Chapter 44 - Chapter 44

The Return of Mi-An

Mi-An sat cross-legged on the wooden floor of the small, dimly lit hut.

The walls were plain, worn by time and weather. A single oil lamp flickered weakly near the entrance, casting long, wavering shadows across the wooden beams. In the corner, incense burned steadily, thin strands of smoke curling upward in delicate spirals.

Her aura pulsed gently around her.

Calm.

Measured.

Controlled.

She cultivated in silence, hands resting lightly upon her knees, breath flowing in steady cycles. Spiritual energy moved through her meridians like a quiet current beneath still water.

And then—

The air shifted.

It was subtle at first. A change in pressure. A faint distortion in the rhythm of the incense smoke.

A chill wind passed through her body, not cold against her skin—but cold within her bones.

Her hair stirred slightly.

Her eyes opened instinctively.

Before her—

A figure appeared.

Tall.

Commanding.

Yet serene.

He did not burst into existence. He did not arrive in thunder or flame. He simply stood there, as though he had always belonged in that space.

His presence radiated both warmth and authority.

Mi-An's heart skipped a beat.

"Father!" she gasped, rising abruptly to her feet.

Her voice trembled—not from fear, but from disbelief.

"Mi-An," the figure said softly.

His voice carried both concern and power, gentle yet layered with something vast beneath it.

"What are you doing?"

The simple question broke something inside her.

Tears filled her eyes almost instantly. They spilled down her cheeks as she stepped forward and dropped to her knees before him.

"Father! I'm sorry," she choked out. "I failed you. I'm not powerful enough…"

Her hands trembled as they pressed against the wooden floor. The memory of Xiao Yan's rage, the Spirit Killing Formation, the Ansha's return—it all weighed heavily on her chest.

"I couldn't stop it," she whispered. "I couldn't protect him."

"You are my daughter," he said gently.

He stepped forward and placed his hand upon her shoulder.

The warmth of it spread instantly through her body, steadying the turbulence within her cultivation base. The chaotic spiritual fluctuations around her calmed at once.

"And I will give you the power you need," he continued. "But tell me—what will you do with it?"

Mi-An lifted her head slowly.

The tears did not stop.

But something in her eyes changed.

Determination replaced helplessness.

"Xiao Yan…" she said quietly.

Her fingers curled tightly against the floorboards.

"I will protect him."

Her jaw tightened.

"And Nem…" Her voice lowered. "I'll reveal who he truly is."

For a moment, silence settled between them.

Her father studied her carefully, his gaze deep and unreadable.

"Do you think Xiao Yan will believe you?" he asked at last.

The question pierced deeper than any accusation.

Mi-An hesitated.

Images flashed through her mind—Xiao Yan's confusion, his anger, his disbelief. The way he had looked at her when she could not explain the truth.

Her chest tightened.

But she did not look away.

"I have a plan," she whispered.

The words were softer now.

Not spoken for him alone—but for herself.

A vow.

Her father's gaze softened, though the weight of destiny lingered in his expression.

The incense smoke thickened briefly, swirling around his figure as though acknowledging his presence.

Mi-An rose slowly to her feet.

The trembling in her body was gone.

In its place—

Resolve.

Whatever heaven intended.

Whatever the Ansha plotted.

Whatever Nem concealed.

She would no longer stand in silence.

And this time—

She would not fail.
