Khal's tone was calm, at least when he asked this.

One thing both of them noticed about Ayen was that he tended to be straightforward and one who followed his instincts the most. Most of Ayen's actions were driven by his instincts and desire.
Ayen also was not one to risk his life. This point calmed the two, but they were still upset. Ayen had no intention to say assuring words, which he never meant.
He was also clueless about what was about to happen. It was true he was not feeling nervous, but he remained apprehensive about the results.
"I don't know." Ayen could only answer this way. Was he being too nonchalant about this? "It's not painful," he repeated.
