Chapter 18 - What is he going to say?

They didn't talk much on the way back. The city had settled into a late-night calm Cai lang walking with something in mind,Every shadow they passed reminded him of the figure on the rooftop, the way it had lingered, watched, and then disappeared too easily. The sidewalks were nearly empty now,and the glow of streetlights stretched across the pavement in long golden lines.

Suo ran walked between them, his shoulders slightly tense and his hands tucked deep into the sleeves of his hoodie. His gaze stayed lowered most of the time, though every now and then he glanced over his shoulder before quickly looking away.Lian ziho kept scanning their surroundings with unusual seriousness, his hands in his jacket pockets and his normally relaxed expression nowhere to be found.

Once they reached the apartment building, Cai lang stopped beneath the bright lobby lights and turned toward Suo ran."What now?" Suo ran asked, frowning slightly.Cai lang looked directly at him,his dark eyes steady."Stay inside tomorrow."Suo ran immediately frowned deeper. "I can't just.." "Yes,you can!" Cai lang cut in,his voice firm and leaving little room for argument.Lian Ziho raised an eyebrow and looked between them."Wow.Bossy."Cai lang shot him a flat look."Careless.""Overprotective!" Lian ziho corrected without missing a beat.Suo ran sighed heavily and rubbed the bridge of his nose."Both of you stop."

The next day proved Cai Lang right.Suo ran had gone out alone for what was supposed to be a simple trip. The afternoon streets were crowded with office workers, students, and shoppers moving between stores. The smell of food drifted from nearby restaurants and conversations blended into the constant noise of the city.

Everything looked normal until the feeling returned. That crawling awareness at the back of his neck.Someone was there. He noticed footsteps behind him. His pace slowed slightly. The footsteps matched it.Suo ran's stomach tightened. He turned suddenly, and before he could react,a rough hand closed around his wrist."Let go!" he gasped, his heart slamming against his ribs as he tried to pull away.

The stranger's grip only tightened.Suo ran stumbled forward slightly, and panic surged through him. Before it could fully take over,a second hand slammed hard into the attacker's shoulder."Hey!"Lian ziho shouted, grabbing the man and yanking him backward with surprising force. The attacker staggered and nearly lost his balance.

A second later,Cai lang appeared. He stepped between Suo ran and the stranger with frightening calm. His black coat shifted slightly in the wind, and his expression was completely unreadable. One look was enough. The attacker's confidence vanished instantly. He stumbled backward, muttered something unintelligible beneath his breath, and disappeared into the moving crowd without another word.

Suo ran felt the strength leave his legs all at once. His knees weakened, and the world seemed to tilt slightly beneath him. Before he could fall,Caiang caught him.His hand closed around Suo ran's arm, steady and firm."I told you to stay inside."His voice was low.Calm.But his eyes were anything but calm.Dark frustration and fear flickered beneath the surface.Suo ran winced faintly and forced himself upright."I know what I'm doing."

Cai lang let out a quiet disbelieving breath, sharp and edged with restrained anger. His gaze swept over Suo ran from head to toe, checking for injuries before settling on his face."Then what is this?" he demanded, his voice controlled far too tightly."Is this what you call knowing?"Suo ran hesitated. His confidence faltered beneath that stare."I was careful!" he said, but even he could hear the weakness in his own voice.

Cai Lang's jaw tightened visibly."Careful?" he repeated, almost incredulous. His grip shifted slightly on suo ran's arm.Not enough to hurt."You were seconds away from getting yourself killed."Suo ran looked away, and said"I handled it.""You didn't!" Cai lang interrupted immediately. "I did."

Lian ziho crossed his arms and looked between them."Can we argue after he stops shaking?"Cai lang glanced down.Only then did he notice how pale suo ran looked. The color had drained from his face. His fingers trembled slightly where they still clutched Cai lang's sleeve without realizing it.For a moment,Cai lang simply stared. Then his grip softened instantly. The anger disappeared as quickly as it had come."Are you hurt?" he asked quietly.

Suo ran swallowed and shook his head."Just... scared."His voice came out smaller than he intended.Lian ziho let out a long sigh and rubbed the back of his neck."Okay, hero duo, truce.Let's get him home." Cai Lang didn't argue. He simply moved a little closer to suo ran as they started walking again, close enough to catch him if his legs gave out, while Lian Ziho walked on the other side. The crowded street continued around them as though nothing had happened, but all three knew better.

