Suo Ran's breath caught.
"Cai Lang...what are you doing...?"
His back pressed flat against the wall, the cool surface seeping through his shirt. Cai Lang's hand was still wrapped around his wrist firm, unyielding, not painful… but impossible to ignore.
The distance between them was too close.
The room, the silence, the distance between them gone. For a moment, neither of them moved. Suo Ran's eyes searched his face instinctively. Cai Lang wasn't looking away.
That alone felt wrong.
He always looked away first.
"What...are you out of your mind?" Suo Ran tried again, his voice lower now, steadier but edged with confusion. "What is this about?"
Cai Lang didn't answer. Cai Lang's grip tightened slightly not enough to hurt, just enough to stop any attempt to pull away.
That small shift didn't go unnoticed.
Suo Ran stilled.
Suo ran can feel Something's wrong.
It was not danger.
Something internal.
"You're acting strange," Suo Ran said, his brows drawing together. "Since last night."
Cai Lang was still looking at him and said nothing. The silence stretched, heavy but controlled, like something waiting just beneath the surface. His eyes flickered once So slight it could have been missed but Suo Ran didn't miss it. That flicker carried something unreadable something deeper, something neither of them had words for.
For a brief moment, Cai Lang's thoughts slipped out of order.
Why him?(....) The question came suddenly, sharper than he expected.
Why Lian Ziho?(....) His gaze didn't waver, but something inside him shifted.
That image from earlier refused to leave.
Are they… that close? (....)
His fingers tightened almost unconsciously around Suo Ran's wrist not enough to hurt.
Just enough to stop him from pulling away.
Do they trust each other like that?(.....)
The thought pressed harder this time.
Or is it something else?(....)
Something he didn't want to define.
Didn't want to understand. Suo Ran shifted slightly, testing the hold, trying to pull his wrist back just a little. Cai Lang didn't let go.
His grip remained firm, steady almost instinctive. His jaw tightened faintly.
Why does it bother me? (.....)
That was the part that didn't make sense.
It shouldn't matter.(...)
None of this should matter. (.....)
Who Suo Ran trusted. Who he stood close to. Who he allowed near him.
It had nothing to do with me.(..….)
And yet ...Why does it feel like it does?(....)
His eyes darkened just slightly, the question settling deeper instead of fading.
Do they… love each other?(....)
The thought appeared quietly, but once it did, it refused to leave. It didn't feel right.
Didn't sit well and didn't align with anything he understood but it was there.
And the more he tried to dismiss it the more it stayed. Cai Lang's gaze stayed locked on Suo Ran, searching, as if the answer might be written somewhere in his expression.
But Suo Ran only looked back at him confused, unaware, completely unguarded.
And that for some reason made something tighten further in his chest.
A feeling he couldn't name Didn't want to name So instead he held on.
Just a little longer than he should have.
Suo Ran tested the hold again, subtly pulling his wrist. Cai Lang didn't let go.
The air between them thickened.
"Cai Lang." This time, his tone changed.
It was more serious.
" I said Let go." The words didn't come out sharp, but they carried weight.
It shows quiet warning and boundary.
Cai Lang didn't move. His hand remained where it was, fingers still wrapped around Suo Ran's wrist as if the command hadn't reached him or as if he had chosen not to respond. For a moment, it almost felt like time had paused.
Suo Ran's brows drew together slightly.
"…Did you hear me?"
Cai Lang didn't response but his grip didn't tighten either it just stayed firm.
Suo Ran exhaled slowly, trying to keep his patience. "This isn't funny."
Cai Lang didn't react.
"Cai Lang." Then, quieter ... "What's wrong with you?"
That question lingered longer than the others. Because this time, it wasn't just irritation. There was something else in it.
Cai Lang's eyes shifted slightly not away, but through him, as if caught between answering and holding something back. His fingers flexed faintly then stilled again. Suo Ran tested the hold once more, pulling his wrist just enough to make the intention clear.
"I'm serious," he said, voice lower now. "Let go."
Finally, Cai Lang spoke Quietly. "What if…"
The words came slower than usual, like they didn't belong to him.
Suo Ran stilled. "What?"
Cai Lang's gaze sharpened slightly something unreadable passing through it again. "What if I can't let go?"
For a moment, Suo Ran's mind went blank.
…What did he just say? (....)
The thought didn't settle properly. It lingered, circling without forming a clear meaning, as if his mind refused to place those words anywhere it could understand. Cai Lang didn't speak like that. He didn't hesitate, didn't say things that sounded… uncertain. And yet there was no trace of calculation in his voice now, no distance, nothing familiar to hold on to.
Suo Ran's fingers tensed slightly, though he didn't try to pull away this time.
