Chapter 52: The God of Wisdom Maintaining Order
"Anyway, since you both agree, that's perfect."
Kotoko's face brightened instantly. She clasped her hands together with obvious delight, smiling as if she had just been handed good news on a silver tray.
"Just today, right after I returned from the Dungeon, a few yokai came to ask for my help. They said a particularly powerful, completely uncommunicative evil spirit recently barged into the place where they live."
Her tone stayed sweet, but the content wasn't.
"They want me to eliminate it so they can return to a peaceful, stable life."
Asuna nodded, neither overly excited nor dismissive.
"An evil spirit, huh… Where is it? Tomorrow's Sunday, so there's no school. If it's still within Tokyo, we should be able to handle it in a day. It'll be a good chance to get used to our new skills."
"It is within Tokyo." Kotoko smiled, then casually dropped a name.
"That place is…"
She paused for effect, then said it clearly.
"The high school in Tokyo, Private Toyosaki Academy."
.........
The next day, Sunday morning, outside Private Toyosaki Academy.
"Why…"
Asuna stared at Kotoko, who was dressed in a half face masquerade mask, a Western style dress, and a top hat. With her petite frame and flawless styling, she looked both elegant and absurdly eye catching.
Then Asuna looked at Asagiri, wearing black casual clothes and a gray mask, the Diplomat exclusive equipment, the Ever changing Mask.
Asuna's shoulders sagged.
"Why are you two dressed like you're attending some secret aristocratic gala… while I'm stuck with a mask, sunglasses, and a baseball cap? I look like a perverted stalker!"
"Accurate." Asagiri nodded, inspecting her outfit with the seriousness of a fashion critic.
In a tracksuit, black mask, sunglasses, and cap, with her long flaxen hair tucked away, it really was hard to tell what she even was at first glance.
"As a trio, our vibes are completely mismatched," he continued with a teasing smile. "Me and Necro look like members of a mysterious villain organization from a shonen manga."
He tilted his head.
"And you look like you ran out of Rapelay 3."
Kotoko blinked once, genuinely curious.
Asuna's eye twitched.
"I don't know what Rapelay 3 is, but based on your tone, it doesn't sound like anything decent."
"Impudent." Asagiri frowned, folding his arms with righteous indignation. "That is a pioneering masterpiece that opened a new era in graphics and gameplay. How dare you judge it so casually?"
"The more you defend it, the less decent it sounds," Asuna muttered, already done with him.
She turned toward the wall in front of them, nearly four meters high. Taking a few steps back, she activated Wind Blessing.
Her body surged forward in a burst of acceleration. She pushed off the wall and landed neatly on top.
Asagiri didn't even bother with a running start. He jumped straight up, grabbed the edge with one hand, and pulled himself over in a clean, stylish motion that looked unfairly effortless.
"Hey, wait…"
Kotoko looked up at them from the ground, expression flat.
"You two… You don't seriously think I can jump up there too, do you?"
"Relax." Asagiri crouched down at the edge and extended a hand, smiling. "I'll pull you up."
Then, without the slightest hesitation, he added, "Hand me your leg."
"Leg?" Asuna repeated, confused.
At a time like this, shouldn't it be hand, not leg? What kind of plan was that? An invincible handstand? Some new athletic technique?
"Okay."
Kotoko's answer was calm. Her next action, however, nearly short circuited Asuna's brain.
Kotoko bent down, detached her prosthetic left leg with practiced ease, then lifted it up like she was handing over a suitcase. She offered the prosthetic limb to Asagiri.
Using it like a bridge to close the height gap, Asagiri hauled her up smoothly.
Kotoko sat down on the wall and began reattaching the prosthetic limb like nothing had happened.
"No, you two…"
Asuna was too shocked to even finish the sentence.
So when he said hand me your leg, he meant it literally.
Asuna wasn't surprised Asagiri could come up with something that bizarre. What really stunned her was that Kotoko understood instantly.
These two… had ridiculous chemistry.
After they dropped down onto the other side and officially infiltrated Private Toyosaki Academy, Asagiri scanned their surroundings. They had landed near the sports field.
According to the yokai, the Banshee that terrified them mostly wandered around the library building.
Once he confirmed their position, Asagiri led Kotoko and Asuna forward.
It was Sunday, so the academy was empty. Some schools opened facilities to the public during holidays, but those were usually public schools. Private Toyosaki Academy clearly wasn't the generous type.
Otherwise, they could have just entered through the front gate like normal people instead of climbing walls and performing what was essentially tactical leg deployment.
"By the way…"
Asuna's voice lowered as they moved. Her earlier jokes had faded, replaced by a cautious tension.
"With our current strength… are we sure we can eliminate that Banshee?"
"No problem." Kotoko nodded calmly.
"In the real world… no, in our world, it's basically impossible for something as powerful as the Floating Corpse Evil Spirit from the Dungeon to appear."
She spoke like she was stating a law of physics.
"If a hotel had consecutive drowning incidents, it would be shut down for investigation. Guests wouldn't keep staying. During the search, the body in the water tank would be found quickly."
Kotoko's tone stayed gentle, but her logic was merciless.
"And once the body is dealt with, the Banshee would dissipate."
.........
They reached the building where the library was located.
Kotoko was about to speak when a beastlike shriek exploded from the top of the stairs.
"Roar!!!"
A black figure shot out like a projectile, diving straight for Kotoko, who was in front and had just stepped onto the stairs.
"Necro, be careful!"
Asuna's warning didn't even finish.
Kotoko bent slightly, then moved with a grace that didn't match her fragile appearance at all. In one clean motion, she flipped backward down the stairs, landing smoothly on the ground and dodging the attack by a hair's breadth.
"Snap."
A crisp cracking sound followed her movement.
Her prosthetic limb connection gave out mid motion, and the leg clattered across the floor.
"It broke again…" Kotoko sighed, almost mildly annoyed.
Asagiri walked over, picked up the prosthetic limb, and handed it back to her with the same calm politeness as returning a dropped pen.
"Here. Your leg."
"Thank you, Leader."
Kotoko accepted it, then straightened her beret with one hand while standing on one leg, completely unbothered by the absurdity of the moment.
She lifted her head.
At the top of the stairs stood the monster, a dark shape with a vicious presence that turned the air heavy.
For the first time, Kotoko's expression became truly serious.
Her deep purple eyes were flat, emotionless, and cold. She stared at the evil spirit as if measuring it, not fearing it.
Her voice was quiet, steady, and absolute.
"Both the human world and the yokai world must maintain basic order."
She raised her cane slightly, like a judge lifting a gavel.
"I am the God who protects that order."
Her gaze sharpened into something merciless.
"And you…"
Kotoko's tone dropped, final as a sentence.
"Have crossed the line."
