Chapter 52 - Chapter 52: The Situation

Chapter 52: The Situation

Northeastern Frost Country.

Amid vast stretches of forest, rows of tents spread endlessly.

Three days had passed since the great battle ended. Senju Morin led the army forward at a measured pace, and after traversing most of Frost Country, a new Konoha forward camp had been established here.

The atmosphere within the camp was no longer heavy or oppressive. Instead, it bustled with activity and vigor.

Though still within Frost Country's borders, the camp now lay very close to the frontier of the Land of Lightning. Looking into the distance, beyond the edge of the forest, one could faintly make out towering mountain ranges piercing the clouds—the unique terrain of Lightning Country, bathed in the glow of the setting sun like a magnificent painting.

To accommodate the incoming reinforcements, the scale of the frontline camp had expanded severalfold compared to before.

That very afternoon, a thousand reinforcements from the village finally arrived. They entered the camp in disciplined formation, pushing already high morale to the brink of boiling over.

Under countless watchful gazes, Advisor Nara Shikatsune and Sarutobi Hiruzen walked side by side, followed by the jōnin accompanying this reinforcement force.

They passed through the busy camp and headed toward the largest central command tent.

Inside, Senju Morin stood before a massive map, listening to a report from an intelligence shinobi.

He still wore his dark-red armor, posture upright, gaze sharp—as though he had just stepped down from the battlefield itself.

Sensing someone enter, he raised a hand slightly, signaling the report to pause, and turned his attention toward the newcomers.

"Lord Hokage."

Nara Shikatsune and Sarutobi Hiruzen bowed simultaneously. The jōnin behind them followed suit in unison.

"You've worked hard, Shikatsune, Hiruzen."

Senju Morin's voice was calm. Beneath it lay a faint trace of fatigue, but far more evident was the steady confidence of one who held the entire situation firmly in hand.

"Was the journey smooth?"

"Entirely smooth, Lord Hokage."

Nara Shikatsune stepped forward. His eyes briefly swept across the map, noting that the projected advance routes had already been marked out.

"The rear has been electrified by the news of your decisive victory over the Raikage. Morale is soaring. The first wave of reinforcements has arrived in full, and additional supplies and medical provisions will follow shortly."

Sarutobi Hiruzen continued, his tone carrying genuine admiration:

"This crushing defeat of Kumogakure will surely shake the entire shinobi world, forcing the other villages to reassess Konoha's strength."

He glanced around the tent—plain, utilitarian, utterly unremarkable—and yet, his emotions were complicated. Once upon a time, he too had stood at the center of such a space, issuing commands with authority.

Senju Morin nodded, about to begin outlining the next phase of operations—

"Kree—!"

A sharp, piercing cry of an eagle suddenly rang out over the camp.

Moments later, an ANBU shinobi entered the tent, holding in his arms a ninja hawk that looked unusually listless.

The ninja hawk was jet-black and unnaturally small, its feathers disheveled, dark-red blood foam clinging to the edge of its beak. Tied tightly to its leg was a slender bamboo tube, etched with the single rune "Confidential."

The tent fell instantly silent.

Every gaze locked onto the exhausted hawk—and the tube.

Every shinobi present understood what this meant: the messenger had forcibly stimulated the hawk with chakra, driving it to fly at extreme speed in direct defiance of its biological limits.

Something enormous had happened.

Senju Morin's expression did not change. He strode forward, personally untied the bamboo tube, and deftly unraveled the sealing formula. From within, he drew out a tightly rolled slip of paper and unfolded it at once.

The handwriting was crude and sparse—nothing but a string of meaningless numbers.

Morin reached into a nearby drawer, retrieved a small codebook, and within moments decoded the true message.

"It's Danzō."

His voice was low, but it landed like a boulder dropped into still water, sending shockwaves through every heart in the tent.

"Danzō abandoned the mission to strike Kumogakure's supply lines. Instead, he located the Eight-Tails' jinchūriki. If his operation succeeded… then by now, Kumogakure should already be drowning in a tailed beast's rampage."

"What?!"

"Releasing a tailed beast inside the village—has he lost his mind?!"

The tent erupted in uproar.

Even Nara Shikatsune—normally unshakable—felt his pupils contract sharply.

As Konoha's chief strategist, he understood better than anyone what this intelligence truly meant. This was no longer a mere tactical maneuver. Its ramifications were vast enough to overturn the entire strategic landscape.

Sarutobi Hiruzen stepped forward abruptly, disbelief and shock written across his face.

"Danzō… how could he possibly—"

Morin ignored the commotion. He turned sharply, eyes blazing as they fixed once more upon the spot marking Kumogakure on the map. His voice rose, firm and commanding:

"He is not mad. We all understand the danger of tailed beasts—and Danzō understands it better than most. This is a chance he bought for Konoha with his own life."

He paused briefly, then inhaled deeply.

"Shimura Danzō and the six jōnin who followed him are heroes of Konoha."

"Now—hear my orders!"

Every shinobi in the tent—Shikatsune and Hiruzen included—snapped to attention, their expressions sharpening instantly.

"All forces are to enter the highest state of readiness. The frontline reconnaissance and rapid-response units are to deploy immediately and maintain constant surveillance of Kumogakure's movements. The main force is to prepare at once and advance 15 km under my command."

"Shikatsune!"

"Here!" Shikatsune answered without hesitation, forcefully steadying the turbulence in his chest.

Morin met his gaze, voice grave and resolute.

"Draft a treaty proposal immediately. You will determine the specific clauses and reparations, but the core demands are non-negotiable—Kumogakure must issue a public apology, pay war reparations, and formally acknowledge Konoha's ownership of the Six Paths ninja tools."

"We cannot annihilate Kumogakure—but we will make them bleed. This time, they will disgorge everything they extorted through war."

"Understood."

A sharp glint flashed through Shikatsune's eyes as he grasped Morin's intent instantly.

Earlier, Kumogakure had attempted to coerce Konoha through war and extortion. Now, the tables had turned—it was Konoha that would wield the continuation of war as leverage.

"Hiruzen!"

"…Here."

Hiruzen's reply was hoarse. From the moment he heard Danzō's name, his emotions had been in turmoil, refusing to settle.

"You will lead all reinforcements alongside the main force and advance toward the Land of Lightning. Maintain pressure on Kumogakure—but do not cross the Frost–Lightning border for now."

"Yes, sir!"

As each order rang out, the previously calm Konoha encampment erupted into motion.

Like a colossal war engine awakening, it began to turn at full speed once more.
