"Same side?" Emma laughed coldly, the sound full of mockery. "You say it as if we're fighting a war. But it seems you've forgotten that I fought alone for many years without needing anyone behind me. And now, you want to control everything about me?"
Emma's words struck Jackson like knives to the heart. He could not believe she had said such things.
"Control? You think I'm trying to control you? I only want to help you, to make sure we're heading in the right direction, but you think I'm controlling you?"
Emma did not answer immediately, but her eyes were full of determination.
"Jackson, you don't understand. This is my life, my past, and I don't want anyone interfering, not even you."
Jackson sighed, trying to stay calm, but hurt was still clear in his voice.
"I'm not interfering, Emma. I just want to know what you're planning to do, because we're a team. We need to work together. But you think I'm trying to impose my will on you."
