The park had been tense all night. Suo Ran and Cai Lang had tracked the shadows, the flickers that had haunted every corner of the amusement park since sunset. Their breaths had been measured, muscles coiled, every instinct screaming danger.
By midnight, after hours of moving through alleyways, scanning pathways, and shadowing the figures, the situation changed.
"Did they split?" Suo Ran whispered,
crouched behind a lamp post.
Cai Lang shook his head, eyes narrowing. "No. They're still here… waiting for a misstep. But something's off. They're hesitating."
From the shadows, a faint movement caught their attention a single figure stepping forward. But then, it froze, as if reconsidering.
And then, slowly, deliberately, the shadows began to recede. One by one, the figures melted back into the darkness, disappearing along side streets, leaving only the echoes of their presence.
Suo Ran exhaled sharply. "They're… gone?"
"Not gone," Cai Lang corrected, voice low. "They withdrew. Someone behind them is satisfied for now. But this was a test."
Suo Ran's jaw tightened. "A test for what?"
Cai Lang didn't answer immediately. He only scanned the park one last time, confirming that no one remained. Then he glanced at Suo Ran, a subtle warning in his gaze. "We can't let our guard down. Not ever. But for tonight… Jun Wei is safe. That's what matters."
Suo Ran finally allowed himself a small, tense laugh. "Safe… for now."
By the time they returned to the hotel, the city streets were quiet. Streetlamps flickered softly, and the wind carried no threats, no whispers of shadowy figures. The van they had tracked earlier had vanished. The cameras, the flashes they were gone too. For the first time in days, Suo Ran could almost breathe.
Inside the hotel room, Jun Wei was sleeping peacefully, unaware of the night's dangers. Lian Ziho had stayed close by, eyes trained on the window and streets, ready to act, but eventually, even he had allowed himself a brief rest.
The shadows had receded. Not destroyed, not defeated but for now, neutralized. Whoever had orchestrated the harassment had withdrawn, for reasons unknown. Perhaps they were waiting for another move, perhaps satisfied with the fear they had planted.
Lian Ziho sat quietly, listening to Jun Wei's soft breathing. "For now," he whispered to himself, echoing Cai Lang's words. He allowed himself a moment of relief, knowing the boy could wake and go about the morning without immediate danger.
Morning sunlight spilled gently into the room. Jun Wei stirred, rubbing his eyes. "Lian Gege…"
"Good morning," Lian Ziho said softly, brushing a lock of hair from the boy's forehead. "Sleep well?"
Jun Wei blinked. "Are the shadows really gone?"
"Yes," Lian Ziho assured him. "Nothing to worry about. You're safe today."
Jun Wei smiled, bouncing lightly on the bed. "Then… I can go to school?"
"Of course," Lian Ziho replied. "No shadows, no surprises. Everything is normal."
The city outside seemed ordinary again. Children walked to school, cars hummed along the streets, and the morning was calm. But Lian Ziho's eyes remained vigilant. Step Three or whatever it was that orchestrated the shadows was not finished. This peace was temporary.
Yet for now, for Jun Wei, life could be simple. He could go to school. He could laugh. And for now, the shadows were gone
Downstairs, Suo Ran and Lian Ziho met in the hotel lobby. The air was quiet, the chaos of the previous night replaced by soft morning light. For a moment, they just looked at each other, the weight of responsibility and relief hanging between them.
Suo Ran exhaled slowly. "I… I almost lost him again."
Lian Ziho's gaze softened. "You didn't. Not this time."
Suo Ran glanced away, letting his tension ease slightly. "Thanks… for watching over him."
Lian Ziho shrugged lightly, but the faintest smile touched his lips. "We both know we can't let anything happen to him."
For a moment, silence wrapped around them, not uncomfortable, but quiet and intimate. Their shoulders brushed slightly as they walked toward the breakfast area, each lost in thought, each carrying the unspoken understanding of shared duty and trust.
Outside, the city was waking. Children walked to school. Cars hummed along the streets. The morning seemed calm, ordinary. But in the back of their minds, both Suo Ran and Lian Ziho knew: the shadows were only gone for now. Whoever had orchestrated the night's events was still out there, watching, waiting… planning the next move.
Yet for this brief moment, they allowed themselves a breath. A small, fleeting sense of normalcy. And in that quiet, Suo Ran caught Lian Ziho's eye, a subtle nod passing between them an unspoken promise to protect Jun Wei, together, no matter what came next.
Suo Ran and Lian Ziho walked beside each other on the quiet street. Jun Wei skipped ahead, backpack bouncing lightly with every step, humming a small tune to himself.
"Careful," Lian Ziho called gently. "Don't run too far."
Jun Wei looked back, smiling brightly. "I'm fine! Lian Gege, you're walking too slow!"
Suo Ran chuckled softly from beside Lian Ziho. "He's always full of energy."
Lian Ziho shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. "You say that like it's unusual."
For a few blocks, silence fell comfortably between Suo Ran and Lian Ziho, broken only by the distant sounds of morning traffic and Jun Wei's playful chatter. Then Suo Ran glanced at Lian Ziho, curiosity softening his expression.
