Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 16

THE HEART BENEATH THE ISLAND

The staircase descended into darkness.

Endless darkness.

Ancient darkness.

The kind that existed long before kingdoms were built.

The kind that remembered everything.

---

Nobody spoke as they descended.

The air grew colder with every step.

The walls surrounding them were carved from black stone unlike anything they had seen before.

Not the silver stone of Aurelia.

Not the golden stone of the sanctuaries.

Something older.

Much older.

---

The symbols glowing along the staircase seemed different as well.

More complicated.

More ancient.

Almost impossible to understand.

---

Eva studied them carefully.

Even the compass didn't recognize them.

The needle spun uncertainly.

As though it had never encountered this language before.

---

"These aren't Aurelian symbols."

Eva whispered.

---

Elias immediately stopped walking.

---

"What?"

---

Eva pointed toward the walls.

---

"The language is different."

---

Lyra examined the carvings.

For the first time since awakening from the crystal, she looked genuinely surprised.

---

"She's right."

---

Silence followed.

---

If the symbols weren't from Aurelia—

Then who created them?

---

The question lingered as they continued downward.

---

Nearly twenty minutes later the staircase finally ended.

---

And everyone froze.

---

The chamber before them was enormous.

Larger than Black Hollow.

Larger than the Mountain Sanctuary.

Larger than anything they had encountered so far.

---

A massive underground city stretched before them.

---

Ruined.

Abandoned.

Silent.

---

Yet unmistakably a city.

---

Broken towers rose from the darkness.

Ancient bridges crossed deep chasms.

Collapsed buildings covered the landscape.

---

The heirs stared in disbelief.

---

"This isn't Aurelia."

Parna whispered.

---

"No."

Lyra agreed.

---

"It isn't."

---

The discovery changed everything.

---

For the first time, they had found evidence of another civilization connected to the mystery.

---

One that existed before Aurelia.

---

Suddenly Riva experienced another vision.

---

A city shining beneath the earth.

Filled with people.

Filled with life.

Filled with strange symbols.

---

Then came darkness.

Fire.

Collapse.

Destruction.

---

The vision ended.

---

Riva stumbled backward.

---

The city had fallen long before Aurelia existed.

---

And somehow—

Someone had intentionally hidden it.

---

The group moved cautiously through the ruins.

---

Hours passed.

---

They discovered ancient statues unlike anything they had seen before.

Tall figures wearing masks.

Their faces hidden.

Their identities erased.

---

Every statue pointed toward the center of the underground city.

---

Just as the island statues had.

---

Something important waited there.

---

Something everyone feared.

---

Finally they reached the center.

---

And stopped.

---

A massive circular structure stood before them.

---

A temple.

---

Its black stone surface remained untouched by time.

Unlike the surrounding ruins.

Unlike everything else.

---

As though it had been protected.

---

Waiting.

---

The compass immediately pointed toward it.

---

The box began glowing.

---

The four symbols representing the heirs appeared above the entrance.

Silver.

Green.

Blue.

Gold.

---

The temple recognized them.

---

A low rumble echoed through the underground city.

---

The giant doors slowly opened.

---

Darkness waited beyond.

---

The heirs exchanged nervous glances.

---

Then entered.

---

The interior looked surprisingly untouched.

Ancient torches suddenly ignited.

One after another.

---

Revealing a circular hall.

---

At its center stood a pedestal.

---

And resting upon the pedestal—

A crystal sphere.

---

The moment the heirs saw it, every symbol in the temple illuminated.

---

The sphere awakened.

---

Golden light filled the chamber.

---

Then a voice echoed through the hall.

---

"Identity confirmed."

---

Everyone froze.

---

The voice sounded human.

Yet strangely mechanical.

---

"Four heirs detected."

---

The sphere brightened.

---

"Memory archive activated."

---

Before anyone could react—

A massive projection appeared above them.

---

A star map.

---

Thousands of glowing points filled the darkness.

---

Entire continents.

Entire oceans.

Entire civilizations.

---

The heirs stared in amazement.

---

Then they noticed something.

---

Aurelia wasn't the center of the map.

---

It was merely one kingdom among many.

---

A realization struck them.

---

The world was far larger than they imagined.

---

Far older than they imagined.

---

And Aurelia was only one piece of a much bigger story.

---

Suddenly another image appeared.

---

A figure wearing a silver mask.

---

The image flickered repeatedly.

Damaged by time.

---

The voice continued.

---

"Archive corrupted."

---

The masked figure briefly pointed toward something.

---

A location.

---

A distant region marked by a strange star-shaped symbol.

---

Then the projection vanished.

---

The sphere cracked.

---

Silence returned.

---

"What was that?"

Aarvi whispered.

---

Nobody knew.

---

Even Elias looked confused.

---

That worried everyone.

---

Because Elias usually had answers.

---

This time he had none.

---

Then a sound echoed through the temple.

---

Footsteps.

---

Slow.

Deliberate.

---

Everyone turned.

---

A shadow stood near the entrance.

---

For a brief moment they feared Kael.

---

But it wasn't him.

---

This figure was different.

---

Smaller.

---

Wearing a black cloak.

---

Its face hidden.

---

The stranger stared directly at the heirs.

---

Then at the cracked sphere.

---

As though disappointed.

---

Without saying a word, the figure turned and ran.

---

"What was that?"

Parna shouted.

---

Nobody knew.

---

Riva immediately chased after the stranger.

The others followed.

---

They emerged from the temple and raced through the underground city.

---

The mysterious figure moved quickly.

Too quickly.

Almost as if they knew the ruins perfectly.

---

Finally the stranger reached a collapsed bridge.

---

Stopped.

---

And turned.

---

For a brief second, lightning-like blue energy illuminated their face.

---

A young girl.

Perhaps seventeen years old.

---

Not much older than the heirs.

---

Her eyes widened.

---

As though she recognized them.

---

Then the bridge collapsed.

---

The stranger disappeared into the darkness below.

---

Gone.

---

The heirs rushed forward.

---

But there was no sign of her.

---

Nothing.

---

Only silence.

---

And a single object left behind.

---

A silver pendant.

---

Ancient.

Beautiful.

---

Covered with the same star-shaped symbol from the projection.

---

Riva picked it up.

---

The pendant immediately began glowing.

---

A new clue.

A new mystery.

A new destination.

---

And somewhere far away, Kael slowly smiled.

---

The heirs had finally discovered the hidden city.

Exactly as he expected.

---

But they had also found something he had spent years searching for.

---

The star symbol.

---

The symbol connected to a secret even older than Aurelia.

---

A secret that could change everything.

---

And for the first time in fifty years—

Kael was no longer the only one searching for it.