He can't let go… of what? (...)
The question surfaced on its own, quiet but insistent.
Of his wrist or...(.....) He stopped himself before the thought could go any further.
No. (....)
That didn't make sense.(...)
It couldn't Still, something in his chest felt off, just enough to make him aware of his own breathing, of the space that suddenly didn't feel as steady as before. The sentence fell between them, low and controlled but carrying something far heavier than the words themselves. Suo Ran's breath caught, just for a second. "…do you even hear what are you saying ?"
Cai Lang didn't say anything.
He didn't take it back. He only held his gaze for a moment longer Then, as if pulling himself back into something more familiar, more controlled he spoke again. "Do you trust people easily?"
The question landed unexpectedly.
Suo Ran blinked. "What are you talking about? "
Cai Lang didn't move. Didn't release him.
His gaze stayed locked.
"Do you," he repeated quietly, "let people get close to you like that?"
Suo Ran frowned, confusion deepening.
"Like what?"
Silence. Cai Lang's jaw tightened slightly.
He didn't answer and didn't explain.
And somehow, that made it worse.
"You're not making sense," Suo Ran said, a hint of irritation slipping in. "If you have something to say, just say it."
Another pause.
"You don't think about it?" Cai Lang asked.
"About what?"
"Who you let in."
Suo Ran stared at him for a moment.
Then exhaled softly, trying to ground the situation. "This again?"
What's wrong with him? Why is he asking this kind of questions? (.....)
he muttered. "You already asked something like this last night."
Cai Lang's eyes shifted just briefly.
Suo Ran's voice softened, but his expression stayed sharp.
"What's really bothering you?"
That question hung heavier than the rest.
Because this time Cai Lang didn't answer immediately. For a split second, something almost surfaced domething honest.
But just as quickly it disappeared.
"Okay, you are doing this again. You can ask me questions but when it's comes to you you just stand there."
His expression hardened slightly.
The grip on Suo Ran's wrist loosened.
And then he let go just like that.
The sudden absence of contact felt noticeable. Suo Ran didn't move right away.
He stayed where he was, watching him.
For a brief moment, his mind didn't catch up with what had just happened. It lingered somewhere in between.on the warmth that had been there seconds ago, on the weight of that grip that had lasted just a little too long.
What… was that? (....)
The question came slowly, almost cautiously, as if he wasn't sure he wanted the answer.
Cai Lang had never acted like that before.
He never crossed a line without reason and yet, just now, there had been no reason. No threat. No urgency.
Only… that.
Suo Ran's brows furrowed faintly.
Why was he holding on like that?(...)
His gaze lingered on Cai Lang's hand for a fraction of a second before shifting back to his face.
And that look…There had been something in it. Something he couldn't read and Something that didn't fit into anything he knew about him. Suo Ran exhaled slowly, trying to steady his thoughts.
Since when does he hesitate?
The question didn't leave it stayed there, pressing quietly at the back of his mind because Cai Lang didn't hesitate.
Suo Ran's fingers curled slightly at his side, an unconscious reaction.
"What if I can't let go"…
The words echoed again, softer this time, but heavier. He shouldn't be thinking about it.
It didn't mean anything.
And yet
Why did it feel like it did? (.....)
Cai Lang stepped back once then again.
Rebuilding the distance he had broken moments ago. "We're leaving this place soon," he said flatly.
The shift was abrupt.
Suo Ran's eyes narrowed slightly.
"That's your answer?"
Cai Lang didn't response.
"Cai Lang."
He turned slightly, as if preparing to move away.
Cai Lang was Avoiding him.
Suo Ran pushed himself off the wall.
"That's not what I asked."
"I heard you."
"Then answer."
Silence in room returned.
Suo Ran studied him carefully now.
He noticed rvery movement and pause trying to piece it together.
Last night's question about love.
Today's behavior.
That strange intensity just now.
And something else Something he couldn't fully grasp yet.
"…You're hiding something," Suo Ran said quietly.
Cai Lang didn't react.
Didn't deny it. Which, in itself, felt like an answer.
Suo Ran let out a slow breath.
"Fine," he said after a moment. "If you don't want to talk about it, don't."
But his tone carried a subtle edge.
He turned away slightly, running a hand through his hair yet his mind didn't settle.
It kept circling back.
Morning light filtered softly through the streets. Jun Wei swung his arms as he walked, his small hand loosely held in Lian Ziho's.
"Do I have to go to school today?" he asked, dragging his steps just slightly.
Lian Ziho glanced down at him. "Yes."
"But everything just got normal again."
"That's exactly why you should go."
Jun Wei pouted. "What if something happens?"
