Konoha Research Division.

Orochimaru walked ahead with quick, light steps, the hem of his white lab coat brushing silently over the cold, polished floor. He led Tsunade and Taiichi through a series of heavy doors that required complex clearance seals before finally stopping in front of one marked with intricate sealing runes.

"This is it."

A trace of excitement slipped into Orochimaru's voice. He formed a short sequence of hand seals. The runes glowed briefly, then faded. The thick door slid open without a sound.

A thicker, more complex scent hit them immediately—something that smelled of both decay and new life.

The moment Tsunade and Taiichi stepped inside, their eyes locked onto the scene at the center of the lab.

The room was unusually large, deliberately kept dim except for a few specialized cold-light lamps. What dominated the space, however, were dozens of grotesquely twisted "trees" standing in the central area.

They were not natural plants. Their trunks had a sickly gray-white color, eerily similar to the skin of White Zetsu. The surfaces were covered in vein-like, raised wooden patterns that twisted and coiled. Some branches even had partially formed, purplish-red fleshy growths that looked disturbingly like animal tissue. The whole scene radiated a deeply unsettling mix of vibrant life and death.

Tsunade's brows snapped together. Her emerald eyes turned sharp as blades as she swept her gaze over the deformed creations. A wave of suppressed fury mixed with powerful chakra began rising around her.

She knew this sight far too well. The old Wood Release experiments that had claimed so many Senju lives had produced similar twisted results—except those had been closer to the natural green of real trees.

Here, the same invasive, destructive side of Hashirama's cells was on full display.

She whipped around, glaring straight at Orochimaru. Her voice dropped low, like thunder before a storm. "Orochimaru! You actually used living people—"

"Calm down, Tsunade."

Orochimaru had clearly expected her reaction. His face kept its usual half-smile, but his voice cut cleanly through her rising anger. "All of these were created using laboratory mice as carriers for the Hashirama cell transplantation experiments."

He deliberately emphasized the word "mice" and casually pointed toward a row of test mice still stored along the side of the lab.

Hearing "mice" instead of "humans," the terrifying pressure around Tsunade collapsed like a popped balloon. Her shoulders relaxed. The tight line of her brows didn't fully ease, but the fury in her eyes shifted into a complicated mix of disgust and heavy concern.

She hated the way this research violated the natural order of life. At the same time, she was deeply unsettled by the terrifying power contained in Hashirama's cells. Still, she understood that some level of sacrifice was unavoidable in this kind of work. The fact that they had used mice instead of people already showed how carefully Orochimaru—and the Research Division—were handling the experiments.

She glanced back at Taiichi, still standing near the door. This entire framework of rules had been something the boy had fought hard to establish when the division was first created.

Tsunade turned back to the twisted "trees," walked closer in silence, and gently touched one of the gray-white branches with a gloved finger.

The texture was cold, hard, and lifeless.

"Pure destruction and mutation…" she muttered, pulling her hand back. Her eyes were still sharp as she looked at Orochimaru. "You didn't bring us here just to show us these failures, did you?"

"Of course not." Orochimaru didn't seem bothered by her skepticism. His snake-like eyes gleamed with rational excitement. "Hashirama's cells are a double-edged sword. They contain enormous vitality, but they also carry an invasive force capable of destroying and reshaping everything. Previous experiments—including the ones Konoha attempted years ago—failed because we couldn't tame that blade."

Taiichi stood quietly to the side, his gaze calm as he studied the horrifying wooden structures. He had encountered White Zetsu samples earlier than Tsunade and had participated in some of the preliminary work, so the existence of these failures didn't surprise him. What interested him more was the turning point in Orochimaru's words.

"You said 'previous'?" Taiichi asked. "Does that mean you've made a breakthrough?"

"Follow me."

Orochimaru didn't answer directly. A proud smile curved his lips as he led them toward a separate section at the back of the lab, bathed in soft, warm light.

The air here felt noticeably cleaner, free of the rot and metallic tang from the main area.

