Cherreads

Chapter 8 - Ship.

We awoke in the morning and went down to the diner for some breakfast. We had some biscuits, eggs, sausage, and some milk for about 50 coppers each meal. They said that milk and sausage is expensive. We went out to the clothing store to find clothing for Tenka, about 15 silver was spent on the clothes. We also bought a staff for Tenka to use, since staffs channel mana better for stronger attacks. We spent 40 silvers of a decent staff.

We then went to buy some travel food and we put it in his magic bag and my box. The ship arrived and many people unloaded from the ship. We got our passes checked and we set sail a few hours later to go to the main continent. "Here's your room sir", a crewmate said when they got to our room.

Tenka and I set up our gear in the room and we got comfortable. "Tenka, how did you meet that skull you called master ?" I asked curiously. "He saved me from hunters when I ran to his hut by accident. He used a wonderful spell like a firecracker which exploded into many different colors!" He said with a grin recalling his past. "Then he began to teach me magic. He taught me the firework magic and the-"

He paused for a long moment. "Then I killed him. My firework spell hit him in the heart, and he died." He said with sorrow. "I cried over his corpse for hours, when all of a sudden his body reanimated with a purple glow. He revived himself and became an undead." He said with guilt. " He lost his chance of eternal rest for me, and I felt so much guilt. Then he taught me how to perform necromancy so that he could try to be revived in a real body."

He said. "But I failed. No matter what I did he just couldn't come back to a real body. That's when I tried to kill a mage to see if the body would work for him to be revived, and then they captured me as a slave." He said sadly. "Then 2 months later you bought me at the auction." He said to sum up his story.

"What's your story?" He asked with curiosity. I knew that I couldn't tell him I came from the other world because I would get executed if he told anyone, so I came up with a story about me being exiled from my family and living in Danx until now. "That seems tough Centi", he said with empathy.

After we finished talking, I went outside to look at the ocean, when I saw a flock of birds in the distance. A crewmember saw them and the looked horrified. "I-its the Kirken bandits.", he said in terror. "Its just the bandits", I said because they aren't really that much of a threat.

He ignored me yelled for his captain and for the fighters of the boat. "Go back inside kid, these aren't the normal bandits on land. You see those birds? Those are giant cockatoos they are riding. Those things will even kill aura users if they aren't careful." He said whilst arming himself.

I walked back inside to my room, wondering what it would be like to ride a cockatoo that massive, when I had a dumb idea. "I could just steal an egg and raise it!" I thought to myself. I called for Tenka to assist me and we went back outside. By the time we got outside the bandits were already on the ship fighting the crewmates. Our side was clearly losing, so I had Tenka deal with the birds and I dealt with the bandits.

As I was killing the bandits I noticed that Tenka was struggling because he could only use the fireworks because necromancy was forbidden. I yelled at the crewmates to go inside because "I can handle this" when really I couldn't but Tenka and his summons can. When the last crewmate went inside I signaled to Tenka to take out the summons from the bag. I successfully killed all the crewmates and all that was left was Kirken and his massive bird.

"So I guess you really could handle it", Kirken said with an amused grin, his yellowed teeth emitting a rotten stench. "I guess so" I said smugly. That must have set him off because he unleashed a thick red aura all around his body. This worried me because that means he has much more aura than me if he can emit around his whole body.

Even after years of work, I can only emit energy around my eyes, arms, and legs without losing all of my energy. He equipped his axe and lunged towards me, I was going to dodge but I remembered that Tenka is behind me and he wouldn't survive an attack like that. I stepped towards him with momentum from my legs and channeled the energy from my legs to my arms to increase my output. Our weapons clashed, and I was sent flying back straight into the captains office.

I tried to recover but when I did I saw Tenka getting choked by Kirken. I channeled the energy into my arms and legs and I went for a strike. He released his grip only to punch me square in the jaw. I was again sent flying back, and I knew I had no real way out of this. As I laid in the office, my life began to flash before my eyes and all of the memories I had flooded in all at once. While I was lost in my own fear Tenka called out to me, "Get up Centi! Remember why we are fighting!" That made me chuckle. I was only fighting because I didn't want to die, I really had nothing else going for me at the moment.

As I gave up, I remembered myself in my past life, with a feeble sickly body. I remembered how HE never gave up, that young scrawny kid who was told he couldn't succeed. That made me mad, because I have had way better opportunities in this life, yet am I really going to waste it by waiting for my death? "Hell no, I won't give up", I thought to myself as I tried to stand. While trying to find out what to do, a crewmate ran over to Tenka and tried to help him fight Kirken.

Seeing his sheer will made me remember something from a book I saw in the library. A kids story about an ordinary man who always helped no matter the difficulty, who used a glowing sword to always win the battle. I suddenly had an enlightenment. "If I put the energy into the club, then It will drastically gain attack power" I thought. As I was thinking the crewmate was calling me out to help, so I did.

I channeled the power into my legs once again, and I focused the power not just into my arms, but also into my weapon. When I rushed at him, he saw me coming and tried to parry my attack. I smashed straight through his axe and I slammed the club into his temple. He collapsed to the ground, and his body started twitching. I got the club and finished him off, with the only sound left in the whole ocean being my heavy breathing, and the rain that began to fall.