"Do you remember the first time we walked together?" Suo Ran asked quietly.
Lian Ziho's eyes flicked to him, just slightly. "Which time?"
"The one before… everything got complicated. When we were still figuring things out." Suo Ran's voice was softer now, reflective, almost a whisper. "I remember thinking… I could trust you."
Lian Ziho paused, looking down at the ground as if retracing that memory. "I didn't know if I could trust anyone then," he admitted. "But… you made it easy to keep walking, even when I wanted to stop."
Suo Ran smiled faintly, the corners of his eyes crinkling. "Funny… I don't remember much about the path we took. Just… your presence. You were always there. Like a constant, quiet anchor."
Lian Ziho's lips curved slightly, and he let the silence linger for a moment. "I guess some things… stick with you. More than you expect."
Ahead, Jun Wei paused and turned to look at them, sensing the pause in their conversation. "Gege… are you two talking about me?"
Suo Ran laughed softly, ruffling Jun Wei's hair. "No, little guy. Just… talking about the past."
Jun Wei tilted his head. "The past? Did you fight bad people too?"
Lian Ziho crouched slightly, meeting Jun Wei's wide, curious eyes. "Yes. But today… today is for you. No shadows. No running. Just… school and breakfast."
Jun Wei grinned. "Good! Can I tell my friends I went on a 'hero mission'?"
Suo Ran and Lian Ziho exchanged a glance, smiling faintly. "If you want," Suo Ran said. "Just don't forget to do your homework."
Jun Wei laughed, skipping ahead again. Lian Ziho adjusted the strap of his bag, then glanced at Suo Ran. "It feels… normal," he said softly. "Just walking together like this."
Suo Ran nodded, letting his gaze drift forward. "Yeah. No shadows, no danger, just… this. It's nice."
Lian Ziho's voice was softer now, almost a murmur. "I didn't realize how much I missed this… just… simple moments. You, me, Jun Wei… not worrying for a while."
Suo Ran looked at him, his expression gentle. "I missed it too. And I didn't realize… until it came back."
They walked a few more blocks in companionable silence, passing small cafes and fruit stands. The sun glinted off the buildings, reflecting softly in their eyes. For the first time in weeks, neither felt the urgency of missions or danger pressing down on them.
Finally, they reached Jun Wei's school. The boy bounded ahead, stopping only to hug both of them quickly. "Bye Gege! Be safe!"
Suo Ran bent down, pressing his forehead gently against Jun Wei's hair. "You be careful today. Don't run off."
Jun Wei grinned. "Okay!" Then he turned and ran toward the school gates.
Lian Ziho exhaled, a small smile crossing his face. "He's growing up fast."
Suo Ran glanced at him, warmth in his eyes. "Yeah… and somehow… I feel like he reminds us why we keep walking. Why we protect."
Lian Ziho nodded slowly. "And also… why we walk together."
Suo Ran hesitated, then reached out lightly, brushing his fingers against Lian Ziho's arm. A simple gesture. Soft. Quiet. But it carried a promise an unspoken understanding, a tether to the calm that few other moments had given them.
Lian Ziho looked down at Suo Ran's hand, then back at him, and in the quiet of the morning, a faint, rare smile appeared. "We walk together," he repeated softly.
"yes! " Suo Ran said.
For a while, they stayed there, watching Jun Wei disappear through the school gates, letting themselves enjoy the rare normalcy, the rare peace. And even though the city outside might still hold shadows waiting for the next step, in that moment, there was only light, quiet, and trust.
Suo Ran and Lian Ziho walked side by side, Jun Wei safely at school for the day.
Up ahead, a small café caught Lian Ziho's eye. The sign swung slightly in the breeze, rustic and inviting. "Do you want to stop?" he asked casually, glancing at Suo Ran.
Suo Ran shook his head quickly, voice firm. "No, we shouldn't. I don't need coffee."
Lian Ziho raised an eyebrow. "I don't drink it either. But you look like you could use a break."
Suo Ran hesitated, then muttered, "Fine. Just… one cup. Nothing more."
The bell above the café door jingled as they entered. Warm light washed over them, the smell of roasted beans and pastries instantly calming. They took a quiet corner, the morning sunlight streaming in through the windows.
Lian Ziho ordered a latte for himself, a simple cappuccino for Suo Ran, and a small selection of pastries. Suo Ran picked at a croissant first, taking a large bite that made crumbs cling to his lip.
Lian Ziho noticed immediately. "You've got something there," he said softly, leaning in to brush the crumbs away with a careful fingertip.
Suo Ran froze for a moment, cheeks coloring faintly. "I… I can do it myself."
"I know you can," Lian Ziho said, tone gentle but firm. "But I insist."
His fingers brushed lightly against Suo Ran's face as he wiped away the pastry. The simple touch lingered just a second too long, and Suo Ran looked down at his cup, pretending not to notice.