Three specially reinforced glass enclosures sat in the center. Each one was spacious, lined with clean wood shavings, and equipped with food bowls and water dispensers. Inside were three mice with glossy fur. They were noticeably larger and more robust than ordinary lab mice, and they looked remarkably energetic. They were currently ignoring everything around them, using their front paws to hold special nutrient pellets and devour them with bright, lively black eyes.

Taiichi and Tsunade were immediately drawn in. Both were top-tier medical-nin with extremely sharp observational skills. They noticed the same extraordinary details at almost the same time:

Abnormal vitality and size. Their movements were quick and coordinated. Their muscle definition was smooth and full. There was none of the usual lethargy or agitation seen in test animals. Their bodies were strong, their fur thick and lustrous—signs of peak health.

Faint chakra fluctuations. Both could clearly sense a very weak but undeniably present flow of chakra circulating inside each of the three mice. For ordinary animals, this was a revolutionary change.

Taiichi and Tsunade exchanged a glance. Both saw undisguised shock in the other's eyes.

They checked again. There were no signs of woodification, mutation, or life-force depletion. From a physiological standpoint, these three mice were almost unnaturally healthy.

"These are the ones?" Tsunade's brows relaxed as she looked at them like they were treasures.

Orochimaru stood beside them, finally allowing a fully proud smile to show. His snake-like pupils gleamed with excitement under the warm light. "That's right. These are the latest results—mice that successfully fused with the 'weakened version' of Hashirama's cells."

He stepped closer to the enclosures like an artist presenting his masterpiece. "From the White Zetsu samples, we isolated and analyzed a stable factor that effectively neutralizes the extreme invasive nature of Hashirama's cells. After many failed attempts and optimizations, we successfully combined it with active fragments of Hashirama's cells to create this weakened cell preparation."

He pointed at the energetic mice inside the cages. "These three belong to the seventh batch. They were the first to survive and maintain stable fusion for more than three months. As you can see, they are completely healthy with no signs of mutation. Their basic physical attributes—strength, speed, endurance, and recovery—far exceed those of normal mice. Most importantly…"

He paused, his voice growing heavier with meaning. "They can now stably generate their own chakra. Although the amount is tiny, it means the weakened cells have successfully integrated into their life systems and triggered some form of evolution at the biological level."

"All three succeeded?" Taiichi caught the key point immediately. A single success could be luck. Three independent, stable cases meant something entirely different.

"Yes." Orochimaru nodded firmly. "The seventh batch had ten subjects total. All received the same improved preparation. These three are the ones that survived and achieved stable fusion. A thirty percent success rate, but it proves the technique is repeatable."

Tsunade withdrew her diagnostic chakra. Her expression had become intensely focused and serious. The earlier disgust had been replaced by sharp professional curiosity.

She looked at Orochimaru. "So when you requested access to the sealed original samples of Grandpa's cells, you wanted to test whether this method could work with the real thing?"

"Exactly. The cells inside White Zetsu have already been diluted and weakened. They're significantly different from the original cells in every way."

Orochimaru's tone turned serious, his eyes burning with hunger for knowledge and power. "The weakened version proved that fusion is possible. It gave us hope that we can actually tame that violent life force. The next step is to see if this approach can be applied to the original Hashirama cells. That's the necessary path forward."

Taiichi's gaze moved between the three lively mice and the grotesque wooden structures outside. He quickly weighed the implications, then turned to Tsunade.

"Tsunade-sensei, setting aside the grand goal of Wood Release for a moment—just looking at the effects this weakened cell treatment has shown in these mice so far—"

Tsunade took a deep breath. As a master medical-nin, she instantly saw the far more immediate and urgent value. "This can already be applied in the medical field! Especially for recovery after severe trauma!"

Her words came faster, filled with professional excitement. "These weakened cells can significantly boost the recipient's base vitality, accelerate cell division and tissue regeneration, and optimize overall physical condition. For patients recovering from crushed bones, ruptured organs, severe burns, or even limb reconstruction—if we can safely apply this technology alongside medical ninjutsu, we could cut recovery time by several times. We might even break through previous recovery limits and let heavily injured people return to full health faster and more completely. The significance of that… is enormous."

