Chapter 10 - Chapter 47: Five

The demon disciples were not subtle.

Five of them, in a loose encirclement formation around eleven young cultivators who had clearly been navigating together until they'd been found, and who were now backed against a massive old tree with the specific energy of people who had understood the situation about two minutes ago and had been losing steadily since. The demon disciples had abandoned the human disguise at some point — the black scales visible through torn cultivation robes, the eyes wrong, the movement patterns the deliberate economy of things that had been trained to fight rather than trained to cultivate.

They hit the formation's resistance and pushed through it with brute force, which was working but costing them. One of them was visibly slower than the other four.

Xiao Yan assessed in three seconds.

Five targets. Celestial Stage bottom range. The formation working against them. Eleven civilians in moderate condition. Cover from the tree. Smoke above, thinning the mist, giving the demons better visibility than their opponents.

"Shuya," he said. "The smoke — can you disrupt the column?"

She looked up. "Ocean Codex Heart works with atmospheric moisture. The smoke is drawing the mist upward through convection — if I reverse the moisture flow, the mist thickens instead of thinning." A pause. "Thirty seconds to set up."

"Set it up." He looked at Lieya and Jinyao. "On my move."

[Master — the one on the far left. He's different from the others. The cultivation signature is compressed, similar to the observation group from the outer approach.]

"Another observer?"

[No. A coordinator. He's maintaining the encirclement pattern and feeding the others directional information. Break him first and the group loses cohesion.]

"How confident are you."

[Confident. The pattern matches the tactical formation She Mu described. He's running command function, not combat function.]

Xiao Yan filed it. Looked at the far-left figure.

"Shuya, go."

She moved sideways, threading through the mist toward a position where the atmospheric formation would give her the leverage point. Silent, deliberate rather than fast.

Twenty seconds.

The coordinator's information pulses were visible through the Codex Eye — subtle, directional data moving between him and the other four, invisible to standard cultivation sense. Xiao Yan tracked the pattern. Filed the rhythm.

[Fifteen seconds.]

The smoke above began to shift. Shuya's moisture redirection hitting the convection current, the mist thickening at the column's base faster than the demons' heat could clear it. The coordinator noticed — a fractional pause in the information pulse, the first moment of uncertainty.

Xiao Yan moved in that pause.

He crossed the distance faster than the coordinator had budgeted for — the Thunder Veins compressing the approach, the Codex Eye targeting the specific gap in the coordinator's formation sense that the mist disruption had opened. He hit the coordinator with an open-palm Thunder Vein discharge targeted at the cultivation channels rather than the body — the Soul Path component reading the exact meridian map and disrupting the coordination function specifically.

The coordinator went down hard.

The other four lost cohesion immediately — the encirclement fractured, the directional information cutting out, each of them running on individual assessment rather than coordinated data.

"Lieya," he said.

She was already moving. The War God Heart at full output, the Twin Flame-Thunder Gauntlets hitting the two nearest simultaneously, the explosive force sending them backward into the formation resistance that the mountain had been building against them — and the resistance, which had been slowing them, now became a wall they hit at speed.

Jinyao took the fourth with a golden suppression technique placed not on the demon but on the ground beneath it — the formation activated from below, the cultivation drain hitting a Celestial Stage target already running expensive against the mountain's resistance. The fourth dropped to one knee.

The fifth turned to run.

Tang Shuya was behind it. The fan was open. The moisture she'd redirected for the smoke disruption had a second application she hadn't mentioned — concentrated at the contact surface, it hit a cultivation body at exactly the wrong temperature differential. The fifth demon stopped running because its feet had stopped being available.

Four seconds. Five targets. The coordinator already down.

The eleven cultivators against the tree were very still.

Xiao Yan looked at them. Young — the youngest cohort the mountain allowed, some of them. Two were injured. All of them were looking at him with the expression of people who had spent the last several minutes certain they were going to die and were still updating their understanding of the current situation.

"Can you move?" he said.

"Yes," the one in front said, pulling himself together faster than the others — the group's natural leader, whoever he was.

"East from here, three hundred meters. There's a stream. Follow it north and it takes you out of the demon formation zone — the water disrupts their tracking technique." He turned. "We're not stopping here. Move when you're ready."

"Who are you?" the leader said.

Xiao Yan looked back at him.

"Nobody important," he said. "Move fast."

He walked back into the mist.

Behind him, he heard the eleven begin to move.

[Good,] Michael said.

"Don't."

[I was going to say the coordinator had a message on him. Coded, but readable if you have the right context.]

"And?"

[She Mu's insertion plan has a secondary objective. Beyond eliminating the young generation.]

Xiao Yan kept walking, the Dragon's Heart somewhere above them, the smoke thinning now that Shuya's formation had broken the column.

[The Dragon's Heart. They're trying to reach it before you do. She Mu specifically wants the Azure Dragon's soul disrupted before you can form the pact.]

The mist moved around them. Lieya and Jinyao fell into step on either side. Tang Shuya at his back.

"Then we stop being careful," he said, "and start being fast."

He ignited the Thunder Veins and moved.
