Chapter 5 - Combined strength

Then I focused my will, extending a thread of ancient understanding towards the creature. The world of sound shifted subtly. The hum of the pipes became a deep, resonant song, the drip of water a rhythmic percussion as I spoke directly to the creature as if it could understand me, "Would you like to join us, I'll even give you a name. How does Rex sound." And the creature's soft whine resolved into a voice in my mind - a chorus of confused overlapping sensations.

"...bright-green-man… hurt? No… safe? Smell like deep-earth-warmth and old-sky-thunder… pain in my side…sharp-blue-scale-woman caused pain… but bright-green-man took away the anger-noise in my head… the constant screeching-light…"

It tilted its head, its rusted plates grinding softly. "Rex? Is that a sound? It is… solid. A good sound. Better than 'scrap-beast' or 'aberrant target.' Yes. I am Rex."

The creature -Rex- took a hesitant step forward, its movements still clumsy, but without malice. "The join-us? Where? The dark-tunnels are all I know. The pipes sing their deep-songs and sometimes the anger-noise returns and I must… hunt." A wave of shame and confusion emanates from it.

Serraphine watched the silent interaction with wide eyes. "Is it… communicating?" she asked, her voice hushed.

Rex's head swivelled towards her at the sound, and he let out a low growl that translated in my mind to: "She smells of sharp metal and quick-movements. She caused the bleeding."

I reached out slowly, my hands glowing with the same faint emerald light I used on my own wound I could feel my energy levels dropping. Nonetheless I knew this was the right course of action to take. Rex flinched for a moment, a low rumble echoing in his chest, but he held his ground as I placed my hands on the gash left by Serraphine's blade. The torn, techno-organic flesh knitted together under my touch, the bleeding ceasing and the raw edges sealing over, leaving only a faint, silvery scar amidst the rusted plating.

A wave of profound relief and gratitude washed over the psychic link. "The pain… it fades. The green-warmth is good. It is like the deep-song of the pipes, but… alive."

When I spoke of food and hunting together, his attention became rapt. "Hunt… not for the anger-noise? Hunt for… purpose? For pack?" The concept seemed both foreign and deeply appealing to him. He looked at Serraphine again, his head cocked. "She-defender is part of the pack? She will not make the sharp-metal bite again?"

Serraphine, seeing the interaction and the healing, slowly sheathed her stun-prod. She took a cautious step forward, her movements deliberately non-threatening.

"I will not," she said aloud as if understanding its question from its body language alone, her voice firm but calm, speaking to the creature as if it could understand her words directly. "You are under his protection now." She glanced at me, a question in her eyes. "It understands that?"

Rex let out a chuffing sound -a canine laugh. Through my 'spell', I could hear: "She-defender is clever. Her words are sharp, but her intent is… clear. Like clean water."

He took a final step forward, standing by my side. He was a bizarre and unsettling sight -a patchwork of corrupted flesh and scavenged city parts- but his posture was now one of loyalty.

"I am Rex. I will hunt with the pack. I will follow the green-warmth."

I now had an ally, though an unusual one. Serraphine looked from me to Rex and back again, a slow smile finally touching her lips. "Well then," she said, turning back towards the cavern floor below. "Let's see what other secrets this place holds with our new… friend."

I began the careful descent down the rappelling line after Serraphine, with Rex scrambling down the pipes and support structures with an unnerving, primal agility. As we moved, I focused my thoughts through the spell's link.

"Rex, what can you tell us about this place? The dark-tunnels. The pipes. Have you seen others like us? Or anything… strange?"

Rex trotted alongside me, his mismatched eyes scanning the shadows. His "voice" in my mind was a stream of sensory impressions and fragmented memories.

"The pipes… their deep-song is the oldest thing. It was here before the anger-noise. It hums in my bones. It is… good." He paused, nudging a discarded piece of conduit with his nose.

"Others… sometimes. Fleshy-things that smell of fear and oil. They do not have the green-warmth. They run. They scream. The anger-noise makes me… chase them." A wave of regret emanated from him.

He stopped suddenly, his head lifting, sniffing the air intently.

"Strange… There is a place. A crack in the great wall, behind the falling-water. The song is different there. It is… sad. It whispers of being cut. It smells like you, green-warmth-man, but also like the She-defender's sharp-metal thoughts."