"Then I'll be there."
Jun Wei looked up at him suspiciously.
"You can't be inside my classroom."
Lian Ziho almost smiled. "I'll be nearby."
Jun Wei considered that. "…Okay. But if something feels weird, I'm leaving."
"That's not how school works."
"It is for me."
Lian Ziho let out a quiet sigh. Some things never changed.
But even as he walked.his mind wasn't entirely here. Something felt… off.
He couldn't explain it Just a feeling and those were usually the ones he trusted most.
Back at the hotel Suo Ran stood near the window, arms crossed loosely. Cai Lang moved around the room quietly, gathering a few things. Neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn't comfortable.
But it wasn't hostile either.
Just… unresolved. After a while, Suo Ran spoke again.
"…You didn't answer me."
Cai Lang didn't look up. "I don't need to."
Suo Ran let out a soft, humorless breath.
"Right." Another pause.
Then, more quietly. "You're not the only one who notices things."
That made Cai Lang stop just slightly.
Suo Ran continued. "You've been acting differently since yesterday."
Still no response. "But fine," Suo Ran said. "Keep it to yourself."
He turned his gaze back to the window.
The city outside looked calm.
And yet Inside the room nothing felt settled.
A few minutes passed. Then Cai Lang spoke again. "…We should move locations by evening."
Suo Ran didn't turn. "Already?"
"Yes."
"Because of the shadows?" A pause.
"…Precaution."
Suo Ran hummed quietly. "Or something else?"
He didn't answer.
That confirmed it again.Suo Ran closed his eyes briefly then opened them.
"…You're really bad at hiding things, you know."
Cai Lang didn't reply but his grip on the bag in his hand tightened slightly.
The distance between them remained but something had changed. Not visibly but anyone else would have noticed. it was there quiet, settled beneath the surface, altering the space between them in ways neither of them acknowledged.
Suo Ran stayed by the window, his gaze fixed on the city below. Cars moved in steady lines, people walked without hesitation, everything outside carrying on as if nothing had shifted. It should have felt grounding.
It didn't
Behind him, Cai Lang moved with the same calm efficiency as always, gathering what little they had brought with them, checking things without a word. On the surface, nothing about him had changed either.
And yet Suo Ran could still feel it.
That moment from earlier hadn't disappeared it lingered, quietly pressing at the edges of his thoughts, refusing to fade the way it should have.
"What if I can't let go…"
His fingers curled slightly at his side before he relaxed them again.
No, there is no point thinking about it.(....)
Whatever that was it didn't belong to anything real. (....)
Still, he didn't turn around.
He didn't look at him because some part of him knew if he did, he might start looking for answers he wasn't ready to face.
The silence stretched again, thinner this time, but no less present.
Then "Pack light." Cai Lang's voice broke through it, low and controlled.
Suo Ran opened his eyes fully, though he hadn't realized when he'd closed them again.
"I know you don't have to tell me," he replied, tone even.
Then, after a moment he asked. "Where are we going?"
"Temporary location," Cai Lang said. "Safer."
"Safer," Suo Ran repeated quietly, as if testing the word. "Or more convenient?"
Cai Lang was packing clothes or pretending and he didn't response.
Suo Ran let out a faint breath, almost a soft laugh, though there was no humor in it.
"Right. Whom I'm asking ?! everyone here expect answers but when it's their turn..."
He finally turned slightly, not fully facing him, but enough to catch him in his peripheral vision. Cai Lang was standing near the table now, one hand still gripping the strap of the bag a little too tightly, like he hadn't noticed he was doing it.
Suo Ran's gaze lingered for a second.
Then shifted away.
"…You know," he said after a moment, voice quieter now, "you're usually better at this."
Cai Lang didn't look up. "At what?"
"Pretending nothing's wrong."
That made him pause Just briefly.
It was subtle but Suo Ran saw it.
A few seconds passed before Cai Lang moved again, adjusting the bag, his expression unreadable.
"There's nothing wrong."
The answer came too clean.
Suo Ran leaned his shoulder lightly against the wall, watching him now without hiding it.
"…You keep telling yourself that."
Cai Lang didn't respond.
He didn't argue and didn't confirm.
And that silence said enough.
Suo Ran studied him for a moment longer, then looked away again, his gaze drifting back toward the window.
"Fine," he said softly. "I won't ask."
Another pause. "But now don't expect me to answer as well."
The room fell quiet again after that.
Cai Lang finally picked up the bag, slinging it over his shoulder. His movements were steady, precise like always but just before he turned away his gaze flickered, almost unconsciously, toward Suo Ran just for a second. Then it was gone like it had never been there.
