What Howard Left Behind
The boxes arrived quietly.
No fanfare.
No explanation.
Tony stared at them for a long moment.
"…I was about to sue SHIELD," he muttered.
"But I'll let it go. For now."
Veronica didn't argue.
They opened the files together.
Documents.
Blueprints.
Old recordings.
One video played.
Howard Stark appeared—older, tired, but smiling.
"My greatest invention… is you."
Tony froze.
Veronica covered her mouth.
Howard's eyes softened as he spoke their names—Tony. Veronica.
Pride.
Love.
Regret.
When the video ended, neither of them spoke for a long time.
The Locked Message
Another file appeared.
Access Required: Dual Biometric Authorization.
Tony frowned. "Figures."
Both of them placed their hands on the scanner.
Eye scan.
The screen flickered.
The video began.
Alex had already turned to leave the room—
Then he heard the voice.
Howard Stark.
A Message Not Meant for Him
(But Found Him Anyway)
"Tony. Veronica.
You may already know that House Ashborn holds shares in Stark Group."
Alex stopped.
"But what you don't know…
is that my first true friend…
one of my best and oldest friends…
was Alexander Ashborn."
Alex's breath caught.
"By the time you hear this, I may be gone.
I understand why you didn't involve yourself with the Super Soldier program, Alex."
Howard's expression hardened slightly.
"I saw the true faces of politicians. Businessmen.
I couldn't turn back anymore."
Alex closed his eyes.
"Alex…
I know you might regret not protecting me."
Howard smiled gently.
"Please don't be sad about my death."
Tony and Veronica glanced at each other—confused, stunned.
"Please protect my children.
Tony. Veronica."
Alex's hands clenched slowly.
"You'll probably become friends with Tony someday.
He's as much a genius as I was… maybe more."
Howard's voice softened.
"I'm proud of my children.
And Alex…"
The screen paused for a heartbeat.
"Thank you. For everything."
The video ended.
Aftermath
Alex stood there silently.
For a moment—
He looked older.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
He turned and left the room without a word.
Realization
Tony stared at the dark screen.
"…He knew Dad."
Veronica whispered, "…Dad trusted him."
Everything clicked.
The protection.
The timing.
The way Alex always knew.
They exchanged a look.
Alex wasn't just their friend.
He was part of their past.
A Promise, Delayed
Later, Alex paused at the doorway.
"I'll tell you everything," he said quietly.
"After this mess is over."
Tony nodded.
Veronica nodded too.
They trusted him.
Now more than ever.
Alex walked away.
And somewhere deep within—
A memory of an old friend lingered.
Unbroken.
