Fifth Avenue was a ghost of its former self. The once-thriving heart of New York City was now a cordoned-off wasteland of shattered asphalt and twisted steel. In the center of the wreckage sat the massive meteor crater, a jagged wound in the earth that authorities estimated would take months to repair.
In an era before the dominance of mobile internet, the vacuum of information was filled by sensationalist headlines. Rumors of alien invasions and cosmic strikes began to saturate the web's portal sites. Despite the police cordon, the perimeter was swarmed by news vans, each hungry for a career-defining scoop.
Among them was Eddie Brock of the Daily Bugle. A newcomer desperate for a breakthrough, Eddie watched the crater with predatory intensity, waiting for any sign of the "Superheroes" who had leveled the block.
A Rain of Pumpkin Bombs
The atmosphere of nervous waiting was shattered by a streak of green light across the night sky. A figure on a Green Goblin Glider hissed through the air, drawing shouts from the crowd below. Eddie Brock's eyes widened as he fumbled for his camera.
"It's the Green Goblin! He's back!"
Before the shutter could click, a Pumpkin Bomb arced through the sky, landing squarely in the cluster of news vans.
Boom!
The violent explosion turned the media staging area into a charnel house. Screams erupted as the ruins of Fifth Avenue were once again bathed in fire. The bombardment continued—dozens of bombs rained down, clearing the area of police and reporters alike. Those who survived fled in a blind panic, leaving the crater unguarded.
The Green Goblin wasn't just clearing the area; he was targeting the g1-plasma drones Peter had left behind. With surgical precision, he blasted the drones into fragments, cutting off the high-temperature suppression that had been keeping the depths of the crater in check.
The Unsealing
Without the constant $5000\text{°C}$ plasma spray to keep the molten iron and crystals solidified, a crevice was forced open from within. Two pale, white hands gripped the edges of the cooling slag, and with a violent heave, a figure leaped into the air.
Karn was free.
Before the Inheritor could even draw a breath of the soot-filled air, the Green Goblin descended, hovering just out of reach. His voice was a hoarse, maniacal rasp.
"Nice to meet you. I am the Green Goblin, an enemy of Spider-Man. Since I've gone to the trouble of rescuing you, I believe it's time we discuss a partnership to deal with our mutual problem."
Karn's only response was a gaze of chilling indifference. "Have you ever seen a human negotiate with a slice of bread? If I weren't in a hurry, you would already be a meal."
The Goblin was cunning enough to maintain his distance, his glider's engines humming as he gauged the predator below. Karn, fueled by a thirst for revenge against the "Spiders" who had humiliated him, had no interest in toys or temporary alliances. He vanished into the shadows of the ruins, a blur of dark energy.
Norman Osborn watched him go, a twisted smile playing across his face.
"It won't be long before we meet again," Norman muttered. "Once you realize what you're up against, you'll find the patience to talk. Harry... that good-for-nothing... but this creature? He is a much better choice."
A Warning in the Lab
Back at the Osborn Manor, Peter was deep in the manufacturing phase of the Anti-Morlun Suit. The silence of the laboratory was broken by the voice of deep blue emanating from his wrist gauntlet.
"Master, the g1-plasma units on Fifth Avenue have been destroyed. Karn has been unsealed. Please take immediate precautions."
Peter stopped, his soldering tool still hot. He looked at the half-finished armor on the rack, his brow furrowed. "He broke the seal this quickly? That's impossible."
Deep blue projected a 3D hologram of the carnage. The footage captured the moment the original Green Goblin, Norman Osborn, systematically dismantled the drones.
"It appears," deep blue reported, "that Norman Osborn has returned."