Suo Ran didn't turn but somehow he knew.
And that was exactly what made it harder to ignore. Outside, the city remained calm.
Inside nothing had settled at all.
Cai Lang turned toward the door, the bag already slung over his shoulder.
"Suo Ran you don't need to follow me."
His voice came before he even stepped out.
Suo Ran frowned slightly. "What?"
Cai Lang didn't look back. "Aren't you going to wait for Lian Ziho and Jun Wei?"
That made him pause. Suo Ran straightened from the wall, eyes narrowing a little. "We should leave together." For a moment, there was nothing then
"No." The answer came flat, immediate.
Suo Ran blinked, caught off guard. "…No?"
Cai Lang turned his head slightly, just enough for his profile to be seen. "I'll go ahead."
"What?"
"You can come with them later. I'll send the location."
Suo Ran stared at him, the words taking a second longer than they should have to settle. "…You're serious?"
"Yes."
A sharp breath left him. "That doesn't make any sense. We just decided to move, and now you're splitting up for no reason?"
"There is a reason."
"Then say it."
Cai Lang didn't answer yhat silence again heavy, familiar, and increasingly frustrating.
"Unbelievable." Suo Ran pushed himself off the wall and stepped closer. "Since when do you make decisions alone like this?"
"Since now." Cai Lang's grip tightened slightly around the strap of his bag.
"That's not an answer."
"It is."
Suo Ran's eyes hardened. "No. It's you avoiding the question. Again."
Cai Lang didn't react. And somehow, that made it worse. "First that whole thing earlier," Suo Ran continued, voice dropping, sharper now, "and now this? You think you can just walk out without explaining anything?"
"I'm not asking you to follow me."
"That's not the point."
"Then what is?" Suo Ran stopped just for a second because even he didn't have a clean answer. His jaw tightened. "The point is we don't split up like this. Not without a plan. Not without telling the others."
"I'll tell them."
"After you leave?" Suo Ran let out a quiet scoff. "That's not how this works."
This time, Cai Lang turned fully their eyes met. "Stay here."
The words were calm but not light. suo Ran's brows drew together. "…Excuse me?"
"Wait for them. It's safer."
"And going alone isn't?"
"I didn't say that."
"Then what are you saying?"
A brief pause. "…I'll handle it faster alone."
"Handle what?" Suo Ran pressed, disbelief clear now.
He still didn't answer. Something tightened in Suo Ran's chest not quite anger, but close enough to burn. "You're doing it again," he said quietly.
Still no response. Cai lang was ignorig his eye contact.
"You don't trust me enough to even say it."
"That's not it."
"Then what is it?" Suo Ran stepped closer, closing the distance just enough to make it intentional. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you're pushing me out."
Cai Lang's expression didn't change but his eyes flickered just once.
"…This isn't about trust."
"Then stop making it look like it is."
Silence stretched between them, thinner now, sharper.
Suo Ran exhaled, dragging a hand through his hair. "You want to go alone? Fine."
His voice steadied but only just.
"But at least give me a real reason."
For a second, it looked like Cai Lang might.
His fingers flexed slightly against the strap, his gaze shifting something almost surfacing.
Then He said "…It's better this way."
A quiet, humorless laugh slipped from Suo Ran. "Right."
He shook his head. "You're really bad at this, you know that?"
No response.
"'It's better this way,' 'stay here,' 'I'll handle it'…" His gaze sharpened. "You keep saying things like that like I'm just supposed to accept it."
Suo Ran looked at him for a long moment.
Then, quieter "…Or is it that you don't want me there?" That landed. Cai Lang's eyes shifted slightly but he didn't answer.
And that was enough. Something in Suo Ran's expression stilled. "Got it."
He stepped back not far, but enough.
Enough to put space where there hadn't been any before. "Go, then."
His voice was even.
"I'll wait." For a brief second, Cai Lang didn't move. Like he might say something.
But whatever it was he didn't. He turned, opened the door, and walked out. The door closed softly but in the quiet room, it felt louder than it should have.
Suo Ran didn't move. He just stood there, staring at it. "…Unbelievable."
The word came out low, almost absent.
"...ahh really?! "
His fingers curled slightly at his side, then loosened again. "…You don't want me there, huh…"
He let out a slow breath, trying to let it go.
But it didn't. That moment from earlier the way Cai Lang had held his wrist, the tension, the silence it all lingered.
And now this Suo Ran turned back toward the window, but this time, his gaze didn't settle on the city it drifted.
Caught somewhere else entirely.
Why does this feel…(....)
He stopped. The thought didn't finish. Didn't need to because he already knew it wasn't just about Cai Lang leaving.
And that was exactly what made it worse.
