Chapter 41 - The Second Prison

The ground shook again. Not a single violent jolt, but a rolling pressure that moved beneath the square like something vast turning in its sleep.Stone groaned.Cracks stretched outward from the fissure in thin, branching lines, splitting the once-solid circle into fragile segments. Dust fell in soft streams, catching the dim light of swaying lanterns. No one spoke. The silence was no longer calm.It was waiting.Nyxara's grip on Aerys's arm tightened."You felt that.""Yes.""That wasn't the same as before.""No."Another impact came from below.Boom.This one carried weight. Intention. The sound didn't echo.It pushed.Several people at the edge of the square stumbled backward. A soldier dropped his weapon, the metal clattering sharply against stone. The voice from the darkness spoke again, quieter now."That is… closer than I expected."Aerys frowned."You sound like this wasn't part of your plan.""It wasn't."Nyxara didn't hide her disbelief."You expect us to believe you didn't know something like that was down there?""I knew something else was contained," the voice replied calmly. "I did not expect it to wake this soon."Another tremor.Longer.Heavier.The fissure widened a fraction more.Cold air surged upward again, carrying with it something deeper than temperature.Aerys felt it immediately.A pressure that did not belong to the system he had begun to understand.Nyxara watched his expression change."What is it?""That's not the same energy."The voice confirmed it."No."The Nullifier stepped forward, his usual calm stripped down to something raw and uncertain."Then what is it?"Silence.Even the voice took a moment this time. When it spoke again, there was something different in it.Not fear. But recognition."The second prison," it said slowly, "was never meant to fail first."Nyxara crossed her arms tightly."That is not an answer.""It is the most important one."Aerys stepped closer to the fissure again.Nyxara didn't stop him this time.Because she knew.Whatever was happening—distance would not protect them."How many layers are there?" Aerys asked."Two," the voice answered."And the first was instinct.""Yes.""And the second?"A pause. Then—"Containment of force."Aerys tilted his head."Force of what?"Another impact roared upward.Boom.This time the ground visibly shifted.A section of the stone circle cracked and dropped slightly, tilting inward toward the fissure.People screamed. The soldiers shouted for everyone to move back again, but the command carried less authority now. There was no instinct reinforcing obedience.Only fear. And fear scattered.Nyxara steadied herself."You're avoiding the question.""Yes.""Why?""Because the answer will not help you."Aerys disagreed."Try us."The voice exhaled softly."It is not something that can be negotiated with."Nyxara's eyes sharpened."Neither were you.""That is incorrect."Aerys spoke quietly."You can be reasoned with.""Yes.""And it cannot."A long silence.Then—"No."Another tremor.Stronger.The fissure widened again with a sharp crack, the edges crumbling further. The darkness below seemed to shift violently.Aerys felt the reaction inside his chest again.Stronger now.More urgent.Nyxara stepped in front of him slightly."You're reacting.""I know.""That thing is affecting you.""Yes."The voice spoke again."The system is destabilizing faster now."Aerys nodded."Because of it.""Yes."Nyxara looked between them."So we have two problems.""Correct.""One of them is willing to talk.""Yes.""And the other one—"Another impact interrupted her. This one was closer.Much closer. The sound came with a deep, grinding shift beneath the stone. The fissure expanded suddenly.A large section of the circle collapsed inward, disappearing into the darkness.Cold air roared upward violently now.People screamed again and retreated further. The square was no longer stable.Aerys stepped back this time. Not out of fear.Out of calculation."The second one is moving," he said."Yes."The voice did not deny it anymore.Nyxara's voice dropped."How long do we have?"A pause. Then—"Not long enough."Aerys exhaled slowly."That is not useful.""It is accurate."The Nullifier stepped closer again, his expression pale but focused."If instinct was holding both of you…""Yes.""And instinct is gone…""Yes.""Then both prisons are failing.""Yes."Nyxara finished the thought."But one is failing faster.""Yes."Another impact.Closer again. The darkness in the fissure churned now, not empty anymore.Moving.Aerys stared into it."What does it want?"The voice answered without hesitation."Release.""And you?""Balance."Nyxara scoffed."That is a convenient difference.""It is a fundamental one."Another tremor rippled upward.Aerys felt the energy surge inside him again.Stronger than before. He clenched his fists.Nyxara noticed immediately."Aerys.""It's