Chapter 128 - The Pressure Beyond The Measure

The battlefield had gone unnervingly silent.

The dust from the earlier exchanges still drifted through the air like ash from a dying fire. Three pairs of eyes—Ahan, Abhi, and Aryan—remained locked onto their respective foes. The trio had stopped gasping. Their breaths now came slow and controlled, their bodies adjusting slowly to the faint hum of energy that had—at last—begun responding to them.

Ahan's left eye tingled faintly, a dim silver ring pulsing inside his iris.

Abhi's palms felt warm, the sensation of twin lines of energy running from his shoulders to his fingertips.

Aryan felt the faint echo of something ancient ripple behind his heartbeat.

But these were only shadows of what lay ahead—incipient, incomplete, half-born.

Across from them, however, the three generals—Cairo, Hiro, and Zade—were no longer amused.

Cairo's voice cracked the stillness like a blade through cloth.

"Your bodies adapt quickly… admirable. But this is the limit of adaptation without power."

Hiro rolled his shoulders, bored, his face blank as ever. "Let's finish this. I have no patience for half-awakened children."

Zade grinned—a disturbingly wide grin that didn't belong to any sane man. "Break their bones slowly. I enjoy listening to each snap."

Ahan's jaw tightened.

Abhi's stance lowered.

Aryan's grip clenched.

The second phase began.

Cairo vanished first—no warning, no breath.

Ahan barely tilted his head to the left before a fist whistled past his cheek, the air splitting with a violent crack. Ahan retaliated instantly, stepping in with a sharp upward palm strike, but Cairo caught his wrist mid-air and twisted it with inhuman precision. Ahan spun his body to break the torque, landing a knee toward Cairo's ribs—but Cairo blocked with his elbow, countering with a downward strike aimed at Ahan's temple.

Ahan blocked using both forearms, the silver ring in his eye flaring for a heartbeat—granting him just enough perception to react in time.

Just enough. No more.

Meanwhile—

Abhi and Hiro clashed like two storms colliding.

Hiro's expression didn't change even as Abhi struck him with a rapid triple-kick combination—one to the thigh, one to the mid-torso, one toward the neck. Hiro blocked all three without shifting an inch, then answered with a palm strike so fast Abhi's ribs screamed before the pain even registered.

Abhi flew back, skidding across stone, but rolled to a recovery, blood on his lip.

"Shit… he hits like a mountain," Abhi spat, resetting his stance.

Hiro gave a single blink. "I haven't started hitting."

Aryan's exchange with Zade was nothing short of feral.

Zade lunged with a wide grin, his movements erratic yet terrifyingly precise. Aryan countered with clean, perfectly-angled strikes—military precision versus animalistic aggression—but every time Aryan's fist should have connected, Zade bent his body unnaturally, dodging with sickening flexibility.

A kick aimed at Aryan's head came in from below—an inverted sweep that defied anatomy. Aryan blocked with his shin, wincing as Zade's bone struck like iron.

"You block well," Zade hissed, leaning forward way too close. "I'll enjoy dismantling you."

"Back off," Aryan growled, slamming a head-butt into Zade's nose.

Zade only laughed as the blood dripped.

All three heroes were being pushed—harder than ever before.

The essence inside them strained, flickered, pulsed—reacting to danger.

Abhi felt something like a blade tracing the inside of his forearms.

Ahan heard whispers—a thousand overlapping murmurs of forgotten techniques.

Aryan felt a cold, ocean-deep calm settling into his bones.

But the weapons didn't manifest yet—not fully.

The essences were still testing them.

Hiro stepped forward, the air around him bending slightly, distorting like a heat haze.

"You three are functioning off instinct. That instinct will end soon."

Cairo raised a single finger. "We gave you time to breathe."

Zade cracked his neck. "Now scream for me."

They struck at once.

Three detonations burst around the generals—black flares of raw, swirling shard-energy erupting outward in violent spirals. The ground cracked. The very air shook. The temperature dropped.

Abhi shielded his face from the blast.

Ahan covered his right ear as pressure rang through it.

Aryan dug his heels into the ground to keep from being thrown back.

The smoke cleared.

And there they stood—

Cairo floating an inch above the ground, his eyes glowing obsidian, veins tracing black patterns across his skin.

Hiro was surrounded by a dense, crushing gravitational field that made the ground beneath him crater.

Zade engulfed in a dark, swirling flame—a monstrous silhouette laughing through the smoke, his teeth now unnaturally sharp.

The trio froze.

This was the full awakening of the Shards.

Cairo tilted his head. "Now… it becomes real."

Hiro's voice deepened unnaturally. "Artifacts or not—your bodies will break."

Zade giggled—a twisted, echoing giggle. "RUN. I love the chase!"

Abhi whispered toward his allies without shifting his gaze.

"Ahan, Aryan… you feel it, right?"

Ahan nodded slowly, his silver eye burning brighter.

"The artifacts are reacting. Stronger than before."

Aryan exhaled deeply. His veins glowed faint gold under the skin.

"They're not saving us yet. But… they want us to push."

Abhi smirked. "Then we push."

And for the first time—just briefly—

their artifacts pulsed in unison.

Ahan's faint eye-ring flared.

Abhi's forearm markings lit.

Aryan's heartbeat echoed with a low, ancient hum.

The generals paused.

Cairo's calm expression flickered in curiosity.

"…Ah. So the awakening begins."

Hiro narrowed his eyes.

"Do not let them sync."

Zade shrieked joyfully, "LET THEM! It's more fun to break awakened toys!"
