Lukas drove to a foresty area kinda far away from the city. After some time, he stopped the car, got out, and opened the trunk.
"Catch."
He threw me a shovel and then started digging the dirt in one spot.
"Mind giving me a hand?"
When he said that, I snapped back to reality and thought to myself, Oh dang, I killed someone and need to bury her.
So I started digging with the shovel.
After a while, when the spot was ready, we pushed the body in, put the dirt back, and flattened it.
"Finally, a job well done. Let me drop you off at the campus."
We got back in the car, and I was feeling spaced out. I was tired. I had been awake for more than 20 hours, and I still had a school day tomorrow.
Lukas drove over to the campus and dropped me off.
"I gotta get back home in an hour, so see you later, mate."
I walked over to my dorm room and lay down in bed. I looked at the time. 5:16.
At this time, I could get two hours of sleep, but that was good enough for me.
Before I could sleep, a thought crept into my mind.
What if I fucked up and accidentally left evidence that could lead back to me?
Fuck. I can't think about this now. I gotta go to sleep.
My alarm went off, and I woke up at 7:30. My roommate had already left. I guess he woke up early.
Before I got dressed, I made a sandwich for breakfast. While eating it, every second I kept thinking the police would just bust down the door and arrest me.
I went to my first lesson of the day. I couldn't listen to what anyone was saying. I couldn't focus.
Then a voice pulled me back.
"Yo, the teach is asking you something."
I went up to the board to answer the question. When I was going back to my seat, it felt like everyone was looking at me like they knew what I had done.
Lunch time came, and I sat in the cafeteria with my friends. Then an announcement came through.
"Good morning, everyone. We would like to inform you that a student from the tenth grade, Sofia Nováková, did not return home yesterday evening. Her family has contacted the school, and we are currently trying to find out where she was after classes ended. If any of you know what happened, please tell the administration."
After the announcement, I just heard everyone whispering shit like:
"Was she kidnapped?"
"I bet she's just wasting time."
"They're just fearmongering."
Then another student came to my table and asked,
"Oi, mate. Mind if I sit here?"
I looked at the person.
It was Lukas.
What did this fuck want now?
I just answered back.
"Sure, it's empty."
My friends asked,
"Y'all know each other?"
I didn't know how to answer this question. I mean, until yesterday, wait, no, until TODAY, I had never even talked with this bloke, and now he's coming here all willy-nilly.
But he did help me get rid of "something," soooo...
"Yeah, we kinda know each other."
They just answered with an "Alright" and didn't question it any further, turning back to their conversation.
Then Lukas asked,
"Yo, mate. You got the history notes? I missed the class, so you know, I couldn't write it."
At that point, I just felt dumbfounded. You're telling me this guy found me with a dead body, put it in his trunk, helped me bury it, and now he's asking me for fucking notes in the span of 12 hours?
I snapped back and told him,
"Yeah, mate. Here."
I gave him my notebook, and he took it, took two photos of the pages, and gave it back to me.
"Thanks, mate. You are a lifesaver."
It was like he was taunting me with those last words. Now I couldn't even tell if he was actually a friend or not.
I just told myself whatever and went back to eating.
After the school day ended, I was gonna go back to my dorm until I remembered the thought I had last night.
What if I had left some evidence?
So, after many people had left, I went back to the school to check the storage room.
I walked back toward the school and, wow, surprise surprise, there were still workers in the building.
Fuck.
You know what? I'm still gonna take my chances. Maybe if I go slowly and carefully, they won't notice me.
I just gotta time it right.
I made my way to the storage room and checked every part of it. Everything seemed ordinary. It just looked like a normal room.
Then I saw it.
Little drops of dried blood.
And a phone.
I was right to question myself.
Just when I picked up the phone and was about to deal with the blood, I heard voices from outside the room.
"Hey, did you get all your assigned rooms?"
"Nah, only like five remaining."
"Five? Damn."
"Yeah, I'll get them done soon."
Dear God. No fucking way.
After everything I'd done to hide this, it could all go down because of a fucking janitor.
I quickly cleaned up the blood as fast as I could, but there were still some marks left behind because the blood had already dried.
Then I heard the door opening.
I hid behind some tables and boxes.
Fuck. If he noticed me, I might be done for. I don't think there was a way to spin this. Maybe I could say I was looking for an item I lost, but then he might find the remaining blood that I had sloppily cleaned up.
I guess I just gotta pray for it not to happen.
The way I was evading the janitor was like something straight out of a cartoon. Every time he got closer, I slowly moved to a different side of the table so he wouldn't notice me.
Then I saw my opening, a way for me to get out.
I quickly made my way back to the dorm building. It felt like a miracle that I wasn't noticed by anyone.
I went to a spot where I could collect my thoughts, then checked the phone and tried to open it. Maybe I could find something that might help me.
It's locked.
I tried some passwords, but it didn't open, so I was just gonna keep the phone until I could figure out the password.
But then I remembered that it was possible to track a phone's location through the SIM card and mobile connection.
I took out the SIM card, destroyed it, and threw it in the sink.
But now I had a whole phone.
How could I get rid of it? It couldn't be as easy as the SIM card.
Should I even destroy it?
Destroying the SIM card was the right move in my opinion, but I didn't think they could track just the phone. Maybe I should keep it until I knew the password.
I went back to my dorm room. My roommate was already there.
"Sup."
Wow. He wasn't finding it weird that I came back really late.
I guess, thank God for non-overthinkers.
I checked my phone.
Missing report has been made about Sofia.
So the police had probably started a search for her. Hopefully, they would just think of this as another teenage runaway situation. Maybe that could give me some time to think of other plans.
My mind went back to the storage room.
There was still a janitor in there. I mean, yes, I did clean up the blood a little, but it was still visible.
Hopefully, he just cleans it so I don't have to think about any other evidence that might put me away behind bars.
