went silent.

Because everyone understood exactly what had happened.

Their exit was gone.

Completely gone.

Noah stared.

"No."

Sheriff Brooks rushed forward.

Desperately moving debris.

But it was useless.

There was too much.

Far too much.

The tunnel had been sealed.

Madison felt cold.

Very cold.

Because the realization was unavoidable.

Someone knew exactly where they were.

---

For several moments nobody spoke.

Then Ethan did.

"There's another way out."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Ethan pointed toward the blueprints.

The ones referencing Vault Zero.

His eyes locked onto a particular section.

A maintenance passage.

An emergency route.

A forgotten corridor.

"If this chamber connects to Vault Zero..."

His voice remained calm.

Steady.

"We can use that route."

Noah blinked.

"You want to run deeper underground?"

"When the alternative is being crushed?"

Fair point.

Very fair point.

Nobody argued after that.

---

Minutes later.

The group moved through an ancient stone corridor.

Flashlights cut through darkness.

The passage looked impossibly old.

Older than the chamber.

Older than the Trust.

Perhaps older than Magnolia Creek itself.

The walls were covered in strange markings.

Symbols.

Numbers.

Dates.

Generations of messages left behind.

Madison ran her flashlight over one section.

Then stopped.

Her pulse quickened.

Because she recognized a name.

Samuel Brooks.

Carved into the stone.

Below it sat another message.

One sentence.

Five chilling words.

The chamber must be opened.

The air seemed colder.

Much colder.

Because suddenly Samuel Brooks felt real.

Not a ghost.

Not a story.

A man.

A dangerous man.

A determined man.

A man obsessed with whatever lay ahead.

---

The tunnel continued for nearly thirty minutes.

Twists.

Turns.

Old support beams.

Rusting metal doors.

The deeper they went, the stranger everything became.

Eventually they reached a massive steel gate.

Everyone stopped.

The structure looked enormous.

Industrial.

Unlike anything they'd seen so far.

The words painted across it had faded with age.

Yet remained readable.

Barely.

Madison's stomach dropped.

The sign read:

VAULT ZERO

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Because after months of searching...

After decades of secrets...

They had finally found it.

---

Nobody moved immediately.

Nobody wanted to.

The gate felt wrong somehow.

Like standing before a sleeping monster.

Eleanor looked terrified.

Actually terrified.

More afraid than during the explosions.

More afraid than during the threats.

More afraid than at any point since she'd appeared.

Madison noticed immediately.

"You've been here before."

The older woman froze.

Silence.

Then—

"Yes."

The confession echoed through the corridor.

Everyone stared.

Because that changed everything.

Ethan stepped forward.

"When?"

Eleanor swallowed.

Then answered.

"Forty years ago."

Nobody spoke.

Nobody could.

Forty years.

Before the fire.

Before the Trust collapsed.

Before Charles vanished.

Before everything.

Eleanor looked toward the gate.

Pain filled her eyes.

Regret.

Fear.

Guilt.

"So much death started here."

The words sent chills through everyone.

---

Then Sheriff Brooks noticed something.

A keypad.

Modern.

Recently installed.

The device looked completely out of place.

Ancient vault.

Modern technology.

Which meant only one thing.

Someone was still using it.

Recently.

Very recently.

Noah crouched beside it.

Examining wires.

Connections.

The screen.

Then he froze.

"What?"

Noah slowly looked up.

His face had gone pale.

Actually pale.

"Ethan."

His voice barely worked.

"What?"

Noah pointed toward the keypad.

The display showed a message.

Simple.

Short.

Terrifying.

WELCOME BACK, MADISON.

The corridor became deathly silent.

Because there was only one way that message could appear.

Someone knew they were coming.

Someone had been watching.

The entire time.

Then a speaker hidden somewhere inside the vault crackled to life.

Static filled the corridor.

Followed by a voice.

An old voice.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

Madison's blood ran cold.

Because she'd heard it before.

Only once.

On the phone.

The voice spoke softly.

Almost warmly.

"Hello, Madison."

Silence.

The voice continued.

"You finally made it."

Madison's heart stopped.

Because if the voice belonged to Charles Whitmore...

Then one impossible truth remained.

He wasn't running from the Trust.

He was already inside Vault Zero.