Elsewhere, Cai Lang walked past the café, running an errand that had taken him through this part of the city. A flash of movement from inside caught his eye. His brow furrowed.
Through the window, he saw Suo Ran and Lian Ziho sitting together. Lian Ziho's hand was on Suo Ran's face, carefully brushing away crumbs. From the angle Cai Lang had, in that fleeting moment, it looked as if Lian Ziho had leaned in… and kissed him.
Cai Lang's heart clenched, a mix of confusion and irritation rising instantly. He turned sharply and walked away without saying a word, the scene burned into his mind.
Inside the café, Suo Ran finally glanced up, noticing Lian Ziho watching him with a soft, amused smile. "What?" he asked, voice faintly accusatory.
" Nothing" Lian ziho said.
For a few moments, they sipped their coffee quietly, the world outside fading into the background. The pastries were sweet, the coffee warm, and for a brief while, neither had to think about missions, shadows, or threats.
Suo Ran accidentally brushed a smudge of pastry against his cheek again while reaching for his cup. Lian Ziho leaned over instinctively, fingers brushing lightly against his skin. "You really can't eat neatly, can you?"
Suo Ran chuckled softly, a faint laugh escaping. "Apparently not."
Lian Ziho's smile widened, and he let his hand linger just a moment longer than necessary. "Then I'll just keep helping."
They shared a quiet laugh, the kind that feels like it could stretch forever. Outside, the city hummed with the ordinary rhythm of life, and for once, nothing urgent demanded their attention.
But in the distance, unseen, Cai Lang's thoughts remained tangled with that fleeting image, and the quiet peace in the café carried a subtle undercurrent, hinting at complications to come.
Suo Ran stirred the last sip of his cappuccino, watching the foam swirl lazily. Lian Ziho leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, eyes flicking to the street outside.
"Are we staying in the hotel again today?"
Suo Ran asked quietly, voice almost hesitant.
Lian Ziho tilted his head, expression unreadable. "For now."
Suo Ran frowned slightly, picking at the edge of his napkin. "Why do we keep moving? I mean… it's safe here, right?"
Lian Ziho's gaze softened. "It's not just about safety. Sometimes, we need space. To think, to plan… to protect."
Suo Ran's lips pressed into a thin line, clearly unsatisfied with the answer. "You could just tell me. I don't need all the details, but I deserve… something."
Lian Ziho paused, leaning forward slightly. "You'll know when you need to. For now, trust me."
Suo Ran studied him for a long moment, then nodded, a quiet surrender in his posture. "Fine. But… I still don't like moving so much."
"You're not alone," Lian Ziho said softly, eyes locking with his. "I'll make sure you're okay."
The corner of Suo Ran's mouth twitched faintly, almost a smile. "You always sound like you've got it all figured out."
Lian Ziho shrugged lightly. "I don't. But I try."
They left the café together, stepping into the mild afternoon sun. The city felt calmer now than it had the night before. Jun Wei safely at school, the shadows from last night seemed to have vanished at least for now.
They arrived back at the temporary hotel. The lobby was quiet, the air carrying the faint scent of cleaning solution and stale coffee. The world outside continued, unaware of the near-misses and hidden dangers.
Jun Wei was already back from school, backpack slung over one shoulder, eyes bright as he ran toward them. "Gege! You guys came back!"
Lian Ziho knelt slightly to greet him. "Did you have a good day?"
Jun Wei nodded vigorously. "Yes! But can we do something fun now?"
Suo Ran ruffled his hair gently, a small smile breaking through his usually serious expression. "We'll see."
Jun Wei pouted, then brightened again. "Please! Just a little?"
Lian Ziho exchanged a glance with Suo Ran. "Fine. Just a little," he relented, voice soft.
Later, in the room, they unpacked the few belongings they had brought. Suo Ran leaned against the wall, watching Lian Ziho move quietly around the room. For a moment, it felt like ordinary life peaceful, almost mundane.
"Lian ziho," Suo Ran said quietly. "Thanks… for today. Walking with me, staying close."
Lian Ziho paused, turning to meet his gaze. "Always."
The words hung between them, soft but heavy with meaning. Jun Wei's laughter echoed from the other side of the room as he inspected a small toy he had brought from school, breaking the tension but leaving the warmth lingering.
Outside, the city moved on. But somewhere deep in the shadows, unseen eyes tracked every movement, every casual smile, every quiet exchange. For now, the night's dangers had receded, but they had not vanished entirely.
Suo Ran sat on the edge of the bed, watching Lian Ziho arrange Jun Wei's things. A quiet thought crossed his mind: for once, maybe they could just be together without urgency, without fear. A fleeting moment of peace.
Lian Ziho glanced up, meeting Suo Ran's eyes. "We should rest soon. Tomorrow will be busy."
Suo Ran nodded slowly. "Yeah… I know. But for now…"
For now, they simply stayed close, side by side, letting the ordinary feel extraordinary, even if only for a few quiet moments.
And yet, somewhere far away, the faintest whisper of planning stirred, hinting that the calm wouldn't last forever.