Back at the building, the tension finally eased. Suo ran sat on the couch, wrapped in a blanket Lian ziho had tossed at him,his fingers absently gripping the edge of the fabric. Cai lang stood near the window with his arms folded loosely across his chest, watching the street below."You two are terrible at communication," Lian Ziho said casually, dropping back into the armchair and stretching his legs out in front of him. "One of you orders, the other disappears."

Cai Lang replied flatly, not looking away from the window. "You talk too much." Lian Ziho grinned. "And yet you still showed up."

Lian Ziho's grin slowly faded as he leaned back into the chair, one arm resting across the backrest while he studied Cai Lang more seriously now. "So… can I ask something?" Cai lang didn't turn. "You're already asking." Lian ziho rolled his eyes before glancing at Suo ran first. Suo ran looked up from the couch, confused by the sudden shift in tone. Then Lian ziho looked back at cai lang.

"That night," Lian ziho said slowly, "when all this started… how did you meet him?" Suo ran's breath hitched. Across the room, Cai lang turned around. Lian Ziho continued, voice calm but curious. "I didn't ask then. But after this all happened?" He said, "I think I should know."

Cai Lang looked at suo ran longer than necessary. His expression remained unreadable, but his gaze lingered.Suo ran met his gaze from the couch, uncertain but steady. His grip tightened slightly on the blanket without realizing it. Cai Lang realized this question had been waiting far longer than that rooftop night. He didn't answer immediately.Lian Ziho remained unusually quiet, watching the exchange carefully. Suo ran watched him waiting.

What is he going to say? (...)

Suo Ran's fingers curled slightly against his sleeve, tension creeping in without him noticing.

Is he going to tell me the truth? (...)

Cai Lang stood there, unmoving, his expression as composed as ever too composed. The kind of calm that felt deliberate, constructed.

Or is he just going to brush it off again?

Something in Suo ran's chest tightened at the thought. He held Cai lang's gaze, searching for even the smallest crack, any hint of what was really going on beneath that controlled exterior.Cai Lang's face remained calm, controlled, as always."We met by that night chance." Cai Lang said at last. "At the station."Lian ziho tilted his head. "That's it?" "He looked lost." Cai Lang continued evenly. "Someone was bothering him. I stepped in. That's all." Suo ran's fingers tightened around the edge of the blanket.

That wasn't how it happened. (...)

There was fear. (....)

There was blood. (...)

There was a choice Cai Lang had made that night one that couldn't be undone. (...)

But Cai Lang didn't look at him."I didn't think it was important!" Cai Lang added. "I still don't." Lian ziho studied him for a second longer, eyes sharp not suspicious, but thoughtful."…Okay!" Lian ziho said "If you say so."He didn't push. But something in his expression said he had noticed the gap.Suo ran said nothing. He told himself Cai Lang had a reason. He told himself the lie was protection.Still, a strange ache settled in his chest.Cai lang had chosen what to hide.

And Suo Ran wondered When the truth finally surfaced. (...)

who would it hurt more? (...)

Cai Lang caught Suo ran's gaze then. There was something there apology, tension, warning then it was gone and the lie stayed between them, quiet and dangerous.

They didn't argue. The three of them stood under the dim streetlight, the earlier tension still hanging between them like smoke that refused to clear.Suo Ran and Cai Lang looked at each other just for a moment.

Why did you lie?

Why didn't you tell him?

Were you protecting me… or yourself?

Cai Lang's gaze was sharp, conflicted. Suo ran's was guarded, quiet and disappointed. Lian Ziho stretched his arms, completely uninterested in the silent exchange."Well." he said lightly, "this has been emotionally exhausting. I'm going home."He glanced at Suo ran. "You coming?"Suo Ran hesitated for half a second then nodded."Yeah."Cai Lang didn't stop them.He just watched as they turned and walked away together, their footsteps fading into the night.

Early morning came too fast.Suo ran's phone vibrated against the table. A message encrypted, familiar, unwelcome.

Boss: The scroll is active again. You're assigned.

Suo Ran closed his eyes.

So it hadn't ended. (....)

"How long I have to do this."

Elsewhere, Cai Lang fastened the black tactical gloves around his wrists, pulling the straps tight with practiced precision. The dim light of the safehouse cast sharp shadows across his face, emphasizing the cold focus in his dark eyes. His expression remained unreadable as he checked the knife secured at his side and adjusted the communication earpiece resting against his ear. Across from him, Lian Ziho stood beside a metal table scattered with equipment, carefully inspecting his gear. His face was serious now, brows slightly furrowed as he loaded tools into a compact pack and secured the straps across his shoulders.

