Chapter 26 - Castle Combe

-"You don't need to be ashamed, I'm sure many people fear death," Kael says.

 -"Thank you," Victus says uncomfortably.

-"Can you give me some advice or help?" Kael asks.

Victus looks at me, he seems nervous as he starts to fidget with his fingers.

-"Sometimes, Kael, lying is the only place where kindness can survive. If I took away the illusion from these people, what would be left of them?" Victus says. "And if I took yours... what would be left of you?"

-"So, sometimes an illusion is better than the truth?" Kael asks.

-"Only you can answer that," Victus says.

I keep looking at Victus, but he stays silent. Even though I don't get the answers I wanted, at least I have something.

-"Thank you for the help," Kael says.

So I say goodbye and start to leave; Victus says nothing as he watches me go.

 Victus's point of view

-"Are you going to show up or do you prefer to keep hiding like a little child?" says Victus while looking at his reflection in the blood of the chalice.

-"Watch your words, you could be a little more respectful," says Cain.

-"Of course, Cain." says Victus in a mocking tone. "What do you want?"

-"I need your help." says Cain. "I have something I need you to do for me."

-"Why would I help you?" says Victus. "We are not friends."

Why it's always him disturbing my peace, what does he want now? Unfortunately, we are more connected than I would like.

-"How can I help, Cain?" says Victus with a tired voice.

-"There's someone I want you to bring to my side!" says Cain with a smile.

 Kael's point of view

I doubt I can find Lilith again, so I should just continue my journey. I want to find the answers, but part of me seems to refuse to obtain them.

I continue my journey; several years have passed since I left Gabrielle and Léa behind. With the number of years that have passed, they have probably already gone, and whenever I look at the bracelet they made for me, I feel a void that I can't describe. Maybe that means that part of me, as Joan said, is real.

I arrived at a village called Castle Combe; everything here seems beautiful and calm. People walk around the town happily while children play.

I see a house from which several people exit and decide to go in. Inside, there is a man near an altar who, upon seeing me, smiles and tells me to come closer.

I sit on a nearby bench as the man approaches.

-"It's very rare to see someone with white hair like yours," says the man.

-"I was born this way, so I never thought much about it," says Kael. "Besides drawing a lot of attention, I don't believe they serve any purpose."

The man smiles as he sits next to me; he has black hair with some gray strands and seems to be around 40 years old.

-"I see you're a believer!" says the man while looking at the necklace around my neck. "I am Father Oliver."

-"I'm not, it was a gift from a friend. Why would I believe in a God who ignores the world?" says Kael. "My name is Kael."

-"God is in those who want to change what is wrong in this world!" says Father Oliver.

What a joke, if God exists, He doesn't care about this world or its people. The world would just be a project where God's smile shines only on the winners. In the end, those who idolize Him the most are the ones who suffer the most.

-"If i were to open your throat right now, Oliver... would your God reach down to catch the blood ?" Kael asks as he looks with his cold red eyes into the priest's eyes.

The priest freezes as he looks at me, for a moment I can see fear in his gaze that brings me satisfaction, but this fear is quickly overcome.

-"Then his kingdom will open to me!" says Father Oliver confidently.

The priest's attitude seems disgusting to my eyes, so I decide to leave. Those who die have no right to any kingdom, only oblivion.

When night comes and I go to read a book, I smell iron and blood in the air; as soon as I go outside, the only thing that embraces the village is darkness. I start to follow the closest scent, which leads me to a room. Upon entering through the window, I see a vampire kneeling with a child's body; the child's eyes are still open and in pain, but life has already left the body. As soon as the creature notices me, he moves to talk to me, but before he can say anything, I appear beside him and tear off his head. I look at the child's body, and to my disgust, I feel nothing.

I continued to eliminate vampires whenever I saw them, some even had time to fight back but it was useless, was I ever this weak? The scent of the last ones leads me to the same house where I found Father Oliver. Upon entering, I see Father Oliver leaning in a corner holding an injured arm; near the altar, two vampires with arms outstretched to the altar in mockery, one has dark hair and the other has yellowish-gray hair. As soon as I enter, they feel my presence and look at me.

-"Who do we have here?" says one of the vampires. "Vlad, where are the others?"

-"I do not feel their presence!" says Vlad.

They look at me with curiosity when they ask.

 - "Where are the members of our clan?" Vlad asks.

 - "Dead." Kael says.

For a moment they stop as they look at me.
