Chapter 133 - 133

Chapter 133: Lines in Motion

Morning arrived with a thin rain that stitched the streets together. Ava walked faster than usual, coat collar up, thoughts moving even quicker. Declining the offer had brought relief, but it also stripped away excuses. Staying meant choosing daily effort.

At the café near her office, Leo waited by the window. He stood when he saw her, not from habit, but intention. They ordered coffee and sat.

"I don't want us to drift back into comfort," Ava said. "Comfort hides things."

Leo nodded. "Then let's make rules."

"Boundaries," she corrected. "Clear ones."

They wrote them down on a napkin. No disappearing. No half truths. Time apart without punishment. Check ins when silence felt heavy. It felt formal and strangely intimate.

Work pulled them in opposite directions that week. Ava led a tense presentation and earned quiet respect. Leo missed a deadline and owned it without excuses. They texted less, but better. Fewer words. More meaning.

On Thursday night, an argument sparked over nothing. A missed call. A tired tone. The old heat rose fast. Ava felt the familiar urge to withdraw.

"Pause," Leo said, lifting his hands. "I'm not leaving. I'm just exhausted."

The moment cracked open. Ava exhaled. "I'm scared of being taken for granted," she admitted.

He stepped closer. "Tell me when it starts. I can't fix what I can't see."

They sat on the floor, backs against the couch, letting the anger cool into understanding. It wasn't resolution. It was restraint.

Saturday came with sunlight. They walked the park, fingers brushing, not quite intertwined. A child raced past them, laughing, and Ava smiled despite herself.

"Are we moving forward?" she asked.

"Yes," Leo said. "But not in a straight line."

That night, Ava opened her journal and wrote one sentence she underlined twice: Trust moves when both people keep walking.

She closed the book, feeling steadier. Not certain. Steadier.