"Target confirmed!" Lian Ziho said, glancing down at the tablet displaying the building layout before lifting his gaze toward Cai Lang. "Evidence of Death." Cai Lang flexed his gloved fingers once before looking up. "No casualties!" he replied calmly. His voice was steady and firm. "We steal. Nothing else." Lian Ziho closed the tablet with a quiet click and slung the bag over one shoulder. "Orders are orders!" he said with a small shrug, though his expression remained uneasy. He glanced toward the darkened window nearby, his jaw tightening slightly. "Something about today felt wrong."

Cai Lang didn't answer. His eyes narrowed briefly before he turned toward the exit. The operation itself was clean. They moved through the shadows like they belonged there, slipping past patrol routes and blind spots with effortless coordination. Security systems were disabled one after another, silent and precise. Locked doors opened without alarms. Cameras went dark seconds before they passed beneath them.

Deep inside the facility, hidden behind reinforced containment glass, rested the artifact. It sat within a black casing covered in intricate silver markings that seemed to shift whenever light touched them. A faint hum vibrated through the room, low and unnatural, raising the hairs on the back of the neck. Lian Ziho crouched beside the containment unit, quickly working through the final lock before lifting the artifact free. The strange hum deepened for a brief moment before settling again. He stared at it for a second, unease flashing across his face. "Got it!" Lian Ziho muttered, carefully securing it inside a transport case. He rose to his feet and looked toward Cai lang. "Let's move."

By nightfall, the job was done. There was no blood and no noise.Yet Cai Lang couldn't shake the feeling that someone else had been there.Suo ran crouched behind a stack of crates near the old transit zone, breathing slow and controlled. His task was finished. Information delivered.Evidence planted. All he wanted now was to leave unseen.

Then familiar voice ones. His heart dropped.

Don't tell me they are here? (....)

No....no They can't be. (...)

Then he saw Cai Lan and Lian ziho.He pulled his hood lower, stepping back too late. "There." Lian ziho said suddenly. Suo Ran froze. Cai Lang's eyes locked onto him instantly."So this is where you disappear to." Cai Lang said, his voice cold enough to cut through the noise around them.He stepped forward sharply, tension radiating off him. "You keep putting yourself in the middle of everything." "You don't get to scold me." Suo ran replied quietly, lifting his gaze despite the unease creeping into his chest.

"Not after lying." Cai Lang said.

Suo Ran's brows drew together, confusion flashing into something defensive. "What did I lie about? What are you talking about?"

Cai Lang let out a short, humorless breath, his control slipping just slightly. "Then what are you doing here?" he shot back, eyes narrowing. "You're supposed to be at home."

The words hit harder than they should have.

Suo Ran straightened, even if his legs didn't fully cooperate. "I didn't think I needed permission to step outside." he said, quieter now but the edge in his voice remained. "I told you I could handle myself."Cai Lang's expression darkened, frustration bleeding through the calm he was trying to maintain. "Handle yourself?" he repeated, disbelief laced with something sharper. "You call this handling it? Walking straight into trouble and hoping it works out?" "I wasn't hoping." Suo ran snapped back, though there was a flicker of uncertainty beneath it. "I knew what I was doing."

"Then why do you look like you can barely stand?" Cai Lang fired back immediately, his voice dropping lower, more intense. "Or are you going to pretend that's part of the plan too?"That stopped suo ran.For a second, his composure cracked just enough. " You're overreacting!" he muttered.Cai Lang took another step closer, close enough that the space between them felt suffocating. "No!" he said, quieter now,but far more dangerous. "You're underestimating everything."

Suo ran's gaze faltered, then hardened again. "And you're controlling everything." he shot back, frustration finally surfacing. "You don't trust me to do anything on my own."Lian ziho raised his hands. But stop...He turned to Suo ran. "You're done here, right?" Suo ran nodded."Good. You're coming with me."Before either of them could say more.Lian Ziho raised his hands slightly. "Alright, stop." " You need rest." Lian ziho added over his shoulder. "You look like hell."Suo ran didn't look back.Cai Lang stood there, watching them leave again. His jaw clenched. He looked down at the artifact case in his hand.At the shadows around him.At the space Suo ran had just been standing in. "Damn it." he muttered.

Whatever game had started that first night

Suo Ran was deeper in it than anyone else.

And Cai Lang was running out of time to protect him.
