Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Back to School

The morning sun streamed through the classroom windows, casting warm light across the desks and papers scattered from the previous day. Students chatted excitedly, sharing stories about their trip to Mount Seorayeon, each adding exaggerations or funny mishaps to make their friends laugh.

Kang Daewon slipped quietly into his seat, careful not to draw too much attention. His bag was still slightly dusty from the hike, but his mind was elsewhere - on the moments he'd shared with Yoo Aera, the way her hand had brushed his, the secret paths they had discovered together.

Aera entered a moment later, her hair tied neatly, a faint smile playing on her lips. She caught his eye, and a small blush crept up her cheeks. Daewon's heart skipped.

"Hey, you two!" Minji called from the back, waving energetically. "Back from your romantic mountain adventure?"

Daewon groaned, hiding his face behind his notebook. Aera's soft laugh joined hers, teasing yet shy, and he felt a warmth spread through him.

During the first period, the teacher assigned a group project - the class would be divided into pairs. Daewon's stomach dropped when he saw the list: he was paired with Minji, and Aera with another student.

As he approached Minji to discuss the project, he caught Aera's eye across the room. She gave a subtle shrug and smile, a silent understanding passing between them. Even though they weren't partners for the project, the playful tension remained.

Throughout the day, small interactions built up the gentle heart-skipping moments: sharing notes, brushing hands while passing papers, exchanging quiet jokes. The rest of the class teased, but Daewon and Aera maintained a delicate balance - shy, aware, and entirely captivated by each other.

During lunch, Daewon's little sister, Kang Dami, popped in unexpectedly, having come to surprise him. She teased mercilessly, nudging him and whispering, "You're totally thinking about Aera unnie again, aren't you?"

Daewon flushed. "I'm not!"

Aera, walking by with her friends, caught the exchange and smiled softly, her eyes twinkling with amusement.

Even a small moment - a hand brushing a notebook, a shared laugh - made the day feel warm, alive, and full of quiet excitement.

After school, the friends gathered in their usual hangout spot, talking about the trip and showing pictures they had taken. Daewon and Aera exchanged glances, lingering a little longer than necessary. Minji nudged them playfully, but both stayed shyly quiet, content with the silent connection between them.

The day ended with promises of another small outing, maybe just a walk through the nearby park. The warmth of the trip lingered, and even as autumn deepened, the connection between Daewon and Aera continued to grow - subtle, sweet, and heart-skipping, with endless possibilities ahead.
