Chapter 16 - A Future She Didn't see Coming

"Mommy." Scorpius pulled on her pant leg with his tiny hand. Hermione looked down to find her five-year-old looking up at her with sleep-filled eyes.

Hermione ruffled her son's hair. "Are you tired, sweetie?" Scorpius nodded. She stopped doing the dishes and picked up Scorpius. Hermione carried the sleepy child up to his room. His small head nodded along with every step she took, and his eyelids fluttered, growing heavier with every second that passed.

Normally, Scorpius would need to be read a bedtime story before he could even fall asleep, but this time, he was fast asleep before his head hit the pillow.

Hermione chuckled softly before leaning down to place a kiss on his forehead. "I love you, my little angel." She then left the bedroom, closing the door as gently as possible, but not before casting a quick spell so the Scorpius could have a light in case he were to wake up in the middle of the night.

Back in the kitchen, she found Draco and their oldest, Rose, finishing up the dishes. Rose's hair, so much like her own, was frazzled and sticking up all over the place as she rubbed the wet dishes dry with a towel.

Draco saw Hermione and walked over to her. "One down, two to go." He winked at her. She giggled as he wrapped his arms around her neck.

Hermione stood up on her tiptoes and gave him a peck on the lips. The motion was quick and anything but sensual since their daughter was present, but it still made her heart feel all light and fluttery.

"Eww, I don't want to see that. Go in another room," teased Rose.

Hermione leaned back with a smile. She loved the life that she had and would never change it even if it was one she never saw coming. And it really wasn't something she saw coming.

Two years ago, Draco had just lost Astoria, leaving him and Scorpius all alone. When Hermione found out, she tried to be there to help him through it. She would silently offer him support, volunteer to watch Scorpius, and pull the bottle away from Draco when needed.

Not long after that, right around the time that Draco was finally able to cope with his wife's death, Hermione discovered that Ron was having an affair. When she had confronted Ron about it, he brought up the issue of divorce, something unheard of among wizards. Hermione agreed and, with his consent, took full custody of their two children.

Draco was there to help her through it, giving a shoulder to lean on, and even offered to watch the children when work randomly called her in or when she just needed alone time to cry.

They had both helped each other even if it were unfamiliar territory for them, and somewhere along the way of awkwarness and unexplored territory, she had fallen in love with the big, blonde, sarcastic idiot. And he with her.

"Shall we take this in another room as our darling daughter suggests?" Draco wriggled his eyebrows, causing her to giggle again.

"Maybe we should wait till all the little ones are tucked away."

"Aww, you're never any fun," whined Draco teasingly, that sometimes infuriatingsmirk never leaving his lips. His smirk growing wider was the only warning she had before he pinched her arm.

"You knew that when you agreed to marry me." Hermione kissed him again on the lips. This one was longer and deeper than the peck she had given him earlier.

No complaints of disgust ringed out. Rose must have left to find Hugo to take him to bed.

Draco looked around the room. "We're the only ones here," he said, confirming her earlier thought. The hands on her hips gripped her tighter before lifting her up and placing her bum on the counter. He placed a heavy, drug inducing kiss on her lips before she could argue. All thoughts of their kids flew from her mind when Draco trailed nibbling bites down her neck. There was a good chance that their children may gain a sibling in the near future.
