Chapter 40 - Valthor Awakens

The golden eyes stared through the Gateway.

Unblinking.

Ancient.

Endless.

Madison felt her blood run cold.

Because the eyes weren't merely looking in her direction.

They were looking directly at her.

Through the distance.

Through worlds.

Through time itself.

As though the creature had always known she would stand here.

At this exact moment.

In this exact place.

---

Nobody spoke.

Nobody could.

The pressure alone was overwhelming.

A crushing weight settled over the Core Chamber.

Hard to breathe.

Hard to think.

Hard to move.

---

Even Aethel looked shaken.

The ancient custodian.

The immortal guardian.

The man who had survived centuries.

Looked terrified.

---

"No."

His whisper barely carried across the room.

"No..."

---

The shadow beyond the Gateway continued rising.

Higher.

Higher.

Higher.

Until mountains seemed small beside it.

Until clouds wrapped around its body.

Until the stars themselves disappeared behind its form.

---

Noah swallowed hard.

---

"That's not a Titan."

---

Aethel slowly shook his head.

---

"No."

---

The answer somehow made things worse.

Much worse.

---

Then the Gateway pulsed.

Silver light exploded across the chamber.

Symbols illuminated.

Ancient mechanisms activated.

Systems dormant for centuries awakened.

---

And a new message appeared across every monitor in Vault Zero.

---

PRIMORDIAL ENTITY DETECTED

---

Silence.

---

DESIGNATION: VALTHOR

---

More silence.

---

THREAT LEVEL: EXTINCTION

---

Nobody breathed.

---

Because there was no misunderstanding that word.

---

Extinction.

---

Not danger.

Not crisis.

Not disaster.

---

Extinction.

---

The end.

---

Of everything.

---

Ethan stepped closer to Madison.

Instinctively.

Protectively.

---

His hand found hers.

---

And despite everything happening...

Despite cosmic horrors.

Despite ancient gateways.

Despite worlds colliding.

---

Madison squeezed back.

---

Because some things still mattered.

---

Some things always would.

---

Then Valthor moved.

---

A single movement.

Nothing more.

---

Yet the consequences were immediate.

---

The alien world beyond the Gateway shook violently.

Mountains collapsed.

Storms erupted.

Entire regions vanished beneath waves of energy.

---

Like reality itself bent around the creature.

---

Like existence struggled to contain it.

---

Aethel closed his eyes.

---

"It's beginning again."

---

Madison looked toward him.

---

"What is?"

---

The ancient custodian's expression became distant.

Filled with memories.

Terrible memories.

---

"The Last Fall."

---

Silence.

---

The words carried weight.

History.

Pain.

---

Charles immediately understood.

---

His face went pale.

---

"No."

---

Aethel nodded sadly.

---

"Yes."

---

The room remained silent.

---

Then Madison asked the obvious question.

---

"What is the Last Fall?"

---

The answer came quietly.

---

"The end of the First World."

---

Nobody moved.

---

Because that sentence changed everything.

---

The First World.

---

Not the first kingdom.

Not the first civilization.

---

The First World.

---

A whole world.

---

Gone.

---

Destroyed.

---

And judging by Aethel's expression...

Valthor had been responsible.

---

Then suddenly—

A memory flooded Madison's mind.

---

Not her memory.

---

Someone else's.

---

Images exploded behind her eyes.

---

Ancient cities.

Silver towers.

Flying ships.

Golden rivers.

---

A civilization far beyond Earth.

---

The world beyond the Gateway.

---

Alive.

Beautiful.

Magnificent.

---

Then fire.

---

Screaming.

---

War.

---

Darkness.

---

And in the sky...

Valthor.

---

Destroying everything.

---

Madison gasped.

Stumbling backward.

---

The vision vanished instantly.

---

Ethan caught her before she could fall.

---

"Madison!"

---

She looked at him.

Breathing hard.

Shaking.

---

"I saw it."

---

Nobody needed clarification.

---

The Gateway had shown her.

---

A memory.

---

A warning.

---

Or both.

---

Then the silver pathway extending into the portal brightened.

---

Aethel turned toward it.

---

Slowly.

---

Respectfully.

---

Like a knight before a throne.

---

Then he looked at Madison.

---

"The Covenant is calling."

---

The words echoed through the chamber.

---

"The choice has returned."

---

Madison stared at the pathway.

---

The path leading into another world.

---

Toward the silver city.

---

Toward answers.

---

Toward danger.

---

Toward destiny.

---

And somewhere beyond...

Valthor waited.

---

Watching.

---

Expecting.

---

Then a final message appeared above the Gateway.

---

Ancient symbols.

Unknown language.

---

Yet somehow Madison understood every word.

---

HEIR OF THE FIRST WALKER

THE COVENANT REQUESTS YOUR PRESENCE

THE FATE OF TWO WORLDS AWAITS

---

The portal widened.

The silver city shone brighter.

And for the first time...

Madison realized the truth.

The mystery of Magnolia Creek was over.

The war for two worlds was about to begin.

To be continued...
