Chapter 23 - The Spy

My soul core cracked and split in half.

What does this mean?

I had no clue what it meant for my soul core to split in half, but somehow the pain was gone. There didn't seem to be any effect from it splitting in half, but it clearly wasn't normal.

I was at a loss for what to do since this never happened in the game before.

"For the remainder of your time here in this class, you will only be cultivating your soul weapons, meaning, you will pour your mana into your soul core. This will need to be done once every day for at least 1 hour, or you will feel the same burning in your abdomen you did before."

Wait, since my soul core split in half, does that mean I'll have to cultivate both pieces?

It certainly felt as if I could. I could feel both pieces separately.

"We will only meet once per week for class where I will check up on your progress since not cultivating your soul core at this stage could be fatal," the professor said as he dismissed the class.

Maybe I should ask him about it?

No, my soul core cracking could have something to do with me being a demon. Asking him about it could put me at risk.

Whatever I do, I have to do it by myself. I need to do some research, maybe at the library…

As class was being dismissed, I finally got up from the mat, but since I had overexerted myself, it caused my body to be weak, causing me to stagger as I climbed to my feet.

"Woah, glasses, are you okay?"

Seeing that I nearly fell over, the person sitting next to me reached out to help. Looking up at him, I instantly recognized him. It was a handsome young man with dyed blonde hair. He wasn't muscular, but he was well-built and wore an earring in his right ear.

He was the type of guy that would usually be popular in school and had an easy-going way about him.

"Yes, I'm fine, thank you for your help." I said.

"No problem. I have a friend who also gets vertigo after sitting for too long too," he chuckled before patting me on the shoulder. "I'm Kai by the way."

"Damien, it's nice to meet you," I responded.

"Alright, well, see you later, glasses." He said before rushing off towards the exit.

I watched his back his he exited the room.

'Kai Morgan.' I mused to myself.

He's another important character in the story. He was ranked 37th in the entire first year. It was a high rank, but in the game, what made him popular was his good looks and personality. Kai was something of a playboy.

But by far, his most important role was as the close friend of Jamie Hemsworth, the protagonist's rival and rank 2 first-year student. It was a coincidence that someone in Jamie's friend close circle ended up in Levi's class.

But Jamie made the most of it. He had Kai become a spy for him by befriending Levi but this actually worked against Jamie since Levi and Kai ended up becoming good friends.

Still feeling a bit dizzy, I decided to sit back down and rest for a while before going to lunch.

After Kai left the weapon cultivation room, he made his way through the school corridors towards the cafeteria since it was now time for lunch.

The cafeteria was overcrowded with students from first, second, and third year. Every seat was packed full of students, so the ones in the lines collecting their lunches were forced to eat elsewhere. Most decided to go back to their classroom.

"I didn't expect it to be so packed. Are they serving a 5-star dish here or something?" Kai mumbled to himself sarcastically.

Luckily for Kai, his friends had arrived in the cafeteria earlier and had secured a seat for him, so after collecting his lunch, he searched for them. He saw the two people he was looking for sitting at a table on the far end of the cafeteria.

'It's just the two of them today. He must've sent the others off so we could talk.' Kai thought as he approached them with his lunch try in his hand.

Sitting at the table was a young man with black hair. This young man was tall, but he didn't have as much muscle mass as Kai or Levi. He was thinner than them.

But when it came to looks, he wasn't inferior to them in the slightest. Though his good looks could hardly be noticed over the intimidating aura that this young man exuded. Even Kai, who had known him for years, couldn't help but feel intimidated by this young man.

This young man was Jamie Hemsworth, the rank 2 first-year student. Behind him stood a beautiful girl with free-flowing black hair. She stood behind Jamie with her hand resting behind her back while he ate his lunch. Her expression was blank. She neither stared at the students in the cafeteria nor at Kai approaching them. Her sole focus was Jamie.

This girl was Isabella. She was Jamie's personal servant who had enrolled in the academy solely to protect him.

"The two of you stick out like a sore thumb," Kai chuckled and shook as he took a seat at their table.

Jamie only stared at him blankly while Isabella didn't even spare him a glance since she knew she would only get annoyed looking at his face. Seeing this, a smirk appeared on Kai's face as he winked at her to get her attention but Isabella continued to ignore him.

"So, how did it go? Did you get a chance to talk with him?" Jamie asked, looking at Kai impatiently.

The smile from Kai's face faded, and he leaned back in his seat.

"Oh, a bit. I introduced myself to him at least," Kai responded. "He always has that girl following him around, so it's hard to get close to him. I don't think she likes me."

"I see." Jamie nodded. "So what did you think of him? Is he worthy of the rank 1 title?"

"I umm…" Kai scratched the back of his head awkwardly. He was stalling. He had no clue how to respond to such a question. The wrong answer could cause Jamie to get angry.

"Just answer truthfully," Jamie said, his sharp eyes staring intently at Kai.

This caused Kai to sigh exhaustedly.

'No point in lying,' he thought.

"I remember meeting his father once, the ranked 1 hero. I remember thinking that no matter how hard I trained. No matter how crafty I was, I would never get to his level; he's just too much out of my league. I felt the same way meeting Levi Fairchild today. He's definitely worthy of his rank 1 title."

Jamie closed his eyes and leaned back in his seat before taking a deep sigh. At that moment, Kai felt his heart beating out of his chest. After a few seconds, Jamie finally opened his eyes, but only to ask another question.

"What about the girl I told you to get close to?" he asked.

Kai furrowed his brow, trying to remember which girl Jamie was talking about and soon, the image of a pale-skinned girl wearing glasses came to mind.

"Oh, that girl, the plain-looking one that wears glasses," he said with a huge grin. "What was her name again, was it Runa?"

"It's Luna."

"Ah, yes, I never got the chance to approach her. Levi, I understand, but why do you want me to get close to that girl? She isn't really much to look at. If it was Kiki, then I would understand why."

"Just do it," Jamie answered flatly.

Kai frowned at Jamie's response.

"You don't expect me to date her do you?" Kai asked dreading the thought. Of course he wouldn't refuse if that was what Jamie wanted him to do but he wouldn't be thrilled about it.

"Just do whatever it takes to get close to her."