She looked at Orochimaru, eyes bright. "The data in the report you submitted earlier wasn't detailed enough about this part!"

Orochimaru smiled. While Tsunade was thinking in a completely different direction from his own goals, her reaction was exactly what he had wanted. "This part only stabilized recently. The detailed data report is still being compiled. But its potential is undeniable."

He looked at both of them and extended the invitation. "So? Two of Konoha's top medical-nin. Are you interested in this project? Would you like to get involved personally and see if we can work together to turn this double-edged sword into a true divine weapon for protecting the village? Of course, that also includes exploring the secrets of the power that once belonged to the God of Shinobi."

The lab fell into a brief silence, broken only by the soft sounds of the three mice eating.

Tsunade and Taiichi looked at each other again. This time, both saw the same resolve in the other's eyes.

"Hmph. Since you've already produced results…" Tsunade crossed her arms, chin slightly raised, slipping back into her usual haughty posture. Her eyes, however, were completely serious. "Then let me see whether this so-called 'weakened' technique can actually stand up to real medical practice. Count me in."

The corner of Taiichi's mouth lifted slightly. He nodded at Orochimaru, his tone firm. "This research is critical for Konoha's future, both medically and in terms of power. I'm joining. However—"

He shifted his tone, making his next words non-negotiable. "Any part involving human experimentation must follow the strictest safety protocols and oversight. This is to ensure our work can continue smoothly and for the long term. I trust you understand, Orochimaru-sama?"

Orochimaru's smile deepened. Excitement and anticipation flashed in his snake-like eyes. "Of course. No problem at all. Welcome aboard, Tsunade. Taiichi. Let's begin."

He spread his arms as if welcoming a successful future.

Once Tsunade found something that genuinely interested her, she cut back on both drinking and gambling. That should have been good news—except she also completely handed off her hospital duties and her teaching responsibilities at the Academy.

This left Taiichi with twice the workload.

Still, his efforts had produced clear results. Out of the most recent graduating class from the Academy, fifteen students had also studied medical ninjutsu. Follow-up checks showed that four of them had been directly assigned to intern at Konoha Hospital, while the others were serving as the medical-nin in their respective teams.

That success rate proved the teaching system Taiichi had developed was effective.

He estimated that once he finished teaching this current group and refined the remaining gaps in the curriculum, he could hand future instruction over to other medical-nin or dedicated instructors. Top-tier talents like him and Tsunade were better used elsewhere than spending large amounts of time on basic teaching—especially now that the war was over.

The current situation was simply a necessary exception during a special period.

The dismissal bell rang.

Taiichi finished today's class and watched the students still furiously copying the notes he had left on the blackboard. A satisfied smile appeared on his face.

These children were only a year or two younger than him, yet the gap between them felt like generations. It wasn't just age. It was the difference between someone who had lived through blood and fire and someone who had not.

As Taiichi gathered his teaching materials and prepared to leave, he suddenly stopped. His head turned toward the classroom door.

Three seconds later, an ANBU operative appeared in the doorway.

"Lord Taiichi, the Hokage has summoned you. He has a specific mission for you."

Taiichi's eyebrows rose. A meaningful smile spread across his face. Finally. After all this time, he was being given a proper assigned mission again.

"Got it. I'll head over right away."

He moved faster as he finished packing, then followed the ANBU operative and raced toward the Hokage Building.

A few minutes later, Taiichi arrived at the Hokage's office.

He knocked and entered. Inside were not only Minato, but also Hiruzen Sarutobi and Koharu Utatane. There was also one person Taiichi didn't recognize—but who clearly held a very high position.

"Ah, Taiichi. You're here." Minato gestured toward the stranger. "Let me introduce you. This is the client for this mission. He represents the Daimyo's mansion of the Land of Hot Water."
