Chapter 69 - Chapter 69: The Things He Doesn’t Say

The morning had passed more easily than either of them had expected.

There was no awkwardness, no hesitation, no sudden need to create distance as if the night before had been a mistake, because it hadn't—and somewhere, quietly and without discussion, both of them had accepted that.

Everything felt… natural.

Too natural, maybe.

Aarav stood near the entrance, adjusting his watch as he prepared to leave for the office, his movements calm and composed as always, but if someone looked closely enough, there was something slightly more restrained in the way he carried himself today.

Not distant.

But not fully at ease either.

Anaya noticed.

Of course she did.

She had started noticing the smaller things now—the pauses, the shifts, the silences that didn't quite match the moment.

"You're leaving early today," she said, her tone casual, but her eyes quietly observant as she leaned slightly against the wall.

Aarav didn't look up immediately.

"Yeah," he replied, his voice steady. "There's a meeting."

It wasn't unusual.

Nothing about it was.

And yet—

Something about the way he said it felt… incomplete.

Anaya tilted her head slightly, watching him for a moment longer before asking, "Important one?"

Aarav nodded once, finally meeting her gaze.

"It is."

Short.

Simple.

Accurate.

And still—

Not enough.

A small silence settled between them, not uncomfortable, but not as effortless as the night before, because now there was something else present—

Something unspoken.

Anaya stepped a little closer, not too much, just enough to close the space slightly, her voice soft but direct.

"You've been thinking about it since yesterday, haven't you?"

Aarav stilled for a fraction of a second.

Barely noticeable.

But she caught it.

"It's work, Anaya," he said.

Not dismissive.

Not cold.

But… controlled.

And that was the problem.

Her expression didn't change much, but her gaze softened just slightly, not in defeat, but in understanding.

"You don't have to tell me," she said quietly.

That made him look at her again.

Really look this time.

"But you're not just thinking about work," she added, her voice still gentle, still careful, as if she wasn't trying to push, just… acknowledge.

Aarav exhaled slowly, the sound almost silent, his jaw tightening just a little before relaxing again.

For a moment, it looked like he might say something.

Like he might explain.

But then—

"I'll be fine," he said instead.

And just like that—

The moment shifted.

Not broken.

But… pulled back.

Anaya didn't argue.

Didn't push further.

Because she understood something important—

If she forced it, he would close off completely.

So instead, she nodded once, a faint, almost invisible smile touching her lips.

"Okay," she said.

But this time—

It didn't feel like enough.

Aarav noticed that too.

Of course he did.

He always noticed more than he showed.

For a second, neither of them moved.

The distance between them wasn't physical.

It was something quieter.

Something harder to name.

Then, unexpectedly, Aarav stepped closer.

Anaya blinked slightly, caught off guard by the sudden movement, her breath pausing for just a moment as he closed the space between them in a way he hadn't done before so deliberately in the middle of an ordinary morning.

His hand reached out—not hesitant, not unsure—but slower than usual, more intentional, as it lightly touched her wrist.

Not to stop her.

Not to hold her in place.

Just… to keep her there for a second longer.

"I didn't mean to…" he started, then paused, as if searching for the right words and not quite finding them.

Anaya didn't interrupt.

Didn't fill the silence.

She waited.

"I just don't want to bring it here," he finished quietly.

There it was.

Not everything.

But something.

Her gaze softened again, this time more fully, because that—

That made sense.

"Here… with me?" she asked gently.

Aarav nodded once.

Another pause.

Then Anaya stepped just a little closer, closing the space he had already shortened, her voice calm and steady.

"You're not bringing something bad here," she said. "You're just… not carrying it alone."

The words were simple.

But they landed.

Aarav's expression shifted slightly, something unreadable flickering in his eyes for a brief moment before settling again.

"I know," he said.

But this time—

It didn't sound as certain as before.

Anaya didn't push further.

Didn't try to make him say more.

Instead, she did something smaller.

Something quieter.

Her hand moved gently, resting over his for just a moment—warm, steady, grounding.

"I'll be here," she said softly.

No pressure.

No expectation.

Just… presence.

Aarav looked at their hands for a second, something in his expression tightening and softening at the same time, as if he wasn't used to this kind of reassurance being offered so freely.

Then, slowly, he nodded.

"Okay."

And this time—

It meant something more.

A few moments later, he stepped back, the space between them returning, but not in the same way as before.

Not distant.

Not disconnected.

Just… paused.

"I'll be late," he said.

Anaya nodded.

"I'll wait."

The words slipped out naturally.

Without hesitation.

Without thought.

And for the first time that morning—

Aarav's expression softened completely.

"Don't," he said quietly.

But there was no real insistence in it.

Anaya smiled faintly.

"Let me decide that."

A small pause followed.

Then—

"Okay."

And just like that—

Something settled again.

As he turned to leave, something made him stop at the door, his hand resting against the handle for a second longer than necessary.

He didn't turn fully.

But his voice came anyway.

"Anaya."

She looked up.

"I meant it," he said.

She didn't ask what.

She didn't need to.

"I know," she replied.

And then—

He left.

The door closed quietly behind him.

But the silence that followed didn't feel empty.

Because this time—

Even the things he didn't say…

Had been heard.