building.""How much?""I don't know."The voice answered for him."Too much."Aerys glanced downward again."If I stabilize the system…""Yes.""I contain both of you.""Yes.""And if I fail?"The voice did not hesitate."Then neither of us will remain contained."Nyxara's voice hardened."And the city?"The answer came simply."Gone."Silence.Heavy.Absolute.Another impact shook the ground. This time something new followed it.A sound. Not stone. Not energy.A low, distorted vibration that felt almost like—A breath.Nyxara froze."You heard that."Aerys nodded slowly."Yes."The voice spoke again."That is new."Aerys didn't like that."You keep saying that.""Because it is."Nyxara stared into the fissure."It's aware.""Yes."Another sound rose from the depths.Longer this time. Not quite a voice. But closer than before.Aerys felt the energy inside him spike violently in response. He staggered half a step.Nyxara caught him."Aerys!""I'm fine.""No, you're not."The voice spoke again."The connection is strengthening."Aerys exhaled sharply."It's not just reacting.""No.""It's reaching.""Yes."Nyxara looked sharply at the darkness."Reaching for what?"The answer came slowly."For you."Aerys's expression hardened."That's not happening.""You misunderstand," the voice said calmly."It already is."Another violent tremor split through the square. The fissure expanded again, now wide enough to swallow entire sections of stone. The ground tilted.People screamed and fled at last, retreating into the surrounding streets. The soldiers followed, formation breaking completely.Only a few remained.Aerys.Nyxara.The Nullifier. And the edge of something ancient.Another sound rose from below.Clearer now.Closer.This time—It almost formed a word.Nyxara stepped back slightly."That's not just energy.""No," Aerys said."It's not."The voice below spoke again.Quieter.Measured."Now you understand."Aerys didn't look away."You said it wants extinction.""Yes.""Why?"A long pause. Then—"Because it was designed for it."Nyxara's breath caught."Designed?""Yes.""By who?"The answer came slowly."The same ones who built me."The realization hit all at once. The gods.Aerys's voice dropped."They made a failsafe.""Yes.""A weapon.""Yes."Nyxara finished it."In case control failed.""Yes."Another sound rose from the depths. This time unmistakable.A voice.Broken.Distorted.But forming.Aerys felt the energy inside him surge violently again. He dropped to one knee.Nyxara knelt beside him instantly."Aerys!""It's—"He clenched his teeth."It's pulling."The voice below spoke urgently now."You must stabilize the system."Aerys shook his head."I don't know how.""Yes, you do.""No, I don't.""Yes."Nyxara grabbed his face, forcing him to focus."Look at me."He did."You've been feeling it since the beginning," she said. "The structure. The pressure. The pattern.""That's not control.""It's understanding."Another violent tremor shook the ground.Closer.Louder.The fissure pulsed. The voice from below spoke again."The second prison is breaking."Aerys forced himself to stand. The energy inside him surged again. This time—He didn't resist it.He let it settle.Align.Shape.The ground beneath his feet responded. Not instinct. Not dominance.Structure.Nyxara felt it immediately."It's different.""Yes."Aerys stepped toward the fissure again.Carefully.Deliberately.The voice below spoke, almost relieved."Good."Aerys ignored it.Instead, he focused inward. On the pressure. On the pattern. On the balance. The ground trembled again—Then—Paused.Just for a moment.Nyxara exhaled."You're doing something.""Maybe."Another sound rose from below.Louder now.Clearer.The second presence was closer.Aware.Watching.Aerys's voice dropped."I can feel both of them."Nyxara's eyes widened."Both?""Yes.""And?"Aerys hesitated."Neither of them is lying."The voice below went silent.Nyxara whispered."That's not comforting.""No."Another tremor.Stronger again. The pause shattered. The fissure expanded violently.Whatever Aerys had done—Was not enough. The voice below spoke again."You cannot hold it alone."Aerys nodded slowly."I know."Nyxara looked at him."Then what?"He turned toward her."For the first time," he said quietly, "we don't choose control.""Then what do we choose?"Aerys looked back into the abyss. The darkness moved. The second presence rising. The first waiting. And the system collapsing between them.He exhaled."We choose what survives."Another massive impact exploded beneath the square. The ground split further. The darkness surged upward. And then—For the first time—A second voice spoke from the abyss.Clear.Cold.And unmistakably aware."Aerys," it said.Nyxara's grip tightened instantly."That thing knows your name."Aerys didn't answer.Because the voice spoke again. And this time—It wasn't asking. It was choosing."Which one of us," it said quietly,"are you going to become?"