Serraphine, who had reached the bottom and was scanning the area with her data pad, looked back at the two of us. "Anything?"

Before I could answer, Rex let out a low growl, his body tensing. His gaze was fixed on a cluster of larger pipes ahead, where the shadows were particularly deep.

"The anger-noise… it comes."

From the darkness, two more pairs of sickly orange eyes ignited. Two more techno organic creatures, slightly smaller than Rex but just as malformed, slinked into view. They hadn't noticed us yet; they were focused on a flickering access panel on the wall -the very data-relay Seraphine was heading for.

They began to claw and bite at the panel, their actions frantic, as if driven by a compulsion to destroy it.

The Geothermal Conduit Access point hummed with an oppressive, palpable intensity, the air thick with the acrid scent of sulphur. Flickering lights cast long, dancing shadows across the cavernous, pipe-filled sector, illuminating the crucial data-relay panel Serraphine sought. But our objective was under immediate threat. From the oppressive gloom, two malformed techno-organic canines, driven by an "anger-noise" that grated on Rex's heightened senses, lunged at the panel, their mechanical limbs tearing at its delicate surface.

Serraphine was the first to react, a chilling blast of arcane energy erupting from her fingertips. It slammed into one of the canines, encasing parts of its metallic hide in a crackling sheath of ice. The creature shrieked, its destructive frenzy momentarily slowed, but it remained on its feet, a testament to its twisted resilience. As Serraphine's magic faded, Rex, the powerful techno-organic companion, moved with surprising agility. He dashed across the uneven terrain, his heavy frame surprisingly light as he positioned himself strategically, a growl rumbling deep in his chest.

I tapped into the flux once more, began to channel the ancient energies of the wild. The air shimmered, and with a surge of primal force, two massive Dire Wolves materialized beside me, their fur bristling, eyes glowing with summoned power. They immediately surged forward, responding to my unspoken command, but their initial lunges, while fierce, missed their mark, the canines to quick or too erratic in their movements.

The techno-organic beasts were relentless. One of the canines, undeterred by the ice clinging to its frame, suddenly broke from the panel and lunged at Serraphine. Its jagged, metallic fangs tore into her side, a sharp cry escaping her lips as she stumbled back, blood blooming on her clothes. She was bruised and bloodied, but her gaze remained fixed, resolute. The second canine, meanwhile, continued its destructive work, then circled, seeking a new angle of attack.

Wounded but defiant, Serraphine retaliated with a swift, precise strike. Her weapon found a vital seam in the canine's armour, piercing deep. The creature recoiled with a metallic screech, parts of its internal mechanisms sparking violently. It was now severely weakened, barely clinging to life. Rex, seeing the opening, lunged with a snarl, his powerful jaws snapping, but the canine twisted away at the last second, his attack glancing harmlessly off its reinforced hide.

Observing the ebb and flow, I considered a wild transformation, but the tactical advantage of my summoned beasts were too great to sacrifice, and besides I doubted I had enough energy left for a transformation. Instead, I renewed my focus, urging my Dire Wolves forward. One of the massive wolves, acting on my command, closed the distance to the already crippled canine. With a guttural snarl, it tore into the beast, its powerful jaws crushing what little remained of its structural integrity. The first techno-organic canine collapsed with a final, shuddering spasm, its destructive rage extinguished. The second canine, witnessing the demise of its companion, let out a high-pitched, angry whine and repositioned itself, its glowing eyes darting between us and the vulnerable data-relay panel. But its destructive fury was short-lived. Overwhelmed by the concerted assault and the loss of its ally, the remaining techno-organic beast finally buckled, its mechanical body seizing and falling silent, its anger-noise fading into the sulphurous air.

Silence descended upon the conduit, broken only by the hum of the Flux and our own breathing. I stood completely unharmed but now drained of a lot of my energy, my face set with determination, my summoned wolves dissipating into motes of light. Rex, too, was untouched, his powerful form radiating an untamed energy, ready for the next challenge. Serraphine, however, clutched her side, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Blood stained her garments, and her movements were stiff with pain, but a grim satisfaction flickered in her eyes. The data-relay panel was safe, and the immediate threat neutralized, though the battle had left its mark.
