(Mirael's Pov)
I move back, one tiny, quiet step at a time. I have to stay away from the hairy thing. I keep my dagger out in front of me, pointing at the dark where I think its chest is. My heart is beating so loud I'm worried it might hear it.
Think, Mirael, think. Master says always think before you act.
Should I run? No, if I run I might trip on a root and then it'll catch me. Should I stay still? Maybe, but what if it moves first? Should I hit it? No way! I don't even know how big it is.
Suddenly, a sound breaks the scary quiet.
Woof! Woof!
"Huh? A dog?" I blink into the blackness.
Woof woof! Haahh... haahhh...
Before I can even move my feet, something huge and fuzzy crashes into my side. It's not biting, though. It's wiggling! I feel a big, warm body rubbing in a circle around my legs, nearly knocking me over.
Woof!
It barks right in my ear and then—mlem!—a giant, wet tongue slaps across my cheek.
"Koda?" I whisper. My voice is shaking.
