Chapter 26 - A New Subspecies

Aurora and Storm rushed over to Razor's side.

A single one of Storm's scales was levitating a few meters above the stand it was resting on moment ago.

Small arcs of energy were shooting out of it at regular intervals.

Why is it doing that?!" Asked Aurora.

"This is incredible!!!" Exclaimed Razor.

"RAZOR!! What are we seeing!!" Yelled Storm.

"Ohh!! Sorry!! Got a little excited over there! It least we know how your lightning gets generated."

"Care to explain it to the rest of us then?!" Asked Storm

"The fuel that dragon use for their fire breath is a byproduct of their digestion.

It's a type of highly flammable gas that ignites when it comes in contact with the air."

Storm rolled his eyes.

We're not hatchlings anymore, Razor!! We already know these things!!"

Razor gave him a light smack on the snout with her paw.

"Don't interrupt!!"

She took a breath to continue while Storm rubbed his snout.

"Calamity's breath attack is unique though. Lightning doesn't form from gasses, so how does his body produce it?

All bodies produce a small amount of electricity from daily functions and so I believed Calamity's breath organ tapped into that somehow.

But it seems he's developed a second method of recharging his reserves. "

She gestured to the scale, that was still releasing arcs of electricity.

"My scales?" Asked Storm.

Razor nodded her head.

"Your scales are collecting the energy particles out of the air around you and seems to be storing them before slowly transfering it to the rest of your body.

Seems there is a small waiting period as your scales convert it into a type of energy your body can use but it's much faster than waiting for your energy to recharge normally.

It can also release that excess energy back into the air as I'm sure you've discovered before.

Your scales are completely different to Aurora's, all dragon scales are resistant to fire and heat, so that a close range breath attack doesn't harm the one releasing it.

Yours however, are not. Your body seems to have thrown off this ability, in order to make room for your absorption ability. "

She demonstrated this by holding one of his scales over an open fire. After a moment, it started to blacken and flake off as the heat consumed it.

Storm remembered how his body struggled the first few years after his accident.

Dragons shed their scales every 10 years in order to make room for new ones.

After his next shedding he discovered how to discharge the excess energy that was causing his body to have trouble.

He explained this to Razor, who nodded her head.

"That must have been when these new scales formed. This is further proof that your body is adapting to this change.

You're body is evolving and additional abilities will continue to grow in time. You're becoming a new subspecies of dragon."

This particular news caught both Aurora and Storm by suprise.

Although these kinds of changes occurred in elves, Dwarves, Fairies and Griffins. They never occurred in dragons before.

There was always only one species of dragons.

Until now, it seems.

"What are the drawbacks to Storm becoming a unique species?" Asked Aurora

"I truly don't know. I don't imagine any complications for you and Storm however.

Just like how different sub groups of elves can intermingle. So should you two.

He's still a dragon after all. Just a very unique one.

The question is, will his offspring have the same abilities as him?" Asked Razor.

"You mean I could pass these abilities on to my descendants!!?" Exclaimed Storm.

"I believe so, If you're evolving into a new subspecies then it's possible you could pass these genes on to future generations. " replied Razor.

This particular news troubled Storm. He had a lot of difficulties after the accident and he didn't want any potential children he might have to go through the same trouble he did.

"I had.... 'complications '... when this first happened. Will these future generations of mine have the same problems?" He asked.

To his relief, Razor shook her head.

"Doubtful. The 'complications' you had was before your body began to evolve.

And so this foreign element wasn't made for that body and that is why you were getting these problems.

Your children will already be born with the changes in place, so they won't have the same issues you had.

These problems eventually went away didn't they?" Razor asked.

Storm shook his head.

"Not completely. I still need to discharge my energy or else they appear again. " replied Storm.

"But They don't appear as frequently as they did before, do they?"

Storm thought about it and realized that she was right. In the beginning he needed to discharge daily.

Now he can last almost a whole week without ill effects.

"Could my body really be adapting to the change now?" Thought Storm.

Aurora's next question drew Storm's focus back to their discussion.

"This is all quite fascinating, but how does this help Storm in his coming battles?

Have you made any progress in discovering his capabilities yet?" She asked.

Razor nodded her head excitedly.

"Ohh, yes! Since his scales store and absorb energy, I imagine a lightning strike wouldn't harm him anymore! It would only energize him!

I'd need to run more tests though. I don't yet know what effect such a large source of energy would have on his other organs .

There's something else as well that you two haven't noticed." Said Razor.

"What is it?" Asked Storm.

"Energy' or 'magic' whatever you choose to call it. Can't be safely stored in most materials.

We've found that crystals are the best storage mediums, but your scales seem to be developing characteristics similar to crystals.

This means you can use them as backup power sources for your spells."

"Are you saying I have unlimited power reserves?!!" Asked Storm.

"No!! Of course not!! But you can store much more energy than the rest of us.

You would still need to convert the stockpiled energy but it seems like your body does so quite rapidly.

If I run out of magic, I would have to wait for my body to create a new supply, which could take hours.

But you might be able to replenish your reserves in minutes instead of hours."
