Chapter 44 - The Last Walker

"The Last Walker."

The name echoed across the plaza.

Like a curse.

Like a prophecy.

Like a forgotten nightmare returning to life.

---

Madison stared at the figure beyond the city walls.

The man stood beside Valthor without fear.

Without hesitation.

Without doubt.

---

Black armor covered his body.

Ancient runes glowed across its surface.

A silver sword rested in his hand.

And around his neck hung the symbol of the First Traveler.

The same symbol carried by Aldric Walker.

The same symbol connected to Madison's bloodline.

---

Yet everything about him felt wrong.

Twisted.

Corrupted.

---

Like a reflection in broken glass.

---

"No."

Madison shook her head.

"That's impossible."

---

Aethel's expression darkened.

---

"I wish it was."

---

The ancient custodian slowly stepped forward.

His eyes locked onto the distant warrior.

---

"I watched him die."

---

Silence.

---

Everyone turned toward Aethel.

---

Because those words changed everything.

---

"You knew him?"

Queen Elyria asked quietly.

---

Aethel nodded.

---

"Very well."

---

The answer carried centuries of pain.

---

Then he spoke the name.

---

"Kael Walker."

---

The city seemed to grow colder.

---

Because even the soldiers reacted.

Even the commanders.

Even the Queen.

---

They knew that name.

---

And none of them looked happy.

---

Madison frowned.

---

"Who was he?"

---

Aethel closed his eyes.

---

Then answered.

---

"The greatest hero the Covenant ever produced."

---

Silence.

---

Nobody expected that.

---

Especially not Madison.

---

The greatest hero?

---

The man standing beside Valthor?

---

The man leading Titans against the city?

---

Impossible.

---

Yet Aethel wasn't joking.

---

His voice contained nothing but sorrow.

---

"Three hundred years ago..."

---

The battlefield seemed to fade away as he spoke.

---

"Kael Walker saved this world."

---

Ancient memories appeared above the plaza.

A magical projection.

A living record.

---

A younger Kael appeared.

---

Silver armor.

Silver sword.

Bright eyes.

---

A hero.

---

A genuine hero.

---

Citizens cheered his name.

Children waved banners.

Kings bowed before him.

---

The entire world loved him.

---

Madison stared.

---

Because she could see it.

---

The courage.

The determination.

The goodness.

---

Kael had once been exactly what everyone believed a hero should be.

---

Then the vision changed.

---

War.

---

Death.

---

Fire.

---

Titans.

---

Endless battle.

---

Years of fighting.

---

Years of sacrifice.

---

Years of loss.

---

One by one...

The people Kael loved died.

---

Friends.

Family.

Comrades.

---

Everyone.

---

The war never ended.

---

The suffering never stopped.

---

The victories never lasted.

---

Madison felt her chest tighten.

---

Because she could see what happened.

---

The same thing that breaks many heroes.

---

Hopelessness.

---

Then the vision showed Valthor.

---

Not as a monster.

---

As a king.

---

A powerful ruler.

A brilliant leader.

A manipulator.

---

Standing before Kael.

Offering peace.

Offering answers.

Offering salvation.

---

Offering exactly what a broken hero wanted to hear.

---

The projection faded.

---

Silence returned.

---

And now everyone understood.

---

Kael hadn't been defeated.

---

He'd been convinced.

---

Corrupted.

---

Converted.

---

The Last Walker lowered his sword.

---

His voice crossed the battlefield.

---

"I offered this city mercy."

---

Nobody moved.

---

Nobody spoke.

---

Because despite everything...

His voice wasn't cruel.

---

It was sad.

---

Almost compassionate.

---

Which somehow made him more frightening.

---

"Eight centuries of war."

Kael continued.

---

"Eight centuries of death."

---

The Titans behind him stood motionless.

Listening.

Waiting.

---

"The Covenant failed."

---

His golden eyes shifted toward Madison.

---

Then softened slightly.

---

"You don't understand yet."

---

The statement wasn't an insult.

---

It sounded like regret.

---

Like pity.

---

Which was somehow worse.

---

Then Kael pointed toward the Gateway visible above the city.

---

"The First Walker made a mistake."

---

Silence.

---

"The choice was wrong."

---

Queen Elyria stepped forward immediately.

---

"Enough."

---

The Queen's voice carried royal authority.

---

Absolute certainty.

---

"Your lies ended centuries ago."

---

Kael laughed softly.

---

"No."

---

His gaze moved across the city.

---

Across the walls.

---

Across the defenders.

---

Across Madison.

---

Then he said the words that made everyone's blood run cold.

---

"The lies are what built this city."

---

Silence.

---

Absolute silence.

---

Because for the first time...

Queen Elyria looked shaken.

---

Aethel looked shaken.

---

The Covenant leaders looked shaken.

---

As though Kael had touched a dangerous truth.

---

A truth nobody wanted discussed.

---

Madison noticed immediately.

---

And so did Kael.

---

The Last Walker smiled.

---

Then looked directly at her.

---

"The Covenant never told you why Aldric closed the Gate."

---

Nobody spoke.

---

Nobody interrupted.

---

Because suddenly...

Everyone wanted the answer.

---

Kael's smile faded.

---

And his voice became deadly serious.

---

"Ask them what Earth really is."

---

The battlefield fell silent.

---

Then Valthor's massive golden eyes opened wider.

---

The sky darkened.

---

And far above Covenant City...

Another Gateway began forming.

---

Larger than the first.

---

Much larger.

---

Something enormous was about to arrive.

---

And Madison had a terrible feeling that Kael Walker wasn't the real enemy.

---

To be continued...
